I was just thinking of what BioWare is showing off to those who aren't hitting F5 for Inquisition news every day. Realised something most interesting.

There is not a single white human woman in the primary roster. Normally I wouldn't be celebrating a lack of any kind of women, but I think it's amazing in this case. Non-white women hardly ever exist in our entertainment, yet here they are shown as the majority of companions. Sera appears white, but she's also elven hence she's racially not an ordinary white human woman any way.

On top of this, at the E3 presentations, among all the stubble-cheeked protagonists, BioWare showed off their female protagonist in full armour and not making a deal of her gender at all. It's just so... perfect. She was just there, the way she should be.

Well played, BioWare. Very well played, indeed =)

Now can you confirm whether multiplayer is in the game or not? Pretty please with a nug on top? I want to preorder this baby sooo bad, but my choice of platform depends entirely on the existence of multiplayer.

Cassandra?

She doesn't strike me as white. Caucasian, but not white. I googled a bit to see if I was alone in seeing her that way and it seems I'm not alone. Even found a few discussions about her being white-washed in Dawn of the Seeker.

Of course, everything I said breaks down if you consider Cassandra white.

I'm not sure I see a difference between white and caucasian (I mean, aside from the fact that caucasian is a misnomer, I've never heard it used for anything other than white), but I can see the argument for Cass being something else.

But generally, I agree.  It's great to see some women among the sea of stubbled white guys, and it's great to see Vivienne, a woman of colour, featured prominently in so many of the trailers now.

Cassandra is white, perhaps not Anglo-Saxon/Germanic/Nordic but white nonetheless, she looks kinda Italian imo

I'm honestly somewhat blind to race, so that's why I googled to see if others agreed with me or not (and I don't mean that in the "I'm great cause I don't judge based on race"-kind of way, rather the "it's borderline racist that I sometimes have legitimate issues telling somebody's heritage"-kind).

I also googled to check if I was using the right words, and happened upon this answer to a Yahoo question that seemed well-informed with sources and all. So that's the definition I used when writing the OP, but I could very well be wrong and welcome any corrections =)

It's not just white women that's been the problem, it's white men too, imo, even the early Mass Effect games had a very small amount of coloured people (remind me, was ANYONE coloured in DA2?), anyway, now we have Cassandra, and DHMG and even Scribbles. Representation has gotten so much better than the ME1 days (Udina, Anderson and a one-off NPC quest giver Samesh Bhatia were the only three coloured people I believe I ever saw).

Also brown people have been impossible to come by except as huge stereotypes in so many games that when I saw Scribbles and DHMG, the very thought that they might be brown had me happy, I'm glad to see that my skin colour exists in the world of Thedas.

Isabela would be the first example to come to mind for DA2.

Cassandra is Nevarran. I hope that settles the race issue :P

Whatever that means. It's never been clear what their real world counterpart might be.. But it's probably a hodgepodge (possibly with more Tevinter influence) like much of the Free Marches. My closest guess is some Slavic equivalent.

Bioware has always been very diverse in the representation of races.

They seem to enjoy mixing different cultures and races of the real world, and use them for their culture and races in the game.

Ferelden are kind of english/american, Antiva are spanish, Orlais are french, Nevarra they also have an accent I dont recognize (nordic/german?). I might be mistaken, I am not a huge lore follower.

I am spanish, and when I heard Fenryel's father in DA2 I laughed. He even says "maldición" and his accent seemed from Spain. (Even though Antiva seems to be based in the race of latinamericans, more dark)

In DA2 there were all races from Europe, quite curious (spain, england, france, germany), but they used more variation for races making antivan darker, and isabella directly black (she is from another country I guess). So yeah, diversity FTW. I like it.

PS: Regarding Antivan people, they seem to be based in Spain, but with American race, and Italian names. Vincento is italian, he speaks as he is from Spain, but his color is from southamerica. XD

I was not happy with what they showed.

Sera did not look good and Vivienne looked like a robot.
Leliana looked like a completely different person.

With the move to frostbite i simply put it down to the DA team finally being able to make the characters and world the way they want them to be an nothing more, if that means upsetting some ppl an rustling some jimmy's so be it, for me there all over better for the move an change

A better engine allows you to make characters better representations of the way they look and does not mean make them different.

It also allows the artist to make better looking characters and not deformed characters as some of them look.

She's not really primary. By primary it looks like they are referring to party members.

Some very strong wording there young padawan, again opinion thats it nothing more, i prefer all the looks to what we had previous again opinion

But heck its easier to bash someone's hard work an call it deformed than actually praise it especially on these boards

No person criticised your opinion so why are you criticising my opinion if you think it is just opinion?

At E3 many people on stage said please give us your opinions so that is exactly what i am doing.
I am not going to lie just to make you happy.

(not really about the representation @ e3) Have to disagree, take one look at the DA:I character list and you can see Cassandra, and Morrigan And even Blackwall. All human Caucasian characters.

Overall, I think DA:I is doing a pretty good job at representing a variety of genders and races, though I have to admit that I would think of Sera as white even if she is an elf. We've seen examples of black dwarves, for instance, and probably elves somewhere. Greater diversity is just so nice to see reflected in fictional worlds (since, you know, that's how things actually are).
