As far as dreams and nightmares go:  SHepard had enough material to use without shoehorning in the kid as some universal symbol.

I mean, all Shepards have:

The Prothean beacon vision (which Shepard admits in ME1 to causing strange dreams/nightmares)

The experience of being spaced, "dying" and coming back via the Lazarus Project

The Collector Base, including seeing at least one person getting smoothied

And this is without the optional stuff, like Elysium/Akuze/Torfan, seeing a companion die, Bahak, etc.  Shep's got plenty of skulls on his/her shelf already.  No need to add more.  Just work with what's already there.

I didn't like the ME1 team because I felt they were rehashes of characters BW had done before, and ME1 as a whole felt like KOTOR with the serial numbers filed off. They were also more thinly characterized. For ME2, a combination of LMs and sheer variety meant I connected to about four of them.

Man, Shepard's survival really matters to some people. The dude is so bland, I'm not even sure why you would even want him to live. I did him a favour by having him become an AI God.

I never thought Shepard was bland. But then, this is coming from someone who also really liked the Warden, and that character is practically a plank if you don't put enough effort into your imagination.
