So we use quite a bit of data every month and my dads been talking to a guy at Telecom about, and I was just hoping to get an some peoples opinions.

Supposedly today (Monday June 2) between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM we used 2 gigs of data (up and down combined). Now, I was playing today, probably during that time too, but I only play 2 games (off host), so assuming most of that usage was me (which it would have been as no one else was really doing anything at the time) that means that each game probably used about 1 gig of data???

Does that seem right based on your experience? A whole gig for one 20-25 min gold game, off host? That seems like a s**t ton to me, but I don't know....

Edit: it was 3 games not 2 so that's 666 mb/game.

It does but the thing is no one was using at the time

Also:

My bad it was actually 3 games, 2 with the Tsol and one with the AIU, Thats still 666 mb per game.

I would be surprised if you would be using much more than 200 MB per hour

Do you have wifi? Is it encrypted? It sounded like someone was stealing your internet.

first thing you should do, is to check if  your wifi is protected with password in your router settings. if you are using password, maybe you should try to change it. or you can try a little test - disable wifi and use cable. if someone "else" is using your internet, this will stop them. if the problem is still there, it is probably in one of your PCs. maybe utorrent or something similar is set to autostart, or some software is updating-failing-updating (like my windows8.1 :D :D)... by the way, runnig some antivirus scan never hurts (you can try malwarebytes or superantispiware - both are free and good software). i hope you will fix it soon. :)

I've also noticed it can use a lot of data. Once I played for a couple hours while out and about by tethering to my phone, and later that day I got the text saying I'd burned through my 5GB of 4G. Probably just more bad netcode? I definitely hadn't been torrenting or downloading Windows updates.

Edit: I'm definitely not part of a botnet or infested with viruses. BSN plz.

From my experience ME3MP uses up something between 20 - 35 kb/s offhost...

(The actual number most likely being around ~160Kbit/s down and 40Kbit/s up -stream -> resulting in ~25KB/s total )

ME3 does not use up that much internet bandwidth.  I have gamed before while downloading stuff and it was playable though laggy.  This is on my dodgy 3 Mbps cable internet.  Can't wait for next Monday when I get my 300Mbps fibre optic line.  :)

...

666 mb/game.

Even ME3's netcode isn't *that* bad - basically the only data that's transferred is probably some setup stuff (e.g. what colours, weapons and powers everyone is using) and a stream of positional data (where everything and it's bullets are supposed to be), everything else like models, maps, etc... all the big stuff basically, runs locally.

The host will have the highest bandwidth usage as it'll be communicating with 3 clients whereas any client player will just be communicating with the host but I honestly can't imagine it using more than perhaps 10% of that figure though.

Its nowhere near that number. You might be a zombie pc or something else is doing a serious background process (eg downloading the free BF3 in origin). To check, click start/all programs/accessories/system tools/resource monitor. You will see a bunch of processes under the network tab. Use that to track down whats using your bandwidth. Its not foolproof as stuff can be hidden but its generally workable.

Also you can use the same program to check how much data you are sending and receiving. If you are really interested about it, there are more advanced (and free) tools to log and check your network usage on the fly. Just google for network monitoring tools

Thanks for the replies everyone.

What I'm getting then is that it should definitely not be using so much and the more I look at it the more ridiculous it seems, there's obviously something else going on.

When I look at our gateway stuff it says its secure, we've since changed the wifi password in any case, we'll see what happens. Thanks again.

Hopefully you're using WPA2 w/ AES and not, say, WEP, which is hilariously insecure if there's any traffic at all on the network.

It says WPA/WPA2 which is the most secure on the scale that's there, its definitely not WEP though.

We do have anti-virus software already, its not giving any warnings or anything.

I don't know how much it uses.  I don't have a data limit on the internet, although it is monitored because technically Comcast has a 250gb limit for all customers, it is just suspended in most areas (or some bs like that).

Although ME3 sends extraneous info, I would doubt it would be 2GB in a day.  Especially not for a whole 2 games.  I second the suggestion to look for malware if it was really narrowed down to a single machine on the network.

Also try to see if any applications were installing updates over the internet during that window.

Connecting to Steam for the first time in a month or so would do it :)

Most US companies don't have hard data restrictions, but they will throttle you to death if you UL/DL too much during prime hours (5-11pm)
