I think it is mainly that playing ME1 or ME3 lets you use a style that just doesn't really work in ME2. That was what I was finding when I started up that adept run. Especially ME3 since the combat mechanics appear similar, although they aren't. Soft cover especially was a real big issue for me. It just is not nearly as worthwhile as in the third game, IMO. Also the enemy accuracy is just a completely different ballgame, and the mercs have their own version of stunlock with the Rocket Troopers.
With Vanguard, it is very difficult to approach what can be done in ME3 even considering a no-Nova VG. Basically your charge choice needs to be correct most of the time, and if you are using the Claymore you can't hardly miss a reload cancel if there are multiple targets. But if you hit all your reload cancels with the Claymore, it is hard to beat it. I agree though that all the other shotguns still work well leveled up though.
