Just a quick thought I had...

With 2 trailers now, showing off our available companions (one of which referred to the group as "The Inquisition"), I almost feel like we HAVE to have them. Like, there'll be no "I don't need your help" option, or chance to just 'miss' them.

Not that I have a problem with that, just found it interesting is all. Kinda a new take on it.

What do you guys think? Would you be ok with having allies forced on you? Are there people you'd just end up leaving in a corner at base camp?

I am sure we will have to have Cassandra. For at least the start of the game but other than that I doubt they will all be forced, not that I really mind about that though, if I don't like a character I'll just leave them at the keep. Not recruiting them just feels like losing content to me.

Remember it's your inquisition, they may work for you in a more official capacity than in previous games (I am assuming they will anyway) but you still decide who does and who doesn't for the most part at least.

I'd like that. My first playthrough of DAO, I kept the part of me, Alistair, Morrigan, and I think either Zevran or Shale the whole time because I missed so many companions.

I didn't go into the Lothering Tavern, didn't realize I could. Missed Leliana.

I totally walked past Sten in his cage, never realized he was even there. I never walked close enough to hear him or get the auto-save. Missed Sten.

I listened to Morrigan speak too long in the tower, making Wynne realize she was an apostate and attack. Missed Wynne.

I sent Oghren away ASAP. I did NOT miss him xD

Even if they are forced on me I really won't mind too much. If I don't like someone, I'll just typically not use them, or if I do, very little.

According to the interview with Mike and Mark on Twitch today, you can end the game with only one companion (having caused all the others to either leave or never even recruiting them).

This. This is the thing I'm going to be hitting up gamefaqs for.

I always have the worst luck and end up doing the quests that don't lead you to companions and end up getting the companions last when all their skills are picked and I have almost no way to get their approval up at that point.

Knowing me I'd probably miss some existing entirely. I think they said you could miss them in the interview?

If you don't explore enough you can miss them, I believe. In the week before the game comes out I'll be gone to avoid spoilers, but I'll google where they are just before I go buy it.

I hope I can collect a few favorites early on; they said some areas would be harder to get to than others, and I hope that doesn't include places where you can get companions. Not being able to get someone until you're 3/4 of the way through the game because you need to level up enough first would suck.

for about the past 3 years, i really havent played a major game without a guide (i collect the collectors editions anyway).  and while im loading the game on to my xbox one's hard drive, i will be reading up on how to get all the companions as early as possible.  plus the only thing i really use the guides for is when i get stuck or if its something i might miss without prior knowledge

I'm in 2 mind about the companions. Part of me wants it all to be a new experience, so finding the companions will be a surprise. The other part wants to learn everything about them beforehand, so I can collect the ones I want in the order I want...

Uhm it was mentioned that most can be killed or told to go away, but you have to ****** them off for it to happen. Like in DAO where everyone could leave except for Alistair and Morrigan for obvious reasons.

As 90s Luke pointed out, you can finish the game with just the Inquisitor and one of the companions (although that will be extremely hard). That being said, why would I want that? Companions are probably the most important reason for me to play BioWare's games. So, even if companions are forced upon me, I wouldn't mind.

But I agree with the OP. Based on the material that I was able to live stream from E3, I think the Inquisition is an organisation - your organisation actually - and that the companions and advisers will be the heart of that said organisation.

I like to explore so I'm hopeful I won't miss any companions (I don't want spoilers before first playthrough). But I also don't mind if companions are forced upon me by the game. If I don't like them, then I just won't take them out.

I think what they are doing is showing you the potential inquisition if you choose to do all the quests relating to acquiring these characters, accept their offers to join, etc.  In your own particular story that may not happen.   For example, apparently Iron Bull is up front about still sending reports to the Qunari.   If you don't like this idea I presume you are either going to have to talk him out of it, kill him or simply let him leave.    May be it will be left open that you can find him if you change your mind, but may be not and you will have lost him for good.    So your Inquisition will not have Iron Bull.     That seems very much along the lines of previous games.   There are some characters in DA2, like Varric, who you can't reject as they are integral to the story.   There are others, like Fenris, who you will never even meet unless you do the dodgy quest for the dwarf.   I imagine it will be much like that in Inquisition.

Morrigan can actually leave once you are done with Lothering, she just can't be killed. She's going to show up at the end regardless though. Alistair cannot leave until the Landsmeet and that even with 100% negative affection, he is a warden, following you around his part of his job.

DAI seems to follow the same pattern, one companion cannot be killed or pissed off to force them to leave and I expect it to be Cassandra (Varric isn't going to be that character for a second game in a row).

I would like the option of picking who I want.  DA:O  I killed Zev a few times and had him join us a few times.  I liked the way it gave each of my Wardens a slightly different feel. I had at least one game where I sent Leliana away.  I don't mind a few being forced on us but I'll be quite happy if we have options for others.

I will always recruit everyone, if it's my first time through or my tenth time.  It's unlikely they will all survive to the end every time though.

I'm hoping companion recruiting is more DA2 than DA:O though, in DA2 it was rather straight forward, you couldn't miss any of them and you got all of them before the end of act 1.  In Origins, you could miss out on Wynne and Oghren for most of the game, Leliana and Sten could be easily skippedd(well I never missed them but some did)

I want to run into Iron Bull asap he seems like the archetype of my usual favourite BioWare characters(Black Whirlwind, Oghren, Wrex, Grunt etc)

There probably will be atleast one companion central to the plot like Alistair in DA:O. The rest you can probably say F U to. I intend to go solo on my first run so I'm keeping my eye on this part of the game too.

My greatest fear is not being able to find characters.

With Origins it was fine, I'd seen pretty much all the possible spoilers so I knew it all.

With DAII I'd been on media blackout and hadn't really known where to find the characters and a few hours in I had Aveline, Carver, Varric, Anders, and Isabela.  I was planning my course of events and figured Merrill would be part of The Long Way Home quest so I resolved to find Fenris first. By god that was annoying - I ended up checking the wiki (which was barely updated as it was the same day the game came out...).

So I'm freaking worried I'll miss someone.  Maybe I can find someone who'll IM me a spoiler free way of finding the companions, but I should be able to find them on my own as well, I just want certain ones soon so I can have my ideal party set up.

When I played Origins for the first time I completely missed Leliana and went through an entire game without her so I'm terrified of that happening again. I really hope it's not gonna be one of those situations where they're forever lost if you don't recruit them at a specific point in time (like two companions in Lothering which is never accessible again, or Fenris for example.)

I'd rather they show up fifteen minutes late with Starbucks than not at all.

I will do a playthrough recruiting all and using them all. I will also do a playthrough where I can end up with only one companion at the end of the game. I like that. Thats replay value for me.

Currently I plan on doing for my first playthrough is femquisitor(mage), Viv, Cassandra and Srea

I'm tempted to do a 'test' playthrough,  where I just learn the feel of the game, what the companion's personalities are like, where they're found etc. THEN I'll make my real characters, with their own personalities n' stuff, where I pick who I want, see who does/doesnt die, see romances etc.

But then I kinda want to stop looking at info after 'Cole' is announced (and maybe the available romances too), and then just start fresh... Agh, the indecisiveness!!!

In interview in E3 someone from devs said that we have to find our companions and that you can't finish the game only with one companion, other can leave you based on your decision or you can kick them ut. So it seems to me that only one of companions is forced to you. I will take everyone with me though, I always took everyone in previous games.
