It is a game about man's futile struggle against his inevitable doom?

I like it.

But they should have served this with tequila.

I think I'm definitely leaving these forums and going somewhere more pleasant and civilized...I don't know, the WoW forums, a Nazis vs Communists' one...you know, somewhere more relaxing....

Oh, well, my opinion:

1) Quite agree. I'm kinda surprised the Citadel doesn't get all Reaperfied while Earth or Palaven are. And it's not like they're both on the other side of the galaxy...

2) I agree, too. It's just a case of "Deux Ex Machina" applied to the series. Which IMO is a very cheap way of solving a situation. Frankly, before ME3 was released, I honestly hoped that the solution would come from Haestrom's sun and the mystery of why it's dying. I kinda hoped the writers would had extracted more juice from that.

3) I wouldn't call it an "easy port", but...maybe the Reapers just wanted to put all their eggs in one basket, and that way being able to concentrate their efforts. And 4), with low EMS, I have no explanation either, but with high EMS, maybe they're too busy to even do that. There are a shitton of fleets after all :D

@Massive No it wasn't the same sort of stuff. So get your facts straight.

@Tsunayoshi You do realize you dig your own holes

@Kaiser Juvenile

I love how all ban together against me however my comment wasn't against the OP but everyone still debating on the ending. We all know it wasn't great and as stated by the OP that's okay. Its just a game. Considering how invested most of you are an how dedicated you all are only to attack those who are less knowledgeable about the game or overlooked something gives the fan-base and the community bad rep in my opinion.

Oh you... You make an insanely vague post that is directed and no one at all, and yet you expect us to read your mind to understand your clearly antagonistic intentions.

I think you need to remember where you are kid.

1) That was an entirely optional mission, and dark energy is hardly mentioned aside from that.

2) I'd do a little reading on Drew K.'s original dark energy idea for the ending, which made Shepard into the series' true antagonist, made the Reapers literal good guys, and demanded either a sacrifice of humanity or to send organic life towards a likely extinction. And it still involved "techno-space magic" ( his words, not mine) and a DEM-like decision.

3) ME2 left the narrative with limited options in terms of how to credibly defeat the Reapers.

Gonna go ahead and point out that the Crucible isnt a Deus Ex Machina. Its a Macguffin or Chekov's Gun trope.

It's not really a MacGuffin either, since you know its purpose and are working towards that purpose.

Closest thing the series has to a MacGuffin is the Conduit in ME1, prior to the unforeshadowed Ilos twist.

Vigil's datafile, on the other hand, fits the definition of a DEM pretty darn closely.

My first thought about the Crucible, during my first playthrough, is that it fires some kind of pulse that weakens the reaper shields.

People need a place to vent, doesn't matter if it's 2 years later. I honestly think the ME3 ending discussion will finally drop to the barest minimum once ME4 is released. Until then there's no problem at all with people who still like to discuss it.

That would've created a much more interesting scenario, in which we'd have an actual fighting chance. It almost reminds me of the final battle in Independence Day (Eagle 20 Fox 2!).

To me I thought it would've been better if since the Geth were "close" with the Reapers, it would be possible through them to severly cripple Reaper barriers, and allow us to beat them conventionally. Which would've been interesting, because it would essentially mean that Synthetics saved us from the Big Bad Synthetics, which would be a giant middle finger to the Catalyst. Even with Reaper barriers weakened, we cannot win conventionally because of how much the entire Reaper army outnumbers us. That's why I thought it would've been better if at least the Battle for Earth could be won conventionally. The entire point of that battle would be for Sword Fleet to engage the Reapers in battle and destroy them. Then Shield fleet would come in and load up the Crucible to the Citadel, and fire it off before the majority of the Reapers outside of Sol System arrive to finish Sword Fleet off. That way the player gets their conventional victory, and the "I win button" victory with the Crucible.

Thats why I mentioned Chekov's Gun as well. We know about the Crucible and its pretty much THE only real battle plan when a real fight was going to be started again. Not possible to be a DEM in that circumstance with how they beat that into the players skull.

He seems more like some little brat that needs a good 'ol southern ass whooping. With a belt no less cause he seems like the sort of brat that would purposely pick a bad switch to save his arse.

In what way did he threaten you? Take a breather dude, nobody wants to get in a heated argument with you. You just need to be a bit more polite in your posts. You gotta give respect to get it.

Woooow I was wrong you're worse than Bobvid at least he showed some kind of decorum. Tsunayoshi never threatened you he simply tried to explain the kind of person he believes you are and honestly you just proved him right.

I think we can all agree on the fundamental problem: there was not a coherent narrative to tie the trilogy together from the very beginning. It seems that they were well into development of the third game and still didn't know quite how it was going to end. For that matter, while ME2 did pretty well on its own, it didn't really do a great job as the middle part of a trilogy.

If there had been a solid narrative plan for the trilogy from the very beginning, Mass Effect would probably be the most valuable IP in the game industry.

It's nice to see that even after 2 years, we can still have a civilized discussion about the ending...

(that was sarcasm in case you missed it)

Personally, I thought it was a great ride. All major questions and conflicts were resolved (one way or another), you had great interaction with most, if not all, main characters and got to tie off a lot of the threads. Then the beam ride and everything you worked towards, all your decisions, all your relationships, invalidated in the matter of 10 minutes.

Up until that point, it was a great game and I was very happy with the way they tied everything together.

I was hoping that the crucible would be a giant, intragalactic space laser.

Alas, my dreams were crushed.

I dare say that he got himself banned for nothing with that one. Mods chucked that post out real quick.

Well this thread just took an awesome turn... I think I'll take a hands off approach and just watch the events; if it doesn't end in a ban, I imagine the mods are as amused as I am. Breakdowns are always hilarious to watch, and this guy's been building up to it for a while.

I wouldn't say the Crucible is a Chekov's Gun. It's not some random object that is shown at a specific point to be seemingly unimportant or tangential to the plot only to come back and solve the problem. We knew what the significance of the Crucible would be from a pretty early staging point.

99% with you on that one. The first and last time I was had an account on message boards was during junior high, and I gave them up ever since because I could not deal with how people act like freaking infants online. Been on these boards for like a month and I'm disappointed to have been reminded the hard way what a crap nest places like this can be for overgrown children who take their frustration on video game discussion. Like what the hell.

On topic: In my first playthrough of ME3, which a was a couple of weeks ago, I played the Citadel DLC right when my Shep was ready to do the Cerberus base mish. I haven't touched it since lol. I don't really want to go through with the endings.

I've seen enough vids to see what its about and I'm kind of alright with just leaving my Shep chillin in the DLC, perpetually with her squadmates and the arena mini game at her disposal. I'm sure many of you said something similar, but Citadel DLC feels like the real ending.

I'm on my second, and most likely my last playtrhough of ME and I'm probably jsut going to leave it at the Citadel DLC too haha. **** that star child. No thx

The Reapers would have still eaten you alive if it was.

I thought it was going to be some sort of Dark Matter weapon that used the relays to target the Reapers with a wave of Dark Energy that caused the Reapers to implode on themselves or something. I was sort of right. I was also expecting some sort of finale similar to DA:O, where you have one ending, but different variations of that ending.

Cant be a Deus Ex Machina when its known to be the way out the entire game and built up as such from the start.

I didn't say it was one either. I really would say MacGuffin works best, even if you can't really describe what kind of plot device the Crucible is.
