Why don't game desingers let us remove quests from our journal?

Skyrim, Mass Effect, you name it, games tend to stick quests in our journal and won't let us get rid of them. I especially despised Skyrim for this since you would pick up a quest without meaning to and it would be some quest you just didn't want to do, like several of the Daedric quests or maybe the initial Dark Brotherhood or Theives Guild quests.

 

STOP IT!

 

Why not divide the journal into three parts: 1) quests to do; 2) quests completed; 3) quests deferred/rejected/not interested?

That is what the console is for... oh wait.

 

Btw the Daedric and DB are some of the most interesting quests in the game

If you can remove it by accident then people would complain about that aswell.

For me its not a matter of OCD. Just because a quest is in my journal doesn't mean I am going to do it. It is a matter of organization. I would like to have quests that I don't want to do segregated off into a bin of deferred/rejected quests so that I know what I still have to do without having to wade through lots of stuff I don't want to do.

 

I hated the ME1 inventory system that was totally cluttered with repeated items and stuff you wanted to eventually sell. In DAO they let you move stuff from your inventory to a junk category that you could later sell. That idea should be extended to the journal: some quests are simply junked, although if the player changes his/her mind, they could then be "unjunked" and made active again.

You can deactivate any quest in skyrim (as well as each activity listed under the misc quest)

It's amazing the quest journal worked so well in ME1 and ME2, but was so broken in ME3.

It's amazing the quest journal worked so well in ME1 and ME2, but was so broken in ME3.


It was only broken if you were actually treating the fetch quests as something that needed your attention. The mistake was putting them in the journal at all.

The real problem, as I saw it, was putting every quest in one massive list. If the list was organized into groups based on priority for the story it would work out a lot better.

I had a similar idea: to have a separate "artifacts" tab and file only recovered items there. The popup when you scan something actually has an "Artifact" header.
