Or it's just Christmas time.

PC: Fire up the omni-wreath.

Alien companion: A little ostentatious, don't you think? What's this even supposed to commemorate?

PC: The birth of St. Nicholas.

Alien companion: Sounds like a long and tedious story.

PC: It is.

After the e3 presentation, I totally don't think that the team is just playing around with cool environments in their new engine without any clue of where they are going.

Sure, bring common sense into it.

I'm pretty excited. There seems to be a natural evolution in the right direction for the series. I'm glad for the emphasis on exploration, Mass Effect 1, in my opinion, was the best in terms of immersion; because of the high levels of exploration.

I'm also very curious about who the new protagonist is. The N7 Armor shown in the trailer definitely got my attention.

Maybe ME4 takes place in both galaxies. Like someone discovered an ancient mass relay that actually shoots you all the way past dark space to the Andromeda galaxy, and using it allows you to go back and forth between the new place and the old place... Kinda like what Pokemon Gold and Silver did where you can eventually go back and forth freely between the old Kanto region of Red and Blue and the new Johto region of Gold and Silver.

The mass relays were built by the Reapers, presumably under the Catalyst's direction. Neither the Reapers nor the Catalyst ever gave the slightest indication of being able to travel to another galaxy or of being especially concerned about what was happening there.

I guess it's possible that a few Reapers were dispatched to leave the Milky Way and build a connecting relay in a nearby galaxy, though that would raise the question of what ever became of those Reapers and whether they'd be a threat to the other galaxy, and I get the impression that both Bioware and most players don't want to see the Reapers again.

I for one am excited to travel to a new galaxy, where civilisations build their cities with waist high boxes laid perpendicularly to your motion of travel.

That could quickly get tedious, especially if some of the boxes are colored orange and you have to shoot at them in order to keep moving. Oh, wait....

Lol, I think I am like the only one that is optimistic by the thought that they *might* (likely did) decide to jump ship, completely ignore the prior trilogy and start fresh in a new galaxy.

I don't think they will screw this up. They are acutely aware that they will be closely scrutinized with ME4.

If you're going to throw out most of the setting from Mass Effect then just start again completely from fresh, with non of the baggage. If they want new worlds with an existing background there's no reason to leave this galaxy.

Then why not show us the Milky Way -ie: a galaxy map that is clearly the one that we are familiar with, instead of one that is clearly not the Milky Way?

Because it was thrown together by a designer with precious little knowledge of astronomy perhaps? I don't think most people realise that the Milky Way is a barred spiral.

No. ME3 is still an open wound to many. Despite Bioware wanting to brush ME3 off, it's not going anywhere. What they did will be on everyone's mind. Like if they care or not that doesn't really matter. Feed back is what they claim to care about, but in reality they themselves do what they think is best, and not what we think really. We may give them good ideas, on what they should do, or not do, but in the end it's up to them.

Nice move from "many" to "everyone" there.

But I thought what Bio did was provide us with a super-genius IT plot that ungrateful gamers didn't appreciate?

to me, me3 wasn't the stake through the heart that it seemed to be to most. I had fun with it, and I still do, I've said my piece about the ending a few times... once quite recently, so I don't feel the need to rehash. but, I'm hopeful, I guess. between DA:2, and me3 I think they realize another near-miss won't hold up their bottom line (though me3 & DA:2 did sell quite a few copies from what I understand, though the backlash from the community seems to have softened that a bit). and the longer production times are good signs, to me anyway. so, like I said... hopeful, or I'm simply deluding myself. time will tell I guess.

Considering that the previous trilogy had considerable attention to detail regarding astronomy, I think you can rule that out. First off, they already HAD a galaxy map from the previous game. Second, I find it hard to believe that a designer creating a sci-fi game and specifically an image for a trailer that would be shown to the public would not possess the extremely general (like seriously fifth grade level) knowledge that the milky way is a spiral galaxy.

In the prior trilogy, they actually paid attention to stellar mass, somewhat realistic astronomical distance, tidal locking of planets close enough to their parent star, that habitable worlds around red dwarfs would be tidally locked, that gas giants and ice giants are two distinct classes of planets (and they paid attention to the criteria foe that too), that Earthlike worlds can exist only within a narrow range of temperature and pressure, that gas/ice giants do not form within the Frost Line and thus either migrate inwards or are extrasolar captures.

I mean, sh*t man, I didn't even list HALF of the real life astronomical science that they paid attention to- that's impressive. Yes, they often half-assed or got things wrong, but that is still better than literally any other sci-fi game I can think of.

For those interested, read my most recent post in the Andromeda thread to see the four reasonable possibilities for the appearance of that image that fans have come up with so far. Some, like the "dark energy destroying the Milky Way" ideas are particularly curious.

Well, we've gotten into some lengthy discussion about the feasability of making an FTL trip to the Andromeda galaxy in the Scuttlebut section (A 500-600 year trip for normal FTL, knock off a few centuries for Reaper FTL).  The "Ark Theory" as we're calling it is plausible given certain circumstances, circumstances the writers could easily create if they really wanted to.

Am I actually excited for ME4?  Not exactly, you could say I'm eager to find out what ME4 will actually be, storywise

Let's just say that E3 "trailer" didn't do much to wet my appetite.

It actually annoyed me because it doesn't really tell us anything one way or another.

Well, it tells you that it is most likely a sequel in the sense of the setting being temporally after Mass Effect 3. But, I still suspect they will ignore/avoid the endings altogether by adopting a narrative strategy similar to "ark theory" or something like it. So, while probably a sequel, it wouldn't be a "true" sequel.

Which is exactly what they said they wanted.

words cannot express my excitement

I don't actually feel hype right now, just because there is zero info on it, and I'm trying to restrict my hype for DA:I (too much hype in your system no good for you). But every time I think about ME4, I'm just like Holy crap I can't even imagine what it's going to be like it's probably going to be incredible and  knock my socks off like holy sh*t

Most people are over ME3, if they had something to get over to begin with.

Besides, if they made a game catered to the wishes of the fans, it would be a horrible game.

Excited? No. I've said that I'm indifferent after ME3 and nothing has changed since then. I will consider the new game on its own merits, but gaining my appreciation is an uphill battle for any game with "Mass Effect" in it after ME3. The trailer didn't tell me anything important so I'm still indifferent.

The problem is that anything that would make me more optimistic would likely be a huge spoiler, since my issues with ME3 were mainly with worldbuilding and storytelling. So it's rather likely I'll wait for reviews even should something make me more optimistic.

BTW, is anything known about who's going to be the lead writer?

I want to be but Mas Effect 3 literally killed all of my interest for the series. Even if ME4 somehow ends up being good I don't see my self ever buying and playing it. I simply cannot get over how bad ME3's endings, and Extended Endings, still are. Really sad that Fans made far better Endings through Mods or Fan Comics.

Worse is that Bioware really gave fans a huge middle finger with the "Refuse" Ending where if you don't do as the Reapers say you lose, everyone dies and the next cycle is told how much you failed and to simply obey the Reapers.

Most people aren't, most still have a bitter taste to how ME3 ending and when ME4 gets closer to release the ME3 vids and the such will get a surge of views and old wounds WILL be re-open with many looking at ME4 with very cautious eyes due to how bad ME3's endings hurt.

It's easy to get over how bad ME'3 endings are.
