The idea is that Orlais won't agree to any advancement for the elves if the elves don't riot, because otherwise they're just complacently subjugated, and riots won't do much for the elves because Orlais is so powerful that any uprising will be obliterated without mercy.

By extending the civil war, Briala wants to weaken Orlais to the point they have no choice but to negotiate with the CEs, on their terms.

Yes, but anything they gain will be outweighed by the hatred that will have developed towards them, which will create more racism towards them, however if they chose a side and made a deal in return for their support they would be able to gain some good will and respect for their service in the war, which could go a long way toward more permanent reform for their people.

Gaspard would be honour bound to live up to any agreement made, and Celene is already wanting to help the elves.

I just think any agreement made after the elves have crippled Orlais would be broken as soon as Orlais had recovered, and then the elves would end up in a worse position then they already are in.

We know that the Inquisitor is going to be trying to restore order to the world. Dragon Age is not Warhammer or Warcraft. And even if it was, that doesn't mean it's makes any sense to just give up trying to restore peace or actively makes things worse because war is all that happens.

I didn't know if we are called to restore Order. Close the veil, yes. Not sure about what else.

I think if elves are going to have a decent life, it doesn't matter what I say. I made two elf Wardens, but no one gives a **** what they did. Just like no one gives a **** about Garahel. The plight of Elves is too big of a choice to be left up to anyone except the writers. And they'd do it by railroading or in a book. In either case, I don't have to bother myself with it anymore. I'll just enjoy the games from a... shall we say.. "smaller" perspective. How my characters affect their closest friends most of all. I don't have any grand ideas about what I can do other than that.

Id help the elves in one play through and not help in the next. At least once after doing several play throughs will I try killing everyone that can be killed. >:)

I do that in most games that allows it just to see how everything ends. Then id feel so bad to end up playing again to save everyone. :)

I don't even know what the main story is. Telling from promos, it sounds like Morrigan poses a question on that in the first trailer. Do we lead the world to it's inevitable end? Or save it?

Either way, many fantasy settings revolve around perpetual conflict. Not problem solving or peace. There, the problems keep rearing their ugly heads back again. Warhammer, Warcraft, etc..

There are peace time in Warhammer where trade relations flurish amongst the different nations and races. You don't however tend to play during this time, since playing "war" is much more interresting than playing "peace". Same goes for Dragon Age.

Trying to help elves by killing humans.

Correction: Trying to help elves by making sure human keep killing one another with their own stupidity.

Same thing. Either way, she still needs to make sure as many humans die as possible so Orlais will be weak.

Winning a war creates hatred and discontent. If the elves can force Orlais to the negotiating table, it will only be because Orlais doesn't have the power to obliterate them. At that point, at least in the immediate future, an actual conflict won't be possible because Orlais can't win it. At that point, the CEs have to reach out and build political alliances to shore up their position, whether within Orlais or beyond it.

The CEs have nothing to offer, to start. Gaspard's offer to them was to create political instability so he can take advantage of the chaos. That's basically what they're doing now, only they're not relying on Gaspard's magnanimity to improve their status.

Not to mention that, if the war is drawn out, both Gaspard and Celene might die. Look how it went in the War of Roses between York and Lancaster.

I'm sure that Orlais will curbstomp the elves if they ever have the power to do it, but even if Gaspard is basically Eddard Stark when it comes to honouring his deal, he'll die eventually, and Gaspard II has no reason to be anywhere near as gentle.

And not have then strong enough to stomp over the elves and their right like they usually do. If they are dumb enough to kill themselves , that on them. The elves have no obligation to get them to stop. And if they take advantage of them due to the war, with the long history Orlais has with mistreating the elves, The Elves have every right to make sure to safe guard themselves because they clearly can't trust any human governments, especially at a time when rulership is based on might makes right.

I don't particularly like Briala, but she has something Celene and Gaspard don't; my sympathy.

How long that'll last, that'll be on her.

The point is, these stories tend to revolve around conflict. Not peace. It makes these worlds go round, in a sense.

Another I failed to mention is TES. Which repeats many of the same conflicts (the high elves are on the "oppressor" side in that series however). I don't think those will be resolved anytime soon either.

A side of me wants to see an end to the mage/templar war, for example... but then what happens if it's truly solved? There would be so many changes to the world it wouldn't be quite the same. Be careful what you wish for. It could end up like Mass Effect, when there's nothing left to delve into, after you make peace with organics and AI.

That doesn't mean those same stories can't ever end with peace.

TES will never end in peace. The High Elves literally think they need to wipe out all existence in order to revert back to their original state. There's a whole wonky metaphysical reason why they believe this, but I'll spare you ;) And you can't stop them unless you completely annihilate them.

So no peace either way. It's designed to be a huge clusterf*ck.

Doesn't Skyrim take place 200 years after Oblivion? Was there nothing but endless warfare in all that time?

She's not really helping the situation by aiding this endless cycle of violence and hate in attempts to help the elves. Helping people by killing people is not the way to go, and will just make it harder in the end to convince people to stop with the bigotry. All it will do is create a larger rift and more likely to back stab down the line.

I don't like or dislike her, I can see her reasons and I see they are the wrong way to go. I can imagine the mirror plot line will be in game, and we'll at least run into her.

If Fel hadn't kicked the bucket at the end of the book, I would be more thrilled to possibly see her because of the chance he would have been there. He was my favorite :c

The Thalmor arose in that time.. making things worse for the world. It's the whole resurgence of the Aldmeri dominion and their old ideas.. but even more dangerous actually. If they succeed, it's the end of the Elder Scroll series. Either that, or the world reverts back to some primitive state.

But anyways.. I don't want to sound like I hate peace. And I want to see elves in Dragon Age thrive, for sure. I'm just saying that these settings tend to revolve more on tension and hopelessness. For drama's sake, if anything.

The same could have been said of the Mass Effect universe, and yet along came ME3 and peace can be established due to the threat of the Reapers, and even peace with the Reapers is possible. The same could happen with the Veil Breaches. As the old saying goes "Nothing brings people together like disaster."

Yeah, but Casey Hudson has said he won't have another game after that timeline. It takes a lot of fun out of the world when you resolve big problems like that.

Reads thread...."Hey, how dare they refer to my favourite pointy eared sharp object receptacle that way!"
Honestly though, I view briala as an enemy of the inquisition at this date. We're hetero bring order, she wants to take advantage of chaos. If she smartens up upon seeing a giant green world ending hole in the sky and throws her lot in with either of the Orlesian choices, she lives happily ever after with no gaping wounds. If said option is not immediately available or requires sacrificing othe assets...... Gaping wounds HO!!(sir hammerlock here lol)

I don't want peace. I want a temporary state of "Ok, let's stop killing each other today so there will still be a world for us to kill each other over tomorrow."

After it's said and done and the fade breaches are closed, I want to lean back in a lawn chair, kick up my feet, throw back a cold one and watch all the people I hate slaughter each other.

I don't know if I can find an exact link, but it's in the "Final Hours of Mass Effect 3" documentary. There might be a transcript of some of the video from it.

I'd wager she'll have a similar role to the anvil of the void in that she'll be a tiebreaker for the gaspard celene stalemate. Both will offer the inquisition something in order to choose their side. Gaspard will probably offer a bunch of chevaliers which will be one of the best military assets you can find. Getting Briala to side with one will be the tie breaker. Probably easier to make her side with Celene but potentially more lucrative for the inquisitor if you can get her to side with gaspard.

I'd wager that if you get on briala's good side,. you'll get a sizeable bonus for your spying ring.

I find it funny that people think there's anything to do in Thedas BUT to prolong war.

People dying everywhere. That's the natural state of things in Dragon Age it seems. There's no chance of peace. Even the new game kicks off with a peace conference blowing up apparently.

What series have you been playing? There is always a chance to make things better in dragon age. It's just really, really hard. The whole point of inquisition seems to be convincing disparate groups to ally with each other. This isn't a song of ice and fire. The worst possible thing doens't always have to happen.

You seem to have a better sense of accomplishment then. I'm not sure what I've improved, even on the more optimistic playthroughs. I think my characters' affect personal lives more than political realities. Which is fine by me. I can change, say, Isabela's level of courage in a playthrough. What I can't do is actually change the plight of elves.

It doesn't matter when it takes place. Men and Mer (elves) hate each other on principle. Even their gods (which are just different aspects each other) are literally at war with one another. Going all the way back to Anu (I am) and Padomay (I am not) before time and space were created. Mundus is called the Arena because war is perpetual and only the 'winners' attain enlightenment. Don't get me started on Lorkhan/Shor who are at war with Alduin/Auri-El and who are both secretly Shezarr/Akatosh.
