Dark Energy Plot and a Hero triumphs over all come immediately to mind
And at the end of the day I just come back to one of my first thoughts about the ending, it was trying to make something out of ME that just wasn't ever there to begin eith
Exactly.
And I do think the OvS conflict is there in ME when you look at the geth and Tali's info-dumping about their history in ME1 (especially when looking at how the divergent "heretic" geth came to a programming decision and sided with antagonistic foes), but no, it's not as pronounced as it probably should have been. I still look at it as an extension of "imposing order over the chaos of organics" and the Reapers' interest in advanced civilizations, though.

Yes, to both.

that theme is certainly present, but the story as a whole has always been about survival against an unknowable and overwhelming power, Sovereign in ME1, the Collectors, and the Reaper fleet in 2/3

I can't exactly agree there. Synthetic processes are cold, calculating, and can flip on a dime, and the Rannoch truce is tentative and far from concrete evidence that it won't happen again. Hopeful, perhaps, but not the lynchpin in the Catalyst's argument some think it to be.

They got me with the world exploration part. That's probably the thing I miss the most from ME1. If they make the world seem unique (and with exclusive fauna), I am completely sold.

All I could think about from watching the ME4 development trailer was how much of an ego Casey Hudson has.

I'm not talking about the in universe alliance, I'm talking about the narrative.
For example in DA:O the Mage/Templar issue was settled narratively at the Circle mission, sure in-universe it continued, but for players to wrap that storyline up, only for it to be resurrected, made the central focus, etc.... is generally not a good idea IMO

Eh, I thought the whole thing was filmed in one of those ways where you see a famed athlete having previously overcome some big turmoil to make his comeback. I thought there was a lot of focus on him, and the art style seemed very self-indulgent (the style of the filming).

Eh, okay. It temporarily resolved that particular creator-created conflict, but the overarching issue remains.

No it isn't. Greagoir actually wants to save the Circle mages, but is at a loss as to how this can be done. Whether or not you decide to help the surviving mages defeat Uldred doesn't change the fact that you are still helping the Templars, since the Knight-Commander in this case is an ally of the First Enchanter. The only one who really rails against doing so is Cullen. Also, the Mages' Collective quest also kind of adds to this whole faction business, especially since there's one instance where you can choose between the more mage-friendly Templar of Redcliffe, or the stricter Templar in Denerim.

Heh. I didn't really reach that conclusion, but I do think BioWare went a little theatrical in general this year, what with the live cello player and all (which, mind you, kinda rocked).

the plot of mage/templar and the issues raised by it namely rights of the individual/the safety of the collective, is not resurrected after the Circle to once again become a major plot theme, well the DR arguably, but that is a different beast altogether for a variety of reasons tied into Morrigan's personal arc

I just rewatched it. I didn't mind them all sitting under the lights with the music playing, but, yeah, the whole walking through the halls and swinging door was a little Super Bowl Sunday.

I'm fine with this as long as exploration is made more of a core mechanic, and as long as we don't have a "race against time" plot. ME1 especially draws from games like Starflight and Star Control 2 in how it approaches exploration, but in those games, exploration was essential; you could just go to random systems and conceivably find plot-essential items or meet new alien species that way. With ME1, you can avoid exploration altogether; every place you need to go is marked on your galaxy map to begin with, and with the whole race against time plot, you have a story that is discouraging what the gameplay is encouraging.

Clearly, they should have filmed it in the style of Richard Sherman's post-game interview from the Seattle-San Francisco NFC Championship game earlier this year. "You try me with a sorry writer like Mac Walters, that's the result you're going to get!!"

This reminds me of one BSN'er who basically said that he never once returns to the Citadel until Shepard is forced to at the conclusion of Virmire. This is something that always bugged me about the game. It makes the most sense to just hit Therum, Feros and Noveria (in whatever order) and then head to Ilos, but I just can't, knowing how much I'm skipping.

It makes sense to head back to the Citadel if you're really getting skunked on the random item drops, since there are shops there. Not that interacting with shops is usually worthwhile, but I've levelled into the mid-30s without getting any omni-tools or amps. Quarian armor seems to be pretty rare too.
Other than that, though....

Today's presentation as a whole left me, more than anything, curious and a little frustrated by the vagueness. However, I will admit that the brief glimpse at what appears to be a new Galaxy Map gave me a twinge of legitimate excitement.

Yeah, the whole thing bothered me with the brief reveals, only to lead into more detail on the Sims and sports games. Oh good, I can tackle people in more detail in Madden. Now, when do they allow me to c*ckpunch the QB???
But yes, that galaxy map actually does make me feel the opposite of sad.

They did say we will be exploring a new region of space. That could mean a new a galaxy as well...but I'm not sure if we can travel through galaxies just yet. I wonder who or what creates mass effect in here.
I'm excited, but I think my hopes died...
