who is cole?
The spirit guy from Asunder. Generally thought to be the tall blonde guy near the centre in the group picture.

Morrigan can actually leave once you are done with Lothering, she just can't be killed. She's going to show up at the end regardless though. Alistair cannot leave until the Landsmeet and that even with 100% negative affection, he is a warden, following you around his part of his job.
DAI seems to follow the same pattern, one companion cannot be killed or pissed off to force them to leave and I expect it to be Cassandra (Varric isn't going to be that character for a second game in a row).
Technically it wasn't just Varric... you always had one of the warrior companions with you at the end no matter what as well, this was generally Aveline unless you had managed to get a specific rep with her in comparison to Fenris in which case it was him. I think this was basically to ensure you had a warrior in the final fights in case you were a rogue or mage.
As for DAI, I am curious if this is a case of pissing or killing companions off or getting them to leave or something else. Like maybe the final mission is a bit akin to the Suicide Mission where you can maybe have it so the Inquisitor can come out of it alive with just one companion due to bad decisions along the way. I would much rather have it like either of those ideas than someone whom sticks with you due to plot armor or something like that

Going by some dev's comments in the last year and E3, I think the answer is pissing off, killing and just plain not recruiting them. I suspect there is one that is forced on you at the started of the game (Cassandra going by spoilers on the Inquisition creation). Everyone else is optional. Then through the game decisions will make some leave, others die in specific battles because of decisions you made, etc. We might even have a traitor (or more) among them.

The one impossible to ditch companion, I think, is Cassandra. It seems like she is the one to find our protag & would be the one to spearhead the idea of the Inquisition.
As for the other companions, I'm just concerned I'm going to run right past them since it's an open-world. DAO was linear yet I still missed Leliana because I didn't notice I could enter the tavern in Lothering.

Did you miss Sten too? Seeing as you could technically just walk by the cage he is in without interacting if you wanted.
But yeah got what you mean about Cassandra, didn't think of it that way. Was more thinking of ones that could potentially have 'plot armor' and again you are right, makes sense for her to be like that although considering the trailer has the bit where she states the Inquisitor is the only threat she sees. I imagine if you act like a dick and do stuff she wouldn't be happy with she might either leave or challenge our leadership.

there's a book in the lower right corner of the table, looks like the cover is a buff man but the face...is that...varric? nah...
though this brings up the question, whose book is this?

Latest character profile tell us that Vivienne throws a ball for the Inquisition, that is how we meet her.
I can already feel all the string attached to accepting the invitation...and also showing up there as a Qunari or Elf.

I'm going to asssume this happens early in the game (or at least CAN happen early). Since talk of being able to go to a ball, i've pondered about what our companions would look like. I don't quite see Iron Bull fitting in... lol

YES! I can't wait for that party hopefully I can go and recruit the more rough around the edges companions first before going to Vivienne's ball, my dwarf and qunari PCs I do not see putting their best foot forward for it ![]()

lol Neither can I so I hope I have an option to drag him with me to it. Should be fun, we'll get drunk while Vivienne is trying to get at whatever agenda she has.
Edit: I really really hope that I don't accidentally walk right past any party members again though like I did in DAO, though I'm all for the option of telling them to leave even though I hate loosing companions regardless of how I feel about them and will try to keep all of them around if possible. Also I'd hate to get one very late in the game but I don't think we'll have to worry about it for this.
