Bf3 is a good game and even for complete FPS newbies a good deal of fun (the only remotely shooter'ish gaming experience I had before starting to play Bf3 was the Mass Effect series).
But some word of caution:
Battlefield is about big battles with up to 64 players. Lone wolfing is only possible if you're really, really good (or conversely, the enemy is really, really bad). For the best Battlefield experience, grab some friends for the ride, communicate and play together. It makes a SIGNIFICANT difference in how good you play and how much fun the game is.
And something else, if you just start playing the game, prepare to be farmed by experienced players. Most have migrated to Bf4, but loads are still playing Bf3 and they will abuse your newbiehood like nothing else. Fair warning.
That said, the game is free, grab it. You may not even play it and if you do you may not like it, but it's free, so why the hell not!?
