Since we've been cluttering the lovely 'Meet the Heroes' thread like nobody's business.

My point, as someone who's had long hair for all of forever: it's really not as difficult as y'all seem to think.*

*to live with. Animating, it's probably more difficult than anyone thinks. But I can live with clipping if they give me the option to live with the clipping.

What is difficult? To animate it? To live with it? To go to war with it? Do you see what the gymnastic girls in the Olympics do with their hair? It's pulled back in a tight bun or small pony, slathered with product (glitter optional!), and tamed with barrettes. Not a single strand goes awry because it can't during competition.

As someone else who also has long hair, if I were to join the military the very first thing I would do is chop it all off. There is no way in hell I would bother dealing with washing it, pulling it back, using product to manage flyaways, and all of that garbage when my male counterparts just do swish-swish with a tiny amount of shampoo and are done. I've had short hair periods in my life as well. It is considerably easier to live with. And yes, I do know that there are active servicewomen who do have long hair. If they can live with it good for them, it just wouldn't be my choice. But do notice that there are military regulations regarding the length and style of hair. You won't see any of those women going into combat with the hair featured in some of the DAO mods.

[edit]

I will say though that I really don't care what kind of hair players choose for their PC. The realism argument doesn't influence me in this case. It's a video game. While I personally think some of the styles are ridiculous, I certainly don't begrudge other players from using them. Whatever floats your boat.

One thing games don't portray is thick hair. I have pretty thick hair (not curly, but not quite straight either), and it's just a nightmare to deal with at any length that isn't very short. But most short hair cuts actually have relatively thin hair, which does make sense seeing how common it is IRL.

Yeah I have thick kinky hair and it's not long. It's hell on earth to deal with.

I wish my hair was long and straight. That'd be so much easier to deal with.

But honestly I love my PC's having long pretty hair. As long as it's optional who cares? If you're so bothered by it just don't pick it.

Ah, yes, to clarify for people who weren't following the previous discussion: to live with. I am in no way denying that animating hair is a ******.

I've never been one for blow-drying my hair, if I needed it dry in the morning I just washed it at night. And flyaways have never been an issue for me except when I've had short hair, because the weight of my hair wouldn't hold 'em down anymore.

Further clarification: I also mean there seems to be a prevailing sentiment that long hair is universally difficult to manage (and thus should not be included), which is manifestly untrue.

I have to blowdry my hair to handle it when it isn't MShep default length. Blow-drying is a big cultural taboo in NA (for men, at least) as I learned to my confusion when I was a teen, and I've never really heard the end of it. If I don't blowdry my hair, though, it just turns into a mop. Blow-drying allows me to at least style it.

If that great gif is for a point more than hilarity then it is full of delicious irony too. The "attacker" has hair just as long as the "victim".

Also in a melee if you're being dragged around/down by your hair then it being long wasn't really the issue in the fight.

Native Americans had varying lengths and styles, their ability to melee was not hampered. The Chinese had varying lengths and their ability to melee was not hampered. These examples can go on and on...

If I get my hair wet no matter the length it will puff up and stay in place. If there is a hairstyle that resembles my hair in that state I'll definitely pick it.

Long hair games for me is a no no only because I like some amount of realism in games and little things like loose hair irks me.

Blow-drying is the worst. It shaves approximately 15 minutes off my dry-time, and my arms get tired.

Now I'm just imagining Vivienne getting the Inquisitor ready for the ball and setting herself up as a magical salon dryer.

That's often true.

However I just started playing Dragon's Dogma and was pleasantly surprised at how many styles there were. Long, short, straight, wavy, curly, thin, thick. Quite a nice variety, none locked to sex either.

The main issue I have with long hair, or long hair mods, is clipping. Some styles I've seen have been pretty sensible, but the clipping is horrendous. The moment there is movement with this one the braid clips through her torso.

I can live with clipping as long as I just have the option, you know? And if you don't like the clipping there are plenty of short styles.

But I'd dear love more styles that are updo long hair. Like a crown or coronet braid would be so great none of my Inquisitors would ever have a different 'do. All we've got atm is the bun, since even the ponytail style are very, very short.

As I said previously, I don't begrudge other players using certain styles. I have dozens of short hairs to use with DAO, and I specifically filtered out all of the long beauty pageant hair. But clipping is probably one reason why the default hair doesn't include any long (below shoulders) hair. The devs don't like clipping any more than we do and try to avoid it when they can. Sometimes it's unavoidable though.

I thought that DA2 made some nice advances with the hair, although I do wish there were more updos rather than loose hair. I thought it was a shame that Tallis got one of the best ponys in the whole game. =/

Hmm. I was hoping whoever came up with the system for Tomb Raider put out a paper discussing their technique. Apparently no.

She also had the only true red (although it was a touch dyed-looking) in the game. Not that I don't love ginger, but there's more than one shade of redhead.

Long hair for DA neither male or female can have real long hair in DA.And we past the point asking nicely.

How cool it would be if my Inquisitor could look like this.
