Or 82% of people (whenever the statistics were done) played a male because that is what was marketed.

What's the mechanism there? Choosing a male or female PC is literally the first choice you face. You can't skip over it. How would the advertising control the player's choice?

I know (hope) you jest, but you do realise that saying things like that are part of the problem of defining female characters by their sexuality rather than who they are and what they can do (*cough* femshep beauty contest *cough*).

You mean the exact way of men being portrayed in games? Unrealistically buffed up super models with tons of self confidence?

The least they can do is make the woman good looking. Enough with women wanting us to appreciate non-beauty more due to low self confidence. Beauty is beauty and We wants it.

In all seriousness, they could start with concept art instead of a video that features both PCs, the way BW did with Inquisition (edit: yeah a video with the dude came first, I know). Hell, the female Inquisitor concept art is so damn badass I'm considering rolling that first.

Yeah but you see, that's not a problem. That's only fair.

And I dont want to see them cater to the feminist crowd. It's dumb. They already have the option to play as a female. Good enough. That's all they need.

Starting the advertising with fem character for the sake of it is stupid. Just like poorly done same sex romances

Ah, so you're against equality for women eh? That's great. That's really all feminism means anyway, not this ridiculous brand of misandry that people seem to love to hold on to.

Blame the feminists for that.

Aw come on. You can't lump all versions of a movement together like that. Are there some crazy versions of feminism? Sure. That goes for anything, though.

Not saying I do that, not saying it's right, only explaining why people see feminism as a misandric abomination: feminists.

Just like men, ridiculous backwards men who beat their women are responsible for a portion of those feminists seeing males as the root of all evil.

I'm gonna go ahead and blame those "men's rights" jokers instead.

Oh yeah, cause men just have to be men and treated as such, but god forbid a woman being a woman and treated as such.

Just so it's said, the reboot Lara Croft is the loveliest, most realistic female game character ever. She's fantastic! A believable progression from scared student to Valkyrie of Fury! And she's pretty easy on the eyes as well.

Not to say that I disagree with you. A lot of what you said is true and I think the new Lara Croft is markedly better than in any of her previous incarnations.

But to call her progress believable is stretching it a little. I feel that this guy explains it better than I ever could.

Though this isn't really the place for that debate, the whole "men's rights" concept is far more problematic than you think. I mean, just check out their forums. Never will you find a more wretched hive of scum and misogyny.

For a video game that is, yes it's not 'realistic' in the real world sense. It's just that her VA did such a great job of showing someone vulnerable yet determined. She finds her strength along the way and eventually starts to revel in it. I just really liked the game, and I HATED the original bubble-breasted Lara. Can't wait for the sequel.

I'll have to check those Errant Signal videos out, they look good.

I don't travel to such forums. The only forum full of idiots I've ever visited was theflatearthsociety.org

And I suggest anyone who's up for a laugh to go there at least once in their life, but leave quickly. Don't engage them, your laughter will quickly turn nto frustration.

Yeah I've been there. It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so tragic.

Well, the argument here is that when games idealize men, they're providing a vehicle by which male players can project an idealized version of themselves into the game. Players want to play as badasses, not as 90 pound wimps. By contrast, it's hard to make the argument that the highly sexualized versions of women we see in most games are designed that way as vehicles for women to project idealized themselves into the game; while I haven't done any investigation of the matter, I'm not sure if it's a particularly common fantasy for women to think, "Wow, I always wanted to play as a skantily clad, unrealistically buxom girl with a gun/sword!"

In other words, idealized images of both men and women in games are created largely for the sake of men. This is presumably why you don't see a cleverly placed "Investigate" option right next to Jacob's derriere, or see armors like this in most fantasy games:
