At some point during the development of Dragon Age: Origins there were plans to also have human commoner and a barbarian origin stories. Obviously these didn't make the final product, but has any dev ever stated that the planned stories were for either of these origins? It would be interesting to read what they had planned.

I have heard that the human commoner was going to be a farmer from Redcliffe, but haven't read any details beyond that.

Would've been cool if the Barbarian background was an Avvar

Human commoner was going to be a farmer from redcliffe whos story was going to be similar to Luke Skywalker from Star Wars but it was scrapped as it was deemed "too boring". It was planned that there would be extra dilagoe in redcliffe village if you had this origin and an extra line or two with Allistar.

Don't ask for a source because i have no idea where it is but i'm 99.9% sure i read it from a DEV somewhere.

Found this on Mr Gaider's tumblr. Real shame about the Barbarian origin being cut, it sounds like it could have been interesting.

Thanks!

Having read that, it totally makes sense why both origins were cut. The Avvar background did sound really interesting however, and its a shame that there wasn't enough time or resources just there to complete it in a way they could be satisfied with. On that note, here is to hoping that a barbarian origin eventually makes into a future DA game. They could always recycle something similar for an Avvar or Chasind character.

I think Avvar is something they really want to touch on, but never quite get to it. But you see their desire in including their lore in secondary content (like some quests throughout DAA, or the altar in MotA... otherwise known as the toughest DA fight ever). It'll be interesting if they ever take center stage.

I'm actually a little lost when it comes to the Avvar. Need to brush up on my DA lore...

Are they meant to be still around? I got the impression they were an ancient people who disappeared/died off ages ago. Aren't the Chasind supposed to be the 'wild, barbarian' folk?

The Avvar are in the Frostbacks, still... Kell ap Morgan (in The Calling) is Avvari. (That book and the Green Ronin RPG materials both provide some good insight into the Avvar lore.)

Good to know, ta.

Also, as an aside, I'm loving some of your mods. I used a few on my last playthrough, and am delighted to see you've added some more choice ones since then.

Some Avvars show up to attack you in DAA, if you steal from the altar in the Howe Crypt.

Not sure about that altar in MotA. The Sky Cultists. They could be Avvar too, but they might just be religious Free Marchers. Plenty of barbarians spread out after Andraste brought her armies in these areas though.

It's possible that many Fereldens are Avvar genetically. Seems to be Northern Ferelden especially. Howe (Amaranthine) had all of the Avvar stuff around. And Andraste was from the ancient Denerim area, I think.

edit: My bad. Andraste was Alammari. I think Maferath was Avvar.
