I know it's cheating, but everyone hates the tower of Ishal. Endless dungeon crawling, average loot, time-wasting and extremely depressing when it's a cold winter's night. Is there any way one can skip it or go straight to the ogre at the top?

Casual difficulty and steamroll?

I don't recall any mods for it. Just Skip the Fade.

What class are you playing? Ishal has some of the nicest fighting in the game, and repeat playthroughs tend to go a lot faster than the first time.

And no, not everyones hates Ishal. Together with the Wilds it is the first bit of fighting that is common to all origins, and so it it a nice opportunity to find out how the new character compares to to the others. The tactical situation is non-trivial, and the challenge pushes you towards discovering the strengths of your character. To find your feet, so to speak.

Don't stop to open any chests. Thats all I can come up with. I'm not sure if you have to kill all the enemies to get to the next area.

I am using a mage! OH WHY DID I CHOOSE SUCH A SLOW FIGHTER!!!!!

Console commands just make me crazy!

I love your suggestions, but I just wanna teleport to the top of the tower or something! Can the console do that? Now THAT would be fun!

I get that some people enjoy the tower, I kind of like the fade, my conscience doesn't allow me to skip it.

I love the Tower of Ishall, lots of fun fights in there plus I get to recruit a mini mabari army for a bit, f*** skipping it!

That being said, yes you can skip it with console commands. You could either teleport to the third floor right away, skip to Flemeth's Hut, or straight to Lothering.

Use the console command " runscript zz_pre_debug " (without the quotations), and you'll find the options to places you can teleport to there.

If you've never used the console then look here to get a hang of it:

I'm pretty sure there's a few instances where you can just beeline straight to the next floor (the last one before the ogre might be tricky, I have no idea if the darkspawn that are shut behind in the optional rooms will attack if you attempt to head straight for the exit). Set it to casual and the whole thing can probably be done in 5 minutes or less.

It's pretty benign compared to the massive tediousness known as the deep roads and brecilian ruins

If you are a rogue with good stealth you can sneak your way to the top. Your companions will teleport to your location at every cut scene, so you will not have to fight until the ogre. Getting enough stealth to sneak successfully may involve some cheating.

Other than that, what she ^^^ said. :)

In the Deep Roads, stealth can bypass almost all fighting except for the spider queen and the bit after you meet Branka. The spider seems a lot easier to kill in the area close to the level exit, since there's a nice bottleneck that Shale can plug securely, especially when force-fielded.

Just send Leliana ahead. Area transitions automatically teleport the rest of the party to the controlled character.

At the tower it isn't quite so easy because you cannot transition to another area once your toon has seen some enemies. In many cases you have to to clear the whole floor to get her to calm down.

I've used that mod.  It gives you the option at the end of each Origin story to decide if whether or not you want to skip Ostagar (straight to Flemeth's hut).  Like Skip the Fade, you'll get XP during that skip (as well as any unique items you'd find).

And there's also this mod you can use to simply speed things up: http://www.nexusmods...age/mods/2672/?

It gives you a usable item ("Ashes of Death" book) that you can drag into your toolbar, and click each time you want to end a battle.  It's the same as the console command "runscript killallhostiles", but faster and easier if you're feeling lazy  ^_^

^^I have used the ashes of death when testing mods, to get through an area in a hurry^^. It makes short work of the Arch Demon :D

What I like about this game is the enemies are placed very tactically in certain places. Like in the Korcari Wilds with the bridge with the mage and the traps. I also like the beginning of the tower.

What I'm not a fan of is rooms with big groups of enemies just to have a big group of enemies. It pretty much forces you to pull and pulling is really cheesy.

Pulling is never necessary, if your team has sufficient firepower and/or crowd control. Blazomancer demonstrated that just recently in a very impressive way, by taking Cauthrien and her minions down so fast that they're dead before you realise what's happening...

Regarding the Wilds and Ishal, a mage can definitely steam-roller the opposition, even solo. It may be more difficult for rogues and warriors since their development is artificially slowed down by things like level requirements. Also, you don't get to select and train your companions at that early stage, so you have to make do with what you get. Mage Wardens get everything they might want - extra ranged firepower, or a tank if they're so inclined - but I bet that rogues and warriors would rather respec their adds if they could (especially the sad little mage that you get for the tower).

With any other class early except mage you're not going to have crowd control. Unless you count dog's group stun. The closest thing you're going to have to crowd control is single target stuns and knock downs.

I've only played mages these past couple of months, but I bet that quite a few people here could show that the team of a warrior or rogue Warden doesn't have to be slower than a soloing mage. Or at least not much.

Perhaps a challenge is in order? Wilds or Tower, high noon, fraps at twenty paces?

What I like about the Tower is that one believes it is crawling with Darkspawn; not just rooms of a dungeon to be cleared for loot. There is a believable motive to try and get to the top and light the signal, and is not dismissed easily to gather thermal clips or some such for the next area.

Plus there are challenging encounters, allied Mabari, siege weapons (or was this in RtO?), and much more. But then, I like the Fade; am somewhat apathetic when in the Brecelian Forest, and could be tempted to skip that area except for the humor and dialogue.

Oh gosh, this! ^^^^^

None of the parts of the game that seem to irritate 90% of the players bother me at all... I could happily play through Ostagar, the Deep Roads, Redcliffe, and especially The Fade, a million times. My playthroughs die of boredom in the Brecilian Forest (NTB style). And Denerim. ("Denerim!", she sneered, wth palpable disgust.) Just the thought of the Landsmeet , rescuing Anora, or slogging through the werewolf ruins... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Yes, there are ballistae on the second floor, strategically placed. Ballista kills don't give XP but it's just too much fun. The bolt knocks the enemy down and pushes them back; the ballista is ready to fire again just when they're finished getting up. Rinse and repeat until they have enough and die in disgust. My MinXP toon ballista'd everyone on that floor.

The ground floor is probably the toughest with regard to placement, the third with regard to numbers.

It's nice that so many people love the tower. I like the ending ogre, but I don't think that the second floor is really necessary. I mean, we've got three good ones already! It might be short, but ARRRGH! It's a bit tedious. I guess I just have to be in the right state of mind. The thirteenth playthrough, though! I know all of you people are likely on your twentieth playthoughs, but still.

Personally, I stopped counting after over 20 sessions. Then one day I realized that although I still had not yet seen everything, or heard every dialogue treasure, I was not going to find one of these due to my own play style, and that was likely not going to change. I needed fresh eyes

So instead, I passed my addiction on to family.... ^_^

One of my playing habits was to set personal challenges for myself; timed sessions thru the Fade or the Wilds, gather all of some set of item or loot, be true to RP and the personality of the character, etc. This helped in keeping it fresh for as long as it did.

@ Rosey

LOL, I see what you mean. The second floor can be loads of fun, though, especially for a mage. For example, the two sets of three genlock archers are rooted to the spot, they won't give chase. So you can inject the middle one in each group with Walking Bomb, go away, and wait for the detonation. You can cast Flame Blast or Cone of Cold through a wall and hurt the buggers without them even seeing you. Winter's Grasp and Drain Life don't require line of sight either. The glyphs can be very useful in the tower, and the repulsion glyph naturally lends itself to all kinds of fun. Not to mention that you can simply nuke the hell out of everyone with Fireball. Have you ever tried the ballistae?

Been through the Wilds and the Tower about a dozen times, perhaps fifteen. However, the first couple of times I took my time to get the hang of things and to really get into whatever toon I was playing. Sometimes I even reloaded a quicksave and replayed a fight until I 'got' it. That way the tower took two to three hours easily but what I learnt served me well throughout the rest of the game, and now I can blaze through in a tenth of the time. I.e., I am fast now because I was slow then. Perhaps you haven't seen much of a speedup because you weren't slow enough? Philosophically speaking.

All classes a bit of a learning curve, and mages more so than most. Given that, it makes sense to get it out of the way as quickly and efficiently as possible, because otherwise you can muddle on with little satisfaction all the way to Archie and his blue sneezes. If you study your toon closely during the tutorial phase (say, up to Lothering) then you've got the learning curve out of the way and can concentrate more on having fun.

P.S.: I made the fighting style video thread so that people can look at stuff and get inspiration for new things to try out. My learning curve would have been a lot shorter if I'd seen some of the stuff there early enough. I didn't even discover the joys of mass shattering before I was some fifty hours into my first playthrough...
