why graphics so botched?

You're right, it probably could have run on last gen albeit with a few alterations to make it run smoothly. From Software are great developers but it seems they have trouble optimizing their games and their performance hence why both Dark Souls titles suffered from heavy lag in some areas and decreased frame-rates. Their trouble at optimizing led to the downgrade we saw with Dark Souls 2. At least their games ship with little to no bugs I suppose.

Unfortunately true. My video card's fairly old, but can handle ME3 or Skyrim with a very high framerate. I recently was replaying the original, and the FPS still gets very nasty sometimes, especially in larger spaces.

As far as Bloodborne, most games this early in its cycle are still going to be bordering between PS3 and PS4 quality. Witcher 3 or The Rental: 1886 looks to be the graphically best I know of so far. Eh, I'm not particularly bummed.

Agreed here, graphics certainly help but if they're not top notch I'm fine with it.

Thanks for posting this video. I've had a pre-order down for Bloodborne since last summer, but since it's announcement I really didn't know what to feel about it. It's "Souls" I'd think, and then I'd forget about it entirely pretty much until now, a week before release, because it didn't seem to me like any of the trailers since were detailing anything new or that I hadn't already suspected and didn't care all that much for. Hearing that it's more difficult than the Souls games and seeing it, in action, embrace HnS more, I have to say the hype is back, for me at least.

BB pics looks like DkS1 on PC quality-wise I'd say.

 

Or am I the only one who thinks Dark Souls 1 on PC is graphically superior to the sequel?

Bloodborne only looks slightly better.

 

That being said, the graphics of Bloodborne are good and more than satisfactory but I think From Software still need to hire some good developers who know how to optimize properly so they could push out better graphics.

 

Dark Souls 2 in its original build looked just as good graphically as Bloodborne but because they couldn't optimize the higher textures to work with a smooth frame-rate they had to downgrade just so we could have a playable frame-rate. Again I can only assume it's because of how the game processed textures or perhaps they're simply re-using old engines and need an upgrade.

 

Either way when the PC version of one of your games from 2011 with one mod has better graphics than your "next-gen" game then you know you need to do something. It's annoying since From Software are great developers when it comes to every other aspect of a game.

I'm aware but I'm talking about the modded version and even unmodded, the textures were either equal or slightly better than DkS2 textures.

mmm... no DkS2 graphics are superior, aside from lighting. Besides - Blight town and fps loss, and i don't remember flaws such as this playing DkS2.

 

p.s. i just think DkS1 overall environment is reacher than in the sequal.
