I liked the female human noble the most. It really gives you a hatred for Howe and killing him is really satisfying (with the other origins it's a bit "who's this guy") plus you can become queen at the end :P

I also liked female city elf (I just think it has more oomph if you're the abducted bride) and mage.

The dwarven origins have awesome stories but I just couldn't stand playing a dwarf through the whole game. I really hated being the shortest in the group.

The dalish elf is a bit vanilla and my least favourite.

City elf has the most interesting origin story, human noble gives you the possibility of marrying into royalty, male dwarf noble you can have up to 2 children, both dwarves can end with reclaiming a huge amount of the deeproads from the darkspawn especially if you pick Baihlen as king, dwarf commoner can be named a paragon but since a paragon's house is named after the first name of said paragon and our name is completely up to us anything we hear about it in future games will be very little or non existent, and the dalish elf gets to have a history with the eluvians which plays a part in the very ending of origins and is playing an interesting part in modern day events, so... dealer's choice.

My favorite is dwarf noble. By far. I loved the political intrigue (I'm still in Lady Helmi's debt). Just a really great fantasy storyline from the origins and your exile through you forming your own house on your return.

While I'm not a fan of elves in general, I have a real soft spot for the female City Elf storyline. It's pretty brutal (rape and murder of young eleven women at a wedding), but it was powerful and different than I'm used to seeing.

My least favorite are the human noble (it just feels too 'here's the canon storyline' for my liking) and the dalish elf (which feels short, repetitive, and boring).

I'll have to agree with you. But also add that with the mage origin, you get to be a mage!

I think it depends on the criteria for what is the best.

I personally prefer my Human Noble and Dalish Elf Wardens' stories, but in terms of the content and mechanics of Origin itself I'd say the Dwarf Noble is definitely the best. I loved the feeling of being in charge of things and the Origin did a good job maintaining the illusion that you could make important decisions from your lofty position. Plus, the origin seems to let you make the most "customization" for who your Warden fromthe smallest things. You could decide what type of Noble you are. How you treated Gorim, lower commoners, other nobles and how you preferred to handle court intrigue or your public image and everything like that all depended on the dialogue choices you get over the course of the story. I'd say it definitely has the most replay value of the 6 origins.

In terms of providing the most emotionally satisfying story to continue through onto the next part of the game, I'd say the City Elf Origin.

The only origin I've yet to finish the game with is Dwarven Casteless. I will sooner or later though. They are all so good. But I absolutely love killing Howe with a human noble.

Being casteless makes it make sense to make Bhelen the king, so you should also allow Bronka to keep the anvil and ask for the dwarven specific boon. The resulting epilogue slides are awesome.

These only apply to the PS3 version (they are taken from the PS4 trophy server screen).

  • Last of your line 55.7% Hunan Noble
  • Corrupted 27.9% Dalish
  • Conscripted 21.7% Cit Elf

I like the player character to be from a different race/class each game, just in case they meet at some point ... it is less akward, and makes more sense that every race can have a hero and not only male human warrior.

For DAO, i chose my origin based on what i think makes most sense in the story, specially how Duncan recruits you. Each person likes different things, but for me the most rewarding was the dwarf casteless rogue. I liked how you are a "pure" grey warden (no noble lineage or things to get in the way), how the darkspawn feel a closer threat because you´re a dwarf, the struggle to prove your worth and eventually becoming Paragon, being brother in law to king Bhelen (one of my favourite characters), etc.

Another good origin i like is the city elf rogue, because you have a clear motivation to save Ferelden (your own family is in Denerim as you watch it burn...), and i also like how you go from zero to becoming a bann (nobleman), hopefully improving the lot of elves.

The mage origin also makes sense because the other recruits in Ostagar are not mages, and how Duncan recruits you is well done, plus you are also fereldan so you have a clear motivation to save your country.

The ones i like least are the ones which i feel the recruitment was poorly done: the human noble (he alredy got Jory, plus he never sees you in action), the dwarf noble (recruits you by sheer chance), the dalish elf (same thing). I really like how in the dwarf casteless origin Duncan goes out of his way to recruit you, risking alienating his dwarven allies because he knows you are so promising. In other origins it is like he only picked you because of random chance.

Mage of course.
DAO - Elf Mage
DA2 - Human Mage
DAI - Qunari Mage

I think nothing will hold a candle to DAO mages. If there's a time to play one, that's it. So many specs, so much utility. We'll probably never see it's like again.

I like to mix it up though. Now that DAI is coming, I'd like to do a different class for each game. Besides that, I think Rogues and Warriors keep getting improved, unlike mages.

Me too! On all those, origins and 2 I was blood mages, so I'm hoping there's blood magic in this game and would love to be a kossith blood mage.

In terms of the story, I love them all! All of them give you different motives for your character and his/her perspective. They each give that character insight on something other characters don't get insight on. (ex. A city elf will have much more knowledge on how bad city elves are treated. A dwarf noble will have a strong biased towards Bhelen. etc.)

My favorite as far as implications go is the human noble. (Second is mage :P) I love having that determination through the whole game to get vengeance. It was the first play through I did, so I might be a tad biased, but the whole play through I wanted to know about my brother. I wanted to meet Howe face to face and make him play. (*When I say 'I' I mean the character I play.) I liked that my girl came from a high class life-style where the people loved them to then face this hatred by being a Warden. It just came together so perfectly andandI'lljuststopgoingonnow.

But, for Inquisition, I'm going to have to think through which play through I want as my 'canon.' So many factors. *-* I think the Dalish elf will tie in the most to the Inquisition. And I think a Hawke who sided with the mages might also fit in 'better.'

In Origins you had to unite the disparate peoples of Ferelden to save the country and the world from the Darkspawn. It makes playing as a native Noble you know. Gave you more incentive to save your homeland and people.
In DA2 we were introduced to some of the other problems Thedas faces mainly rogue magi, abusive and overzealous religions, demons and the tension between the Chantry and the Qunari. Playing as a mage made sense for me as I learned firsthand the difficulties and prejudice magi face, but also the temptation and danger of magic.
In Inquisition we have to deal with the most powerful nation in the world tearing itself apart, a fragmented religion which was extremely influential and the possible apocalypse due to the breach in the Veil. For this game any choice for player character will make sense as this is an international crisis involving many nations and races. Only you can decide what kind of Inquisitor is best suited for this task. For me no one will expect the Qunari Inquisitor Mage!

DAO was also an international crisis. Just the beginning of it. That's kind of the point of Sten's questions if you ask about the Blight.

If anything, it seems like outsiders keep saving people's asses. Look at the Hero of Orlais (Cassandra). She's Nevarran. Or Champion of Kirkwall.. a Ferelden.

I like the mage origin although most of my playthroughs were human noble. I like playing humans although the Qunari mage can be fun in DAI ;p

My favorite two have to be female city elf and dwarf noble.  While DA:O was advertised as a dark fantasy game, I found the sequel, for all of its flaws, to be much truer to the alleged genre of the series.  The DN and CE really capture "dark fantasy" really well.

The dwarven society is very Machiavellian, and reminds me a great deal of the Drow minus the matriarchy and religious zealotry (though there is still an extreme dogma in place, it isn't religious so much as tradition).  Extreme class divide, and a ton of political machination.  Granted, this is present in Dwarf Commoner as well, but there's a rags to riches vibe in that, and you don't get to see quite as much of the upper crust end, and instead see mostly the seedy underbelly.  The schemes are still present for both, but the atmosphere is different.

The city elf, especially the female city elf origin, is incredibly dark, and really underlines the extreme oppression that the elves face.  While I found the future treatment of elves to be somewhat lacking compared to what elves allegedly face in lore, the CE origin provided more than enough to compensate.  You see what life is like as one of the wealthier members of the alienage.  There's a strong sense of community that is pretty endearing, and it helps balance out the crushing poverty and subjugation.  After all that, the player (may) violently resolve the situation, and I have to say, stabbing Vaughan was the most satisfying thing ever.  Even more than offing Howe.

So, that was long, but yeah, those are my favorite two.  Next would probably be mage and human noble.  And the bottom are the Dwarven commoner and Dalish Elf.  The Dalish Elf had too much of a Princess Mononoke vibe for me.  I love Mononoke, but I definitely saw it as a very obvious source of inspiration.  Not really sure why I couldn't get into the Dwarf Commoner origin.

Human and dwarf noble, because they are the only ones that can actually do anything worthwhile. Plus, who wouldn't want to be declared a paragon? (The dwarves deserve a sane one)

Cousland (Human noble) for me, simply for the reason that killing Howe is so much sweeter in that origin..
