I am so curious as to what happened to Varric, Cullen,Leliana, and Cassandra in the intervening years between DA2 and DAI!

I mean we know that Leliana and Cassandra are somehow involved together working for Justina, although I am not sure why.

Varric presumably hung around Kirkwall. Did he become head of the merchants guild? Does he really  know what happened to Hawke?

And Cullen? Did he become Knight Commander, did he return to Fereldon, or did Cassandra and Leliana recruit him for some reason when they went to Kirkwall and that's how he is involved with the Inquisition?

Can those of you who have read the books and comics fill in any of the gaps?

What i know from the comics is that Varric sets out on an adventure with Alistair and Isabela, to find Maric. This happens in 9:38 Dragon, so one year after the Kirkwall incident. Not sure how they will solve this if forexample Alistair was executed in Origins etc. Canon stuff is way tricky. For the other characters i am not sure, have just started reading the books now. On The Calling atm.

DAI takes place months after DA2, not years. So they traveled from Kirkwall to where they meet the Inquisitor.

Months? For some reason I thought there was a longer interval.

100% sure it's been years since the destruction of Kirkwall 9:37 da Anders blows the chantry. Inquisition takes place after 9:40

Wasn't the destruction of Kirkwall 9:38?

Edit: Nevermind, just checked, it was indeed 9:37

I thought it takes place 3 years after DA2, didn't Asunder happen 3 years after DA2?

Cassandra interrogates Varric 3 years after the events of DA2. So i suspect DA:I will start in maybe 9:41, so 4 years after the end of DA2

According to the comic Varric, Alistair and Isabela went on an adventures after the Kirkwall Rebellion around 9:38 I think.
Sten has become the new Arishok. Alistair is king and we learned more about Isabela.
Wynne died at the White Spire, sacrificing herself to save her son's girlfriend Evageline. Shale is still around.
Leliana is still working for the Divine. Morrigan is the 'arcane advisor' to Empress Celene.
I don't know the fates of the Warden, Hawke or the other companions.
The Kirkwall Rebellion ended 9:37. Varric's interrogation happened 9:40.
Inquisition occurs a few months after the end of DA2.

Yes, but DA2 doesn't end at 9:37, it ends at 9:40 (after Cassandra's interrogation).

Touché!

I didn't think of that. If that's how we're looking at it then it's only been a few months or a year most probably.

I thought the op's post was in regards to what adventures the companions were up to within the side stories after kirkwalls Big Bang.

I always thought that the events of Inquisition start shortly after Cassandra finishes debriefing Varric. Something happens, Varric is still around so he joins.

Probably a year after that. Because Varric isn't in Kirkwall or even the Free Marches anymore at the start of Inqusiition.

The part of DA2 where we play as Hawke ends in 9:37

The part of DA2 with Varric and Cassandra is in 9:40

DAI happens 9:40-9:41

So months, not years. I believe Bioware said literally the travel time it would take Cassandra to get from Kirkwall to where Inquisition starts is the time gap.

Yeah. I guess it can get confusing, but I always count the interrogation as the end since after the interrogation ends, the credits roll. :)
