If anyone was still in the dark about this, here is the location and the actual save files that matter:

My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect/Save

and the two files you want are:

Profile (I assume where all your acheevs are stored)
Char_ (these will have dates attached to them)

All of the other save files are not needed, at least as far as I've tinkered around with ME tonight.
