I play an online game called Higher Ground. When I connect to the server I connect right from Nwmain.exe and not nwn.exe first.

 

I tried them both and when I connect to the server Im good for about 20 minutes, and then my keyboard locks up. I can see everyone walking around, but Im helples to do anything. The only way is to close it down hard, which is not easy on your computer. If it happened anywhere else, I know it would probably be my computer. My computer is clean of any virus, as I use pc malware and panda security. Perhaps it is my computer, but the instances are rather isolated. Is there a possible reason, that is quite common?

In order to help you out can you answer some questions please?

Does your screen alter in anyway?
Eg- black borders? Anything reminiscent of cutscene mode in nwn?

Does this happen on other servers?
Feel free to log into mine for 30 minutes if you want to test : asmodei.net:5222 is the direct connect.

If it only happens on higher ground it might be script induced?
I know there is a script command called SetCommandable - I don't think I have ever used it, but I think it essentially blocks the user from giving commands to their avatar?

Does your mouse still move?
Can you click to move!

Try alt + f10 (I think that's the shortcut to make nwn run in a window)
If it locks up while in window mode- you might be able to determine if a windows popup is appearing that is breaking it?

If it is a script issue, only a higher ground admin/builder/scripted could comment on possible causes and solutions.

Do you run nwn with all cores on your processor? The game is not fully supportive of multi core processors- you might want to try setting the affinity of the nwmain.exe to run on a single core- and see what effect if any it has?

Try a few of these and report back to see if it made any difference.
At the very least we can try to narrow it down.

The screen does not border or anything. (its the keyboard, the program and the screen, just freeze up. I can see and hear everything, but I cant move. None of the keys work example . CNTR-ALT-DELETE and neither does the mouse (last night while playing the game, a player right close to me. Their mouse froze up, and then I froze up.

That scripting issue sounds appealing I'll ask if the administrator has experienced anything like it.

 

If it is a script issue, only a Higher Ground scripter/builder/adm.  could comment on it.

I was just frustrated is all, I might check out the Higher Ground administrator. Before I go around accusing anyone, I want to cover all my bases. It could very well be my computer.

Not sure if setcommandable actually causes what I thought it causes.

Are you sure you have all the higher ground content ?

I do not think it is Alt-F10.

Alt-Enter is used in nwn to exit windows mode. but it has to be set up in the nwn.ini first.

Thx guys...I think I found my problem. I've recently upgraded my virus protection to include malware protection as well. Because yesterday and the day before, I received a notice that something was trying to access the internet from the nwmain.exe program. The first time I thought nothing of it. The second time gave me cause for concern. I think it was a hacker because I said no this time, and went and played HG. Without (sp)incident(sp).

I had a technitian(sp) look at my computer, and he noticed an error as soon as I went to update it. Because I uninstalled and installed Neverwinter Nights.

For Neverwinter the original game I went to update it from the program itself, and it wouldn't allow me to. I installed Shadows of Undrentide it still wouldn't  allow me too.

automatic updates no longer works, you must download patch 1.69 manually

Now do I patch the original nwn first, then install sou and patch it, then finally hotu and patch it. Or is there a one size fits all?

 

And secondly since this is an older game it generally needs to be run in compatible mode. Do I go to properties in the CD-ROM disc itself or do I do that with the programs nwn.exe and  nwmain.exe after the game is installed?

 

Or do I it just with nwmain.exe since it is the only one that I use when connecting to higherground?

 

Or should I use both?

From experience, I have never had to worry about compatibility mode (on windows 7 64bit)
If you were to apply it, then it would be to nwmain.exe

In terms of patching - You install the expansions (sou, and hotu and anything else) and then patch.
There should be a 1.69 patch specifically for the expansion installed version.

One more recommendation I would make is that you can get improved game play by setting your processor affinity for the game to be 1 core.

The game was never built for multi-core systems, running on multi-core systems can cause performance issues.
Using the nwnplayer.ini or task manager to set the processor affinity to be 1 should improve gameplay.

If you run it in Windows 98 compatability mode, it will use just one core.
