I think that timed content is worth caring about in so much as rolling it out makes a very clear statement about the value and regard Bioware (or most likely EA) place on sections of their fan base. As such, its discriminate, polarising and kind of shitty. Not good.
Xbox timed exclusive DLC makes me sad

It's nothing personal, it's business. And Bioware has nothing to do with it.

At least it's only timed delay, not full on exclusive.

Why should that matter a jot to those who find themselves on the wrong end of things?

Aye, no such luck for those of us who were left unable to purchase a Collectors Edition for PC because it was a Gamestop exclusive.

True but it sets a dangerous precedent. If EA makes it's development teams develop parts of games that are partially funded by third party sources, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine a day where different retailers pay EA money to develop content exclusive to those who buy from them. Imagine if few DLC are exclusive to Amazon or Gamestop customers. It's already happening with small item DLC in many games, so not really hard to imagine it happening with actual story DLC.
Of-course, this is no where near what is happening with DA:I, but it's something to think about for the future.

I don't understand this timed content thing as I am buying the collectors edition for £119 for PC so does that mean I can only get this dlc 30 days later or even have to pay for it? I understand why people are pissed off as it isn't about the content so much but getting less access to content just based on what system you purchase it for is a form of discrimination though very minor.
Why won't PC players get it anyway as due to my pc running of windows am I not also a Microsoft customer?
Still it does kinda feel like a bit of an F you from EA (especially if you are buying a collectors edition or deluxe) but I wouldn't blame Bioware as without the necessary money EA brings to Bioware we wouldn't have these games as due to RPG's having a lot more content they cost a lot more if you want to make a AAA title but then again Divinity: Original Sin may yet disprove that ![]()

@azrael_1289 : there's no need to 'imagine a day' where that's the case. Sony and UbiSoft have been doing that for 'years'. When Sony does this, they get full exclusive day 1 content for AC (and Watch dogs) for PS3/4 only. Destiny is getting almost the same treatment with some DLC locked behind a 'year' long exclusivity agreement for PS side of things only.
I agree though that I don't want it getting any worse from the 1 month. 1 Month is the kinda thing I can deal with, it kinda sucks, but whatever I can wait an extra month. Technically I can wait a year too, but that is so much more a middle finger then anything else. Here's hoping EA has an actual policy and 'sticks to it' for stuff being limited to a single month, and not wishy washy on that in the future. And that Sony doesn't pick up the next title and push for a year+, or worse, full exclusivity.
...least most of that's pointless stuff like newb weapons or an armor skin or something silly. But... bleh.

Yeah, I know it's happening with platforms now. But imagine if other stakeholders start investing money in content development. DLC A exclusive to PS4, DLC 2 exclusive to people who bought game from Gamestop...so on and so forth. It's a bleak future that is poised to become a reality.

Yeah, I don't mind the incentive from gamestops at a base level but I kinda think they're needs to be a general push to allow all that stuff to be available eventually you know? Not a year later, that's pointless, it's all pre-order bonuses. You come in a week later? You don't get it! Kinda wish it would go the other way and end up having all that stuff end up being a month exclusive.
Actually, seeing that with Alien Isolation. I don't have the money to pre-order it (also, DAI comes out 'on' that day so I... want to wait anyways on the grounds I'd never touch Alien). But gamestop has some exclusive pre-order bonus that is 'literal' story content based off the original movie, reprising the original cast
. I mean, of course i want that, that sounds awesome! But why in the balls is that a pre-order bonus? And why is that tied only to one store? That kinda contents well beyond the basic 'heres a new weapon skin herdederp'.
*sighs* If that 'does' become available later for download it'll probably cost me 10 bucks too. Meaning I have to pay more simply cause I didn't have the money to pre-order heh. It all kinda feels like a bank penalizing you for random stuff. Oh you forgot to show up on sunday at 7pm, you owe us another 20 dollars! but.. your not 'open' at that time, like, ever, and certainly not on sundays... Oh well.

The Alien stuff is also DLC yes, and, it does appear to be content that was only made because of the Budget for Pre-Order bonus and DLC, I mean the plot of Isolation is a OC on a station never visited in the movies, ran by a company new to the Franchise. The likely hood that they had planned to have a rival Corps ship dock there is slim. Very Slim. As for why is it a Pre-Order bonus, or why do they give Pre-Orders. I fully suspect a large part of it is the Second Hand Game market on consoles, the more sales you can make before second hand games are an issue the better. Sure also knowing before hand you've sold X units is great but I don't think any company would make a budget available just to chase pre-sales if there wasn't a benefit to profit as well.
As to why Game Stores get them, they pay the Companies money, why? Because Game Stores face competition from Digital sales, on the other hand the Publishers still see a benefit in stores, the presence of a game in a store drives a lot of sales. The issue for a store is a lot of those sales are of the 'Huh that's cool, I bet I can get it cheaper on line' type through, they obviously are not fans of people doing that so they need an incentive to get people to buy with them instead.... and that incentive is Store exclusive content.

Sony just as bad as MS, look they have a deal with Destiny and have been having deals with ubisoft for years. I wish both company's stop doing this crap. But as long as people say Xbox sucks ps4 sucks . Companies are going make these deals. console wars = more sales.
I agree, but I wonder if we as consumers are better off with DLC being exclusive rather then the games, for that hurt us more then DLC exclusivity at least from my standpoint, for now I just need one console to play everything instead of buying all of them.

1 Month, same as past years/titles. Kinda sucks for the PS/PC crowd but at least it's a short period. Personally, and while I am on the xbox side of things, I'd like to see this cut down to 2 or 1 week. I mean I'd like to see it completely removed, all together, but from a business stand point thats not happening.
As for pre-ordering that's not going away, I sure don't want it to. Pre-ordering, while some don't like it, allows you to spend the money on a game when you have it, not just when it comes out. July is a great example, not much coming out right now, if you don't have any other game to pick up right now you could be paying off DAI right now, or part of it. That's a risk, to some extent, vs 'waiting for a review' and you could always just hold onto the money. But that's generally not how a lot of peoples lives work (or they just have bad self control).
From a business stand point it gives the shareholders/publisher projections and a good idea of how well there game will do. Not a lot of pre-orders and you end up getting games that get shoved out the door quickly because they want it done, they can hamper funding, decline extra funding if required, all that kinda stuff. Destiny pre-orders, as an example are currently massive and they've been getting massive amount of crazy support from Activision as a result. They ended up deciding to already plant half a billion (500mil, yup) for the overall project. That's not just for the base game, the game its self cost a small fraction of that. It's also not all for advertisement, it's a commitment to the longevity of the game, expansions and future updates and so forth as they expect it do basically match CoD or better at this point due to those pre-orders.

No duration has been mentioned yet
Preorder =/= pre-purchase
Destiny preorder numbers are currently so high due to the impeding beta.

Well yeah it's cause of the beta. I've actually been shocked how many people 'don't just pre-order to get the beta. The amount of people 'looking for a beta code omg' has been a mild amusement for me. And yeah, technically pre-ordering isn't the same as pre-purchase and some places you can't even full pay (such as amazon) till they ship.
I was just giving a reason why some people will pre-order from bestbuy or gamestop. It's why I do, I can choose to pay it when I want, in whatever amount I want over said period of time. It makes it a lot more manageable then just ensuring I have the money on the release is all.
Coulda sworn they said it was a month, but if it hasn't been announced I'm just wild speculating its a month then.

Yeah I've been advocating that method for a while now preordered twice to get a code for PS3 and for XBO to enjoy the full length of the beta.
Took me me all but 2 minutes to get them.

Is this timed content even worth caring about? I have a feeling that it's just some miscellaneous perks or items. Bioware has said that the details of future DLC and expansions has yet to be decided. Honestly couldn't give two shits about Xbox fans getting horse armor first.
I am assuming that one or more Story based DLC post release will be timed exclusives on Xbox.

I doubt that this is to be seen as that much of a system mover, particularly over those that already have a PS4.
It may factor in for someone who doesn't have a console at all, but I figure it'd probably see the biggest impact by those that happen to own both.
It has influenced my decision making process as to which console I'll get. My best friend got an XO despite me arguing to the contrary. My brothers-in-law have ps4s, so my wife wanted a PS4 to play with them, and I did as well. When my younger brother got a XO, right around the time of me hearing about timed exclusive DLC, I have waivered in my convictions. I wanted ot NOT get a XO simply because of microsofts previously announced policies. I wasn't "convinced" by the, "Oh, we only ALMOST ****ed you in the ass against your will, but we really didn't so it's totally fine" schtick. With time exclusive DLC and my younger brother getting th e XO, I have considered it, unfortunately.
