DA2's hair did have physics, lets not forget that. It was quite limited but at least we had it instead of static hair.

To be precise, DA2 added some bones to the character skeleton used for animations. Whether there's any physics applied to them vs some animation done by hand is anyone's guess. (personally I'd guess the latter, as I'm under impression DA engine didn't have option for physics-driven bones)

Yeap only Lara stands out. The other characters who has plain static hair looks really out of place. It's the most noticeable in ME3 as well. Only Shepard and companions looks great. Other NPCs looks really bland. It would be great other characters appearances wont be that far off as it's immersion breaking. Anyway, in Witcher 2, you can see Geralt's pony tail movement. It's not using any technology. It would be great that hair wont be static anymore?

Also, sorry to hijack this thread. I'm more interested in lip-synching and teeth honestly. I find Psycho's teeth (Crysis 3) looks quite realistic. Claire (Crysis 3) on the other hand don't look bad either. It's 2014 and DAI using FB3 engine, i hope we won't have bad animations anymore <3

Han Shot First posted this in another hair thread (Who'd have thunk they would be so popular).

If i understand correctly, Witcher 3 hairs are static as well. I believe they added some touch (animated) on certain parts of the hair. The best is still TresFX. But performance wise consoles will be crying compared to PCs.

No idea but at least it looks like hair which is a start. I'm not expecting Rapunzel.

Triss eyes clipping and Yenn's eye moving are really realistic. I sense that is CGI.

Until World War 1/2 soldiers were dressed in bright flashy colors making them easy to spot and shoot them on the battlefield. Traditions often make no sense and put you in a disadvantage.

Okay, no, I have a problem with this. The uniforms were not a disadvantage until guns became more of a Thing in war, which was really what happened with the Revolutionary war. Camo only works if you're fighting guerilla warfare (in which case camo is the whole point), which is only a recent development in mass fighting. The culture of the bright, easily identifiable uniform and marching in strict formation came from years of medieval warfare, where the point is to form your force into a hammer that crushes the opposition. When you're getting up close and personal with your enemy, it's kind of important to easily know who you should and should not be stabbing.

Wouldn't that be awesome in combat? I approve of long hair in DAI; my enemies having long hair.

If you go into a fight knowingly and aren't sucker-punched by your opponent, you can also use the leverage to launch yourself at them.

Ever been pulled on your hair? It HURTS like a mofo. Pulling hard on your hair hurts so much that you let yourself fall to the ground instinctively because resisting hurts even more-  It takes much less force from the attacker to put you down that way.

Someone like a fantasy adventurer can reasonably expect to get set on fire or be stabbed, which I am reasonably sure hurts a lot worse than getting your hair pulled, considering that quite a number of people are into getting their hair pulled. Especially if they're grabbing a braid where the force of the pulled-hair over the entire scalp, it doesn't really hurt that much.

Let's not ignore that Eomer also had longish hair, tied his hair up under his helmet, and then added an even longer ponytail to the top of his helmet. Which was never used to yank his helmet off because if you're fighting and have a sword, you're probably going be more concerned with using the sword than acting like you're in a wrestling match.

I actually don't see a big problem in characters having long hair. Wasn't Ashley in ME3 having long hair? The helmet solves that problem. No?

I go with short hair, never been a fan of long hair, and I find it never looks good in games.  It's why I have trouble creating a good female character.  Male characters are easy, bald hair, black beard, the Mike Tyson eye tattoo, bam you got yourself a badass.

I thought we are discussing about hair here? If you mean helmet, there's a hoodie armor on Witcher 2 though.

The one bun that makes a female character look like an elderly schoolmarm?   While I'd love to get long flowing locks, I can understand why Bioware might not want to do that due to clipping.  However, the default female hairstyles in DA and DA2 are just. . . well atrocious IMO.  I posted a separate thread showing the character creation video from Elder Scrolls Online.  While there are a couple long styles, most of the options are medium or short, but I personally think the hairstyles just look better.  The hair does a better job of framing the face.  There are also multiple options where long hair in confined - the coronet braids, ponytails with some elegant curls, and a couple different types of buns. No disrespect to the developers of DA as I love the games, but when it comes to hairstyles I always feel like my choices are meh, ugly, uglier, and ugliest.

My hair reaches my lower back braided so it's pretty long. I wouldn't think that animating a single braid is that difficult? I'd also like to point out, for people interested in realism and such, that wearing one's hair in a tight bun when they've got enough to reach their butt, is not practical at all. A braid is a lot more comfortable on the noggin. All that weight piled on top of your head and pulling on your scalp for an extended period of time is not a comfortable experience.

That the military (and gymnastics) have strict regulations on hair has no bearing on this. Their reasoning is superficial and has nothing to do with real practicality, especially in the field - no one has time to worry about a few loose strands of hair, that's moronic. I've done more bush whacking and brush bucking than most people, while carrying heavy packs over all kinds of rough terrain, and having long hair has never impeded me. Caring for it in the field is especially easy because I don't wash it, for obvious reasons. When you can only bring what you can carry, and your pack out could be heavier still, the amenities of home stay at home.

That being said, I'd certainly never wear it down when I'm hunting. But I don't need a flowing long hairdo for my character, I just would like the suggestion that it's there on her off days.

Eh, I remember Bioware saying they were having major trouble with long hair in the engine. I think it's going to be really odd to see an entire world with short hair. I guess it's the style of Thedas and the fashion follows every country. :D

It does not appear long hair is in the game based on everything we've seen so far. Did they confirm it's out yet?

i would really like the option of long hair, even if it is on a braid or ponytail. i can't seem to make myself like short hair enough to use them on my characters, most seem like a bowl-cut or something. At least one or two options would be fine. Mass Effect was a pain to create a character i liked, mostly because i hated every hairstyle avaliable to the player. After seeing Ashley (with her new hair in ME3), Brooks, Miranda and Diana, it wasn't completely out of the question for them to make longer hair.

Spoiler

EVE online for exemple has some nice options on ponytails, and even short hair (second pic). The first model is my favorite, something i would love to see in my Inquisitor and that would have minor clipping issues. But if we HAVE to use short hair, something along the lines of the second pic would be nice.

Spoiler

But, as more of the game is being revealed, i doubt we'll get a long hairstyle, sadly. I really hope to be wrong, but i'm not expecting anything at this point. :(

Hmm. I was hoping whoever came up with the system for Tomb Raider put out a paper discussing their technique. Apparently no.

Tomb Raider basically had one character for which it was relevant ... a cinematic set-piece with multiple characters on the screen is going to take more horse power. Also Tomb Raider got some sponsorship from AMD to implement it, without such sponsorship especially last gen titles like DAI where it can only work on part of their targets are unlikely to receive such cutting edge stuff treatment.
