Hi, this is a general combat strategy question. When you encounter a boss that has guards or "helpers", is it better to kill the boss first or all of his guards/helpers and then attack the boss? Thanks for any tips. :)

Depends on class, armor, party, etc. If the "helpers" aren't a threat I'd go after the "boss" an vice versa. Like I said it depends.

In almost all cases I kill helpers first, then focus everyone's attention on the boss.  This works best if you can use AoE spells that ALSO hit the boss.  Exceptions to this are where the helpers take more time to eliminate than is worth it for the overall DPS drop, either because you're more or less immune to their attacks or they have inordinately high health.

Well as far as class and such, I'm playing a human, noble rogue. I'm around level 15 and I have a good mix of archery and dagger fighting. I have Leliana, Wynne, and Morrigan in my party and they too have nice gear and skills. Well I'm in the Brecilian Forest and went messing with a tombstone and suddenly a bunch of enemies pop up and the battle begins! The guards aren't too hard to get rid of but the boss (a reverant I think) is pretty powerful. He's taking party members out quickly. So that's why I wondered if my party would be better to just go for the boss and get the little guys later. Thank you so much for your input. PS: the only two AoE spells I have are Earthquake and Blizzard. :)

As the above posts have said, it depends.

Mage bosses I try to eliminate asap, anything else I usually leave for last.

But there are exceptions, example the archers supporting Cauthrien need to go down asap, ain't nobody got time for dat scattershot spam. If there is any mage supporter around it also should be eliminated right away.

Have you set up tactics for the party members? I am asking because the default settings are not the best possible.

No, I never got the feel for using tactics so I'm manually controlling all party members. I'd like to learn how to use tactics it just seemed a daunting task so I never messed with it. If I knew what I was doing with tactics I'm sure I could use them to my advantage. :)

The party members fight quite well with proper tactics, so you don't have to micromanage everything. Tactics are especially useful for "special situations" such as elite enemies, mages and so forth.

There are guides, such as this one for setting them up.

If you're party has high enough DPS to take down the revenant quickly, it doesn't really matter who you slay first. But generally speaking it is convenient to slay the others first, especially the mage skeleton that shows up in one of those encounters.

Meh, don't bother with tactics, micromanaging ftw.

Regarding boss killing, there are a couple of exceptional cases.

Sometimes a fight ends when the boss is killed. Offhand I can think only of Zathrian, Archie and the Harvester but there probably are more, especially if you consider lieutenants as well and not only proper bosses. In such cases the order depends on whether you want the kills and XP for the minions or not. In the Harvester's case there is no point in trying to rack up kills anyway because there is no save after the Harvester goes down; the achievements get unlocked but that's all.

In Cauthrien's case it can be easier to take her outside and shoot her before turning one's attention to her entourage.

Normally boss first since quite a few bosses are like "ZOMG wait!" when they have 1hp left.

I always go for the boss first and let my teammates take out his/her minions. The exception to this is if said boss has mage helpers. Then I take out the mages first because of the massive damage they can do, then turn on the boss.

It works for me because the big bad is usually so focused on me and my awesome, lethal skills that he/she doesn't even notice my teammates. :)
