That dramatic bridge galloping looks more like a cutscene than actual gameplay to me though? idk, maybe I'm just overly hopeful.

Yes, looks like a cutscene.

But seriously, Bioware, if any of you is following this topic, it would be really nice to know. Even if they just disappear, better to know about that now so we can make our peace with it.

It could be a cutscene(actually this is likely) but most of the scenes in the trailer that appeared realtime where taken from weird angles(as in not over the shoulder). Its really bugging me since bioware refuses to confirm this or not even when its been asked over and over.

Would be cool if they had their own horses as well, but I'm thinking they'll probably just go poof and then reappear whenever you dismount.

Skip to 2:40 in this vid and theres no other companions while on horseback when the camera pans behind the Inquisitor. Keep in the mind this early pre alpha so anything can change but yeah, the dwarf demo is really disheartening.

I also wonder what will happen to the companions.

Atm I feel like the horse riding doesn't add much to the game, because there's no mounted combat & the animal won't be able to get everywhere you might want it to go. So it's just a faster way of traveling along roads compared to running, but you will have to dismount as soon as enemies pop up? Feels like a bit of a waste to even put this in the game, imo. Even more so if you consider the fact that we also get to instantly fast-travel.

Do they also stay in that hammerspace when you get off said horse? I've watching all the demo footage, and I couldn't find any indication that your companions were ever actually physically behind you.

They were behind the Inquisitor but you couldn't see them because of the camera angle.

If you watched the demo footage, at around the 11.20 mark you'll see the Inquisitor get off the horse, after a short walk up a hill you can then hear Iron Bull and Sera having a conversation in which Iron Bull says to Sera "But think of the mayhem Sera. Maaaaayhem!" ;) So yes they are definitely following the Inquisitor :D

the dwarf demo swoops around to see them once or twice. The other demos just kept the camera tightly focused on the main character. (And I'm pretty sure the other characters were set to stay back as far as they could, since I saw Iron bull just hanging around with the ranged during at least one fight)

The companions will mostly disappear while on horseback. It's unfortunate, but I don't know what else bioware could do. They seem to have enough trouble just getting the companions to walk along side the player character properly (takes up a huge amount of memory from what I hear), let alone doing it with horses. And just having the companions running behind quickly would look ridiculous. Maybe well be able to have all the companions on horse back in future games, but not this one sadly.

I dunno, the horse in the E3 demo looks HUGE. You could probably fit IB, Beardy, and the entire cast of DA2 on its back and still have room left over for the Warden and his/her love interest.

Also, I never noticed this before, but the horse in the pre-alpha build has white stockings! Perhaps there's hope for horses in DAI that aren't just dark bay? FINGERS CROSSED.

A huge amount of memory just to follow your character? I ain't buying that excuse for a minute.

Heck in Everquest, over 15 years ago, it was super-easy to have a 20+ long line of npc's following you (Trains), just aggro th eplayer and chasing them.

I don't see how it could be super-taxing, with modern hardware and technology, not to mention memory (I played EQ with like 256 mb of memory) when most modern pc players have 8GB or more of ram and video cards can have up to 3-4gb of vram...

They get stored in your saddlebags of holding. Or a Tardis brand backpack or something.

... I want a Tardis brand backpack now.  Someone make this happen; oh, and put a sonic screwdiver in the back, yeah?

The simple answer is: Graphics got better.

I am not buying the excuse either but I also believe you are comparing apples and oranges. You can't just look at an older game and say that game did it so a new game should be able to do the exact same thing. Memory may have increased but so have the textures, polygons, etc, which also require more memory than ever. I still think it is a cop out though. If Bioware can have multiple mobs and companions on the screen at once, I don't see how multiple mounts makes much of a difference. It is that I like Bioware's story telling but I do believe they can do much better on a lot of other matters. I believe the company has a few too many weaknesses, ie hair.

I'm pretty sure the disappear. If they rode along you, they'd have put that screensht out there by now, they had tons of demos and trailers with mounts in them.

To me there could only be 2 reasons why bioware hasn't come and reassured us.

1) They're going to follow us on a mount and we have nothing to worry about.

2) They're not even sure themselves. It's alpha and they are working on trying to make them follow you, so they can not yet state if it's in there or not. Ask again when in beta.

I really, really want to know this ... Each E3 demo and interview I kept thinking "Why is nobody asking what happens with the companions?" - especially when they showed the horse and even talked about other mounts and stuff - but, strangely, nobody did ...

(In the meantime, I suspect they really will just disappear. I think the devs would have shown them off by now if it was otherwise. But I'd be very happy if I'm proven wrong because I wouldn't use the mount system much if it makes the companions just go poof.)

Should be like in Skyrim. You summon your horse and all your companions also call their horses with an horn.

Is it really a big deal ? Yes it looks wrong, but has no impact on the game as it plays. I'm more concerned with how mounts and combat works, there is no mounted combat, we know that. What we don't know is if horses can only be ridden in non combat areas, or if they vanish when you get attacked etc.

For me personally, yes. I'm curious about the points you just raised, too ... just not as much. I remember that in other games like Oblivion (I haven't played Skyrim) there was no mounted combat either - or I just couldn't handle it properly, I'm not sure - so I always dismounted to fight and the horse would stand by or walk/run away. Maybe it'll work similarly in DA:I. Get attacked - either flee on your mount or get off ... I don't know, I guess I'm just too obsessed with characters and story.

I've never played Skyrim, but I remember in Oblivion getting so fed up of getting on and off the horse that I just stopped using them and either walked or fast traveled.

My concern is they are making DA:I bigger just for the sake of making it bigger and no other reason and horses and lack of anything to actually do with them other than ride them is a disguise for that.

That is not like Skyrim at all.

I think you're right. However, there's a mod that does exactly what Bfler is talking about. So theoratically (maybe it's more complicated), if some modders can do that, a AAA developer like Bioware should be able to do something like that too.

You put them in your pocket Doraemon style.

I watched the Witcher 3 vid earlier where Geralt is riding alongside 3 or 4 people, but bare in mind DA:I is cross gen not next gen.

Doraemon is great. Also I'm not hopeful. All the companions not selected are already pokeballed anyway.

gotta catch em allll
