Pfft, the central game had too much seriousness and not enough humor.

Citadel was badly needed levity after all the "Reapers r srs bsness"

Real levity, not "I am the Catalyst humor"

It needed humor yes, but not the vapid, insipid, and banal drinking humor and overly self-satirical humor that is more meta than appropriate.

What it needed was Black Gallows humor. Wit. Dark humor. Or intellectual humor.

Bah, by the time Citadel came about I was sick unto death of the whole "Dark is deep" mentality of the game.

And you may not have noticed, but Mass Effect didn't do "intellectual" very well.

Eh, you could easy accuse all three games of "dark = deep" mentalities, especially ME1 with its pair of required death decisions and its point-blank genocide offer.

Sometimes dark is just dark because the scenario calls for it, which the Reaper harvest did.  And it could've been, perhaps should have been, darker.

I agree. I really do wish it was darker. For some, it means bleak and hopeless. For me, it means a challenge.

Dark usually is deeper. ME3's problem was that it relied on angsty grim dark instead of actual dark. Which should have been the focus. But yes, it should have been very dark and hopeless. I believe that it should have told you that a vast majority of the galaxies inhabitants were wiped out.

To be honest, taking all players into account along with the previously-established prowess of the Reapers, I think they hit a pretty decent sweet spot between darkness, the series' melodrama, and holding back for the sake of the game.

There were some parts of Citadel DLC that were enjoyable but its placement just seemed wrong and didn't fit well with the story. Maybe after the war was over and our shepard somehow survived or the dlc is a dream/afterlife then fine. Otherwise, it just felt like a whole meme fest for fans. I don't even do the dlc unless I'm bored. I don't even do the party or extra meme's, just the main mission.

Eh, I guess it could be interpreted that way. I didn't see a lot of melodrama per se, so much as I saw a light-hearted and camp story that is trying to hard to have fun.

I'd have preferred if it took itself more seriously.

I think of it as Hacket forcing shore leave after Thessia and Horizon because he knew Shepard was starting to fall apart and wanted Shepard to get his or her head cleared before heading off to the final battle. After the story doesn't make sense, it makes more sense as it's presented... Shepard needs some stress relief or Shepard is going to break soon, force a shore leave so your best soldier doesn't get killed by being too stressed out and anxious.

I think of it as the Normandy requiring an overhaul. My Shepard's angry. When he's angry, he fights better. He gains focus and resolve. Then again, my Shepard isn't really the type that would 'break-down' so to speak, unless something happened to Miranda. Anything else and his stress level would never waver (though granted, it's normally very high, just the way he likes it).

I usually skip the party these days, but I will sometimes do it as a headcanon-y post-campaign deal. I do like the individual meetups, however. My personal favorite is actually Cortez's, because it puts aside camp to focus on friendship, as well as flying.

Your Shepard finds stress to be a good thing? That may be your head-canon, but that isn't how stress works. Stress's effect on the body and brain has been proven, and the fact is it affects you in a lot of ways... And every single way is negative. Look at this list, and tell me stress is good for Shepard when a galactic sized war is going on-

1. Frequent headaches, jaw clenching or pain

2. Gritting, grinding teeth

3. Stuttering or stammering

4. Tremors, trembling of lips, hands

5. Neck ache, back pain, muscle spasms

6. Light headedness, faintness, dizziness

7. Ringing, buzzing or “popping sounds

8. Frequent blushing, sweating

9. Cold or sweaty hands, feet

10. Dry mouth, problems swallowing

11. Frequent colds, infections, herpes sores

12. Rashes, itching, hives, “goose bumps”

13. Unexplained or frequent “allergy” attacks

14. Heartburn, stomach pain, nausea

15. Excess belching, flatulence

16. Constipation, diarrhea, loss of control

17. Difficulty breathing, frequent sighing

18. Sudden attacks of life threatening panic

19. Chest pain, palpitations, rapid pulse

20. Frequent urination

21. Diminished sexual desire or performance

22. Excess anxiety, worry, guilt, nervousness

23. Increased anger, frustration, hostility

24. Depression, frequent or wild mood swings

25. Increased or decreased appetite

26. Insomnia, nightmares, disturbing dreams

27. Difficulty concentrating, racing thoughts

28. Trouble learning new information

29. Forgetfulness, disorganization, confusion

30. Difficulty in making decisions

31. Feeling overloaded or overwhelmed

32. Frequent crying spells or suicidal thoughts

33. Feelings of loneliness or worthlessness

34. Little interest in appearance, punctuality

35. Nervous habits, fidgeting, feet tapping

36. Increased frustration, irritability, edginess

37. Overreaction to petty annoyances

38. Increased number of minor accidents

39. Obsessive or compulsive behavior

40. Reduced work efficiency or productivity

41. Lies or excuses to cover up poor work

42. Rapid or mumbled speech

43. Excessive defensiveness or suspiciousness

44. Problems in communication, sharing

45. Social withdrawal and isolation

46. Constant tiredness, weakness, fatigue

47. Frequent use of over-the-counter drugs

48. Weight gain or loss without diet

49. Increased smoking, alcohol or drug use

50. Excessive gambling or impulse buying

Sound fun? Sound like something you want your most valued soldier going through? If some mere shore leave while fixing the ship helps with stress levels right before the most important battle of the war, then it's something you may want to order your soldier to do.

I always do the party. I do the wild, dance-y party at a ratio of about 3-to-1 with the quiet party. So, when i do the quiet party variations, it's still a bit of a novelty.

I'd rate Grunt's the best meet-up, but it's full of camp. It's awesome, Lol. I do like Miranda's as well, or Jack's if I'm romancing her.

I only really do the party as the mood strikes, but this goes to the abrupt tonal shift that many complain about when it comes to the Citadel DLC compared to the rest of the game in the first place. This is why I never do the party before Cronos. Silly and lighthearted as the clone story is, it at least provides a real danger element with what I would consider to be superior combat sequences to most of the missions in the main story. In the end, one of the most valuable things about the DLC to me, other than getting more time with companions, is the fact that I never have to look at the Presidium again.

Yeah, Citadel has worn out it's welcome. It was a nice gift from Bioware, but it's a one off thing, one last goodbye to the original trilogy.

Now lets move on and return to more serious matters, starting with ME4.

I do hope that ME4 doesn't take itself too seriously, or that I can at least get my PC not to. I guess the latter would be optimal, because no matter how bad things get, it's nice to be able to be flippant to the bitter end.

Dunno how others feel, but the combination of parts from all the DLCs released for ME3 has me optimistic about the tone and variation they'd go for in the next game: the mystery and investigation into the Leviathans, the role-playing responses and non-brainwashed villain in Omega, and the willingness for humor and extracurricular activities with the characters (and another non-brainwashed villain) in Citadel.  Without knowing anything about the setting of the next game to offset my outlook, that sounds promising.

I wish we could visit the strip (specifically Armax) before triggering the meet with Joker that starts the mission. I needs my Nightmare armor!

I have to agree on the tonal shift problem between the party and immediately jumping into Cronos/Earth. In my current run I am leaving the whole DLC for after Sanctuary but will leave Omega and Leviathan for after the party. We'll see if that smooths over the large bump going from the party to the gutpunch that is Priority:Earth.

If we gain war assets for the crew and ship by being on shore leave, why not have shore leave for every ship and crew in the galaxy and when you head to Earth your war assets would be very high.

For the same reason the Enterprise crew is special and the only ship in range 99.9% of the time.

Since you mention Enterprise, you mean Star Trek. And since I don't watch the show, can you explain what your response means?

Sure, I'm just a bit snarky cause of a sore back. Basically its a 'because reasons' response; the protagonist crew is special and unique and matters, while the rest of the fleet, army or whatever are just faceless mooks. Look at the war assets values; the Normandy + her crew outweigh the contributions of entire civilizations like the Salarians. Just an off the cuff remark.

Fully upgraded Normandy counts almost as much as three human fleets combined, if memory serves.
