This is oddly one of the hardests decisions I have to make on the game, and even today, I'm not sure wich path is best.

In one hand I despise Bartrand, and think he deserves to die for leaving Hawke and Co to die and for murdering his own servants with an considerable amount of cruelty.

On the other hand, this decision seems to hurt Varric quite a lot, since despite everything, he still cares about his brother, and it's an scar I would rather not give him.

So, what everyone else think? Should I spare Bartrand for Varric sake? Or just not bring Anders along and allow the deed to be done?

I have a tough time with that as well and it all depends on what style of play I am using for my Hawke.  You could tell that despite everything Varric still has some feelings for his brother.  Unless I am playing a nasty version of Hawke I usually let him live figuring that the idol is what in the end caused him to go from just being a greedy dwarf to being an insane one.

Considering that Bartrand appears to be beyond repair, it might be more merciful to kill him.

It's his brother, and his choice IMO, so it all comes down to whether or not Anders is there and called on.

Doesn't really matter to me either way. I'm over the betrayal thing enough to accept Varric sparing him, but do not care enough to stop Varric from killing him, either. All that matters is that he won't be a danger to others. He's gone mad, but he's not a mage; take away the knives and you're fine.

This was one of the easiest decisions in the game for me. If anything Hawke should be the one to do it if Varric can't. It's only a hard decision for Varric if you bring Anders and ask his input.

For me the hardest decision in the game was whether to kill Anders or not when he was a friend. Or maybe if I should kill off Carver or make him a warden.

In "Family Matter" I bring Anders with me and spare Bartrand.

If you bring Varric with you in Fenris's companion quest to confront Danarius ("Alone"),Varric will try to convince Fenris not to kill his sister (Varania).

Bartrand might get better in the sanitarium.

I have him killed without hesitation. While I wouldn't have the hangup on the personal sting of betrayal that would no doubt affect Varric, I don't value Bartrand's life enough to try to encourage Varric to spare him either. We came there to kill him, so that's what we're going to do. Similarly, I don't bother encouraging Fenris to spare Varania, because it's not my problem and she made a pretty bad case for herself.

I'm curious in all the possible outcomes with Varric. Neither of them are resolved in DA2. The Bianca upgrade, the fate of Bartrand... or even the possibility that both have an effect on the other.

I imagine that Bartrand can be handled with just a few lines of dialogue in Inquisition, should the writers actually care enough to acknowledge it. I suspect nothing will become of the Bianca upgrade.

I'd be disappointed if it means nothing. Considering how pissed off Cass was that Hawke found it, how it made Bartrand and Meredith crazy, and how the same red lyrium material has driven all kinds of people insane and sparked an all out world war. lol

Cassandra: "The lyrium that the Champion gave to you. What did you do with it?"

Varric: "Oh that old thing? You know dwarves and their trinkets, always parting ways."

Cassandra: "You're not as good a liar as you say, dwarf. Tell me the truth."

Varric: "Sigh...if you really want to know so badly." [arms Bianca and fires a bolt at a tree stump. The stump then caves in and vanishes, leaving a smoldering red crater]

Cassandra: o___o'

Varric: "I know. Beautiful, isn't it?"

I don't care about Varric's feelings for his brother. He left me to die, so I want to return the favor.

Killing him is the nice option, because if Anders temporarily heals him, then he asks to die. He doesn't know what is happening if you kill him without healing him. Varric will be okay with you after a while if you kill him and heal him. He will approve if you just kill him. Best solution: Don't do the stupid quest!
