Learning to be a good soloer is a tough learning curve but most importantly, a tough journey filled with many many ups and downs. Those without a heart for it won't stick around for the journey. The challenge of soloing is obviously not your cup of tea and the same could be said for most of BSN. That's why you can't genuinely enjoy it. IMHO it kinda has to mean something.

Take knocking, invaderone, alqiunn, hardcoresalmon, stentron, Nightslasher, d_nought etc...  who are top tier soloers with fast times and/or very difficult enemy/map/kit combo extractions. I'm pretty sure they've experienced countless failed attempts. I believed they had a passion for soloing which is why they continued despite the fails hence all the solo videos/pics they produced.

Passion is what makes the difference. Anyone can step up to the plate and take a swing, miss then walk away but passion(having a heart) is what will keep you swinging until you hit the ball right. My advice would be to not force yourself to have fun with or a heart for something that  doesn't resonate with you. If team games is where you true enjoyment of the game is then stick with that....

Anyways hope this helps....

Great advice, Cain!

Passion - is - one of the most important aspects of becoming a good solo'er. But I stick by what I said about playing to your strengths, as well. If you're getting your butt killed each time you try to speedrun a Plat solo, then you're probably not quite fit for that, yet. I'm the perfect example of this. When I try to go fast, I lose my situational awareness, and that gets me flanked and killed. Two months ago, rushing the objective cost me what could have been a Flawless Plat solo with the Asari Huntress; mind you, I was going pretty fast, too. But impatience cost me this particular solo via a quick Banshee insta-kill.

I know you once told me our playstyles are similar, in the way that they are defensive-minded. If surviving is what you're good at, play to that quality. Don't force yourself. What gets me going, is I'll tell myself I'm going to frustrate the enemies, because I'm so hard to kill. And when I do stay in this frame of mind, I - am - difficult to kill. From there on, it's just a matter of not making any silly mistakes and staying composed.

If you're not liking solos you can add me if you want to duo sometime, or trio with Tchockiee and I, we're usually dealing with randoms all the time.

I've never failed during a solo, I always rage-quit if it doesn't look good. :D

I've done 5 successful gold solos to date and I rage-quited during 2 attempts, so my rage-quit-value is around 28 per cent.

I had two disconnections during plat solo attempts back in the day when my internet was really bad - it pissed off so much I stopped soloing for almost a year. I only tried once since and succeeded. I don't think I'm really qualified to give advice.

Soloing Plat is like Nascar.. round and round we go. Except when soloing, you can make right hand turns if you want.

Btw Cain.. that was cute. You got all heartfelt and stuff..

Its not unusual for me to fail... though I get discouraged it drives me to try again and again...Its consumes me at times I'm afraid:/
As far as enjoyment goes anything with the vemon, javelin or arc pistol involved is a thrill:) Never give up.

My drill 3 rounds went from 100 to 40 while working on solos. It yielded about 4 mission success, and 2 that I feel I did ok. 99% of them were rage quit.

It certainly made me playing better. And goon rush on Cerberus wave 4, 6 and 7 are so much fun.

I normally only attempt solos once or twice because I know I'll just get frustrated if I grind it especially if they are long solos. Not sure what my fail rate is but it's almost always wave 10 devices or targets.

Failure is always a possibility you've just got to know the difference between when it was your fault you failed and when it was just a bad objective. If it's because of bad objectives then it's not your fault and you shouldn't take it hard. Just try to minimize your own mistakes and don't get frustrated about things outside of your control.

I don't quit solos, I keep playing through all the BS the game throws at me until I've crushed the controller into dust and failed the mission properly.

I have to to have an objective in mind to be able to do it right. A particular kit/loadout I've never done or time I realistically want to beat. I've sub 20'd gold and sub 40'd plat so I no longer care about times. The one solo left that I really want is a 10 WS Kroldier with claymore but apparently shotgun amps are now UR's.

So much depends on the map. I think that is even more important than level, especially if you get bad objectives. A Platinum Giant game is probably easier regardless of what objectives you get than a Jade Gold with a bad devices objective.

Easy maps are Giant, White, Ghost, Rio, Vancouver, Glacier.

Also CM4's make it so much easier to survive with moderately tanky kits that they change the odds around a lot.

It would be pretty rare for me to fail a gold solo but still happens.

Platinum would be much worse, I've only done 11 of those out of probably around 40 attempts. On all successes I always set the map to one listed above and gone all out with weapons and consumables as well. And there are plenty of kits I wouldn't want to use.

Don't know if it lolSilver counts but, since I really need my consumables to earn faster credits in team gold+  games, I've started to warm-up or test out in silver solos sans amps, etc. and die-out if I get taken down.  No sweat, nothing to lose, and good practice, I guess?!

My first banner was the Lone Wolf but it took me pretty much a full day to get it with countless fails due to impatience, a few BS synch kills and difficult objectives . I never really bothered with solos much after that because I didnt want to go through the frustration.

The Gold solos I have done since then have come about when I have tried a new build and realised around wave 9 that I had enough consumables to finish the game as a solo.

A couple have also come about because I started the match Public and no one joined .

Tried a Plat solo once and had a bad run with wave 6 devices and failed and have never tried that again.

I  have a similar view to the OP in that I dont really find solos much fun. I just don't have the time or the patience .

I prefer team games but if I'm bored or feel like a challenge I'll try a solo.  I prefer gold solos because platinum takes too long.  And I will only try a solo a handful of times, I'm not one of those people who does a single solo over a period of several days.

My advice - don't try a solo more than 5 or so times.  Nobody ultimately really cares about how MLG at mass effect you are, so don't stress over it.

I took my Fury to the Thunderdome again, but I rage quit on wave 3 because the brute and ravager got stuck on each other right next to the device.

My natural instincts told me to missile, like I do in team games. but I can't do that in a solo. so I ended up kiting, only to have a ravager camp the device. I didn't have time to kill it so I went and attempted to disable the device only to have it kill me. so I quit.

It wasn't even something I did to enjoy, it was something I HAD to do to improve.

Shows how much I've improved right? :/

...my failed Blackwatch attempt was the final straw. It was just so disheartening. I ****ed up, I was impatient and I screwed myself over on wave 10.

Hello! Thought I'd take a break from Diablo 3 and chime in with a slightly different perspective to most people here.

I'm qualified to comment; I've done solos. Gold/Giant/geth. With a krolord or kroguard. What?

Yeah, I mostly play(ed) silver, with some gold. To put some perspective on things: you're by far the best player I've played regularly with, and one of the best I've seen. You say that you f'ed up on wave 10; well, I'd count myself lucky to make it to wave 3. You were hoping to get 10 waves survived; that's a few hundred miles beyond the horizon for me. In the rarefied atmosphere of the forum, it's easy to forget the external context.

Nobody doubts that you can hold your own against anyone else on this board. Hell, I'd go further than that, and say that you're better than most people here, because of your knack for making offbeat builds work. You don't need tactical smart missiles, sonic electronic ball breakers, or nukes to blow things up; you can make do with sharp sticks. You shouldn't feel that you have to prove yourself or that you're under pressure of any kind.

Your drive for self-improvement is admirable, but soloing is only a subset of the full MP experience. It helps for things like situational awareness and spawn management, but honestly, you're already doing pretty well on those counts anyway. Maybe for someone like me, learning to do solos would lead to a quantum improvement in skill; but for you, I suspect the improvement would be marginal at best. In fact, it may even make you worse in some respects, because you'll start to assume the mobs always behave in nice, predictable ways. But when playing in pugs -- or with idiots like me -- that can't be relied on. The ability to improvise, to adapt, to rescue a situation that's FUBARed (or a teammate about to get synced, NOT THAT IT EVER HAPPENED TO ME) -- that's important too.

You also shouldn't forget that ME3 MP was never designed to be soloable, which means that it's a more frustrating experience than it should be. Some factors are just beyond your control, like getting bad objectives or sync kills leading to mission failure. Failing a mission because of these doesn't mean your skill level is lacking (well, maybe if you get synced regularly, NOT THAT IT EVER HAPPENS TO ME), it just means you had bad luck.

So, why should you solo? Because you find the challenge, and the frustration, to be enjoyable. If you're not finding it enjoyable, you shouldn't hesitate to walk away. It's only a game, and if you're not enjoying yourself, then the game is no longer serving its purpose.

I've actually just realized something, I almost forgot about what I stand for. I let negative thoughts about soloing cloud my mind when something far more important and meaningful to me is already within my grasp.

Don't go all metaphysical on me now.

Thank you all for your wonderful and supportive posts, I really appreciate them all! <3

I especially thank Cain and Hong for their magnificent and heartfelt posts regarding their perspectives. ^_^

I admit, I was being selfish with my 10 WS ambition. I lost my patience after using the Medigel which resulted in sacrificing another medigel to nuke and get the wave over with. I again rushed into wave 10 without thinking.

My own selfishness was my downfall. lol

I'm more suited to be a "Savior" of sorts rather than being a "Lone Wolf". :P

I've decided that I will only attempt a Platinum solo once per challenge, if I don't succeed then who cares. :P

I will have fun with Gold solos though, I just have to go and do it. Not stressing about time, just try to survive the best I can, like in my Talon Merc Bow build "solos" vs each faction. :)
