No horror element? I think it's the opposite, actually. It's nothing but horror because you have to move around slower and observe your environment more. I was chilled to the bone scared to walk through fields deciding how I would approach some situations. You have to be willing to sacrifice certain items just to get light. Do you hold a weapon or a light source? The only thing I can say that I remember being really bad in DayZ was the NVG goggles. That was absurd because people would camp the night servers with them and just snipe everyone. The thing about DayZ's night is they weren't all pitch black. They were more realistic than some gave credit to. It all depended on the moon and what kind of weather was in the server. I actually was able to navigate using the stars in one server. Now that's an experience in itself. Some servers were had brighter settings at night where you could see better. I don't think people give enough credit where it's due for such a unique experience, IMO.

Are you talking about Dragon's Dogma? I disagree there too. Can't tell you how many times I ran into some random giant Ogre who absolutely crushed me because I couldn't see him coming.

I'm talking about Dragon's Dogma. I don't play zombie games. Ogre's aren't a threat to me. They're just walking piles of 9000 XP. Meeting one is a great moment, because I get more stuff to craft. Or a chimera. Or whatever. Enemies there just aren't a threat to my character - they exist to get murdered.

when you get to a decent level, yes they pose no threat, but with dogmas healing system being crap (unless you carry items), its somewhat difficult in early levels

They don't have an mmo budget for one thing, and for another the day/night cycle doesn't add as much atmosphere as a specifically crafted environment does.

You don't need an mmo budget and Day/night cycles are not that expensive to do at ALL, it's a basic feature for most engines to do.

Also doesn't add as much atmosphere? I am saying that they can do both, they can have a dynamic day/night cycle and also still keep a "set" time of day for specific areas in the game, this is something that mmo's have done already to set the mood they want for the storyline/area you are in.

However the big open world? A dynamic day/night cycle will offer MORE Moody/atmosphere then an always bright day/dark night that never changes.

Not to mention it also helps when traveling back and fourth, to give new life to the same areas because at night things can look different and the tone of the game can change.

In some cases bigger nasties come out out at night, in others, you just randomly walk into them without being able to prepare which ups the difficulty considerably. It's a defining moment in Dragons Dogma when you can travel at all hours without fear, it means your a bass ass and it feels good.
