I'm starting think Bioware has a short hair women fetish. Every female companion has short ass hair! Vivienne has almost no hair! Sera has a weird, bowl cut and Cass has short hair as well. The only females that have long hair is Leliana and Scribe girl...their not even in the party! I wish we had Sera with longer hair....oh well. ![]()

Also easier to manage. They're all women on a battlefield. You ever try fighting with hair down to you hips?

Indeed. Think of some games with long hair that's animated. Most likely it clips massively. Geralt in Witcher 1... yeesh!

But they're in magical game world! No one can touch them! They can even have... magical hair...

Spoiler
Don't forget just what it takes to have good looking long(ish) hair, IE: Lara Croft in Tomb Raider (PC) with TressFX. A setting that gives nearly 100% accurate hair behavior. The downside? Not even Nvidia's mighty Titan ZX ($3,000 Graphics card, not PC, Graphics Card) can run it without tanking the frame rate by 60%.

Elves are back to being short human with pointy ears I see.
I miss the da2 look already with the lithe frames and the big eyes.

For some reason, I can't seem to agree with your statement.

She was a slave, so I don't expect her to look great or even healthy.

Who are people kidding? Even using the DAO elf design she's not likely to be considered attractive unless no eyebrows, clashing makeup and gauntness are your thing.

She looks as bad in Act 3, after years of being a Hawke's service. And I don't think Hawke would treat her as a slave (at least if you choose the appropriate options).
We don't have anyone change appearance in DA2 though.

I really wish people wouldn't always bring up this picture when they want to say something negative about the DA2 elf design. Yes, I agree it's not a particularly nice picture and she's not the best designed elf, but she's also in mid sentence which can do wacky things to anyone's face.
There were strange looking elves, like Orana and the ones around Kirkwall, but there also well designed ones like the party members, Orsino, Lia and even Athenril and Marethari.

I know, but the fact is that after three years her design doesn't make sense. We don't have anyone change appearance in DA2 though.
I doubt honestly that their intent was to portray her status as a slave. I don't blame the art design for her though. While I don't like much DA2 elves, there were better looking NPC elves in the game. Her face is likely a result of the lack of enough development time.

That's quite the exaggeration considering my $450 R9 290 can run the game with only a 20% loss in FPS when TressFX is enabled.

Well, I probably should have quantified it by saying it's a drop from 288FPS to 118~.
If you're running at lower framerates or have a different bottlenecker, it'll hit your system different. The average is 40% on Nvidia, AMD cards tend to fair much better. But even at your figure, a 20% Frame rate hit for one effect, put on one character? The illustrative point stands hyperbole or no. Good hair is a resource hog.
