It would be wrong to say that you can't be feminine and a warrior at the same time. Maybe some female players want to be both. Plus, Bioware has given us different types of female MP voices before on DAO. Some are more "girly" and feminine than others. Maybe it should give more options for people who want to walk more feminine as well. I'm not saying that all female MP characters should be forced to prance around like Emily, but those who want the option to walk in a more feminine should be given it in a customization.

I think there's only going to be one default animation for female walking and running.

But the OP was more concerned about things like Shepherd not sitting with her knees together while she was wearing a dress, and things like that.  Of course you can be feminine (gorgeous, graceful, nurturing; whatever it is you think feminine means) and a warrior.  But you aren't going to necessarily be a "LAAAdy."  Especially if you're a Vashoth or an Elf or pretty much anyone who wasn't raised noble.

If you go back to page 13 of this thread, you can see the female qunari Inquisitor has a strong hip sway when she walks, and more neutral movements when she runs.  So, the compromise has kind of already been made.  I don't think they're going to give us multiple movement options this time, but those who want more feminine movements already have them, while those of us who don't can avoid seeing it by running all the time.

I run all the time, majority of the time. :)  Surprised my characters in games, haven't stopped, turned around and yell, "Let me rest! D**n you!"

But the other, much larger, part is that it deliberately plays into silly ideas about what it is to be female or feminine, how it differs from being male.

It means nothing, and the difference is between people not sexes. And whenever being a man or a woman actually starts to mean something, anything at all, it automatically becomes sexist, or worse.

I will agree to a large extent. There are certain exceptions with regards to reproductive functions, genetic predisposition to certain sex-linked diseases, and other such biological things. However, socially, I think far too much emphasis is placed on sex as a determinant of societal role and acceptable actions.

I disagree, have you seen women of shape (muscular or otherwise,) who view themselves as more than average walk? I can promise you if they are conscious of it, it isn't a neutral walk. like the poster said, if she is walking arounding in formal attire, at a social gathering she isn't trying to be neutral. No one in the history of modern man i think has ever walked neutrally if they were the center of attention or wanted to be.

You disagree with what? That the normal walk shouldn't look thuggish or that the standard walk should look neutral? Plenty of people who are dressed formally walk like a normal person, I know I do. Look at any video of Jennifer Lawrence going up on stage to accept an award, she walks like a normal person yet she's being viewed by millions. Are there women who do the duck booty walk (as Tyra Banks calls it) every day? Yes, but not the majority, and those women aren't warriors. I personally don't know any women who put on a fake "sexy" walk unless they are being silly.

You are aware that it was generally the noble houses that made up for the best warriors in many of these medieval like games right? They had the finest tutors in social interaction as well as warfare, so if indeed a female noble was allowed to participate in sword fighting and all things war related, why would she also not be learned in social etiquette, including proper posture and refined walking, these were all common signs of noble birth and proper upbringing. I'm not saying Femquisitor needs to have a pedigree but if she is going to try and persuade kings and queens, lords and ladies with more than just brute force she needs to be able to interact with them just as they interact amongst themselves. This isn't some new sexist thing, it's almost as central to the feel of the game and the time period they are mimicking as capturing the weight of heavy weapons, the proper way to hold bows and draw their strings.

My female quizzys will be qunaris or dalish. They most likely aren't nobles and don't care walking with proper posture.

I agree with Nefla on that. Me and my sisters when as kids, forcibly walked, wiggling like that sexy walk effect. huh, oh well, I admitted I did, and will stand by it. :)  It was even funnier cause I was trying to do the same they was. Otherwise none of my family does that, unless its on purpose to be funny. I really don't want to know if my sisters did it for their husbands without being funny in privacy.

do you remember how the keep in dragon age 2 walked into alienage in da2? something tells me know how to walk with grace and dignity if necessary. this is our first time even seeing a female qunari, but considering they train spies of every race that join the qun and redploy them back into various roles im betting they know of human culture enough mimic it if necessary.

While it's true people tend to alter their stance to fit more with social norms when they are aware of being watched *and* they have no more pressing matters on their mind (which is also why these video references should be taken with a pinch of salt) ... this is, if anything, an argument against animating the PC this way. Simply because situations which may call for such 'stylized walking' are relatively few, and it's going to look pretty silly and out of place everywhere else, i.e. in bulk of the game.

The qunari protagonist wasn't raised under the Qun. She (or he, for that matter) is a Vashoth who was born outside it.

My point was that my quizzys will not be nobles nor they feel need to walk like they are one. I want neutral walk for all my quizzys not feminine or masculine one so they'd walk like normal people do. Not like they are wearing high heels or not like they are body builders (although warriors could have more "bodybuilder" walk cause they have more muscles).

It's hard to sway your hips when you're wearing heavy armor, that alone should make warriors more thuggish. Muscle only gets in the way if your quads are big and your thighs end up chafing. Bloody uncomfortable.

So what? Varric can shoot 15 bolts per second without reloading.

I've seen it all now. People are now complaining about how a character walks. Some are even contemplating not playing as a female character because of walking animations.

I just.... wow.

Every time I see the name of this thread in the list all I can think is "which lady?"  There ain't no official singular "lady walk" apart from the fact that women don't swing their legs out to the side to avoid scrunching their package when they walk--a movement which was prominent in Origins cut scenes of female Wardens that involved walking.  The female Warden had a pronounced "man walk".

Female Hawke was more effeminate than MY taste but whatevs, she can be girly if she wants.  She's empowered.

How far animations have come that we can even have this conversation instead of "why does my character lumber around like a robot with a completely inflexible spine" or similar.

It was funny to see a bulky 2 meters tall qunari inquisitor move exactly like Sera with all the hip swaying Femhawke was derided for. Guess we´re all just dandy with it now.

Not sure about the purpose of this thread, you can clearly see in the gameplay footage that she walks in a stereotypical "fashion model" way.

You have your eye candy folks. Relax.

Female gait cycle is heavily influenced by the distance of separation between the hips. The larger the separation the larger the hip sway due to more rotation being needed for the movement of the leg.

As the affected ilium rotates anteromedially along the vertical plane, the unaffected hip needs to stabilize the opposite side muscles and prevent hip movement of that side, which causes the affected side ilium to rise. And then reverse in order for the gait cycle to continue.

If you have small hips you can teach yourself to walk with an exaggerated s-curve of the hips. But doing that can lead to lower lumbosacral issues and/or posible sacral issues depending on the weight of the individual.

I greatly disliked FemHawke's walk/run, and have disdain for all kind of "sexy" walkin' for women in video games. Was really pleased with FemShep's. I haven't seen the footage for Inquisition yet, but I really hope for a normal woman's gait. None of this "elbows in, closed knees, sashaying" business.

After seventeen pages, I still have no idea what walking, talking and acting like a lady even means. I'm pretty sure I don't do it, though.

(I apparently walk exactly like my father and brother - we've been known to send relatives walking behind the three of us into fits of giggles. And I do know they don't sway their hips.)

How about if the character always ran backwards or sideways? About the same level of annoyance for some.

I want my femquisitor to walk like she's about to break someone's legs, not having a hair salon appointment.

My Inquisitor don't walk just sit on throne and give orders, I just need to get some Orlesian pillows so throne would be comfy.
