It mentions the mother is still alive I think? Is there any mention of her again in any of the books or in dragon age 2?

Here's the story that Ashalle tells the DE about his/her parents: http://youtu.be/bcNQtgo5A0U?t=36m3s
The mother either committed suicide or disappeared forever. It's possible she's still alive, but I'm pretty sure she's dead.

She just wanders off. Maybe she's a hermit.

She meets up with Dad Brosca, who lit out for the surface, and then they live a quiet life in the country raising rather odd-looking children. Then they rescue an enormous dying man who, when he recovers, accuses them all of stealing his sword-soul and kills them.
/no, it's not canon

Hope none of you romanced him as a Dalish.

Ashalle will tell you, if you manage to persuade her, that your mother just wanders off one night. She could still be alive, but it's never brought up again. Basically she hung around long enough for the DE to be born and left due to a broken heart, but it's possible other stuff was happening within the clan that convinced her to leave. The DE's dad was the clan's Keeper, after all, and the elders of the clan had said they wouldn't bless his union with the woman who'd be the DE's mother. The pair were essentially found and attacked by those brigands because they defied the elders by meeting in secret away from the security of the clan. That's not canon though, just me speculating
I connected similar points with their story as well. Although the whole "meeting in secret" thing is great. I didn't think of that.

Oh, they were 100% meeting in secret, that's not made up.
I realise I wasn't clear on this bit: the speculation part was that the mother might not have left purely of a broken heart, but due to clan politics. She'd effectively gone against the wishes of the hahren by having a relationship with the Keeper, and he was now dead as an indirect result of that.

I gathered that much from Ashalle. That it wasn't an approved relationship for some reason.
I must've missed the meeting in secret bit. Hmm.

Hmm... I don't have the game or toolkit installed on this machine, but now that you mention it I don't remember if Ashalle explicitly says they were meeting in secret. I always figured they must have been if they'd asked for approval and been denied, and the dad theoretically had to worry about his reputation as Keeper. It's always possible the clan knew they were seeing each other, even if they weren't flaunting it.

In any case, it's a good touch. What seems like a fun romantic moment.. gets ruined by some random bandits.
