I never understood that. If the nobles are siding with Gaspard, that pretty much sounds like her goose is cooked. Val Royeaux is all nice and symbolic, but how could it matter in the face of increasing political isolation?

As the capital I assume it has a great stronghold. Probably the best in the nation. Try conquering that!

Plus the weaker willed nobles look to Val Royeux for guidance, whoever is there is able to sway them through simply appearing to be in control, illusions of normalcy and all that. Not all nobles have the will of Celene and Gaspard, most are floozies who are all to happy to be led like sheep. Also Val Royaux as capital has access to more wealth than other cities, and the Chantry's headquarters are there. It isn't an end-all-be-all, but it is an asset, that allows Celene not to fall in one go against a numerically superior Gaspard.

Also when Celene reaches Val Royeax those nobles who sided with Gaspard are thinking 'He couldn't even manage to kill her when he had the drop on her, now she's back in the capital'. So some of those who would have sided with Gaspard will become hesitant and try and remain neutral, weaking Gaspard.

To those of you who have read Masked Empire!

-----------

With Celene's Champion, Ser Michel, forfeiting the duel for Orlais with Gaspard De Chalons (through Briala's favor), Gaspard was named the new Emperor of Orlais. Celene was banished from Orlais and transported though the Eluvian safely to her Winter Palace in Halamshiral. Is this why we have been shown Images of The Winter Palace? Is this her only residence now? I'm guessing that's where you infiltrate the party that is being held.

I think it'll be interesting to see how Orlais has been run with Gaspard as it's Emperor. With Celene I, Orlais went through a cultural Renaissance, art, philosophy, education etc. I have a feeling Gaspard will achieve the direct opposite of what Celene has done.

Thoughts? :D

I've always wanted to dethrone an usurping Emperor.

I don't think Gaspard had the majority of the nobles support, he just had more then was expected. Remember Celene had strong supporters if she could get to them. If Gaspard had the majority of the nobles in his pocket already, he could have just gone to Val Royeux and taken the throne, he needed Celene dead in order to get support for his claim.

When we meet him I want the Rains of Castamere to play in the background. The Qun demands it.

He didn't have a majority, but he had more than Celene. A large part of the nobles would take the Lannister route and wait until the end to take sides, when they could guarentee the winning side.

Actually it is mentioned he could have gone to Val Royaux and won, but he refuses to because declaring Celene dead when she isn't would be dishonorable, so he waits and tries to ensure Celene's death first.

Where does it say that Celene is back in Val Royeaux?   I thought that at the end of both Masked Empire and Asunder she was still stuck in Halamshiral awaiting back up.  At the end of Asunder, an important general loyal to her is leaving the capital in order to go to her support.   That was the whole point why Briala put them where she did, because neither was in a position to take over the capital city, which of course is an important power base.   As it is it would appear that Gaspard probably holds much of the north up to but not including Val Royeaux, whilst Celene holds the southern Dalelands and the area in between is the focus for conflict.   There was also something on the main site about both sides having called a temporary truce in the light of the constant incursions of undead soldiers, where some other party is apparently using the dead soldiers they both produced with their war to provide them with their own army.

At least two of the areas we visit may be nominally under control of one or other of them.   As I say, the Dales predominantly come under Celene, whereas the northern highlands beyond Val Chevin are likely ceded to Gaspard.   Part of the reason that the Inquisitor has to deal with any problems there is that neither of the would be rulers of Orlais wishes to risk weakening themselves or opening themselves up to attack from the other side by doing it with their own resources.      It may be that we will have a hand in determining who eventually rules Orlais.   It is possible that ending the conflict is necessary to minimise deaths and thus aid in closing the Veil Tear.   If not, then I hope we also do have the option of leaving matters exactly as they are since I don't particularly like either candidate.

They're both vile, but I'd pick Celene over Gaspard as he's a warmonger and a racist.

Before anyone corrects me, I've just read the official site and see that I've got it round the wrong way.   Celene did make it back to Val Royeaux but apparently Gaspard still holds the south.  Oh well, Celene is obviously far more ingenious than Briala gave her credit for.    Anyway, I suppose it will be fun visiting the Winter Palace and participating in an Orlesian ball, particularly with Morrigan on hand with her sarcastic remarks.    Still hope I can remain neutral though.   If not, then I shall play the Game so well that may be the nobles will ditch them both in favour of the Inquisitor!   I'm joking of course.   I can't abide the Game.   I would like to make getting rid of it a condition of my support.
