Ok, let me start by saying the following:

1) This is NOT a troll thread.

2) I understand that this was CONCEPT footage

However, I do have to call out something.

Here's a quote from Bioware in October of 2012 regarding the next Mass Effect game:

"So first, we don’t want to make...Mass Effect 4 with like, ‘...you’re a soldier in the universe’. So this will be a very, very different context for sure...".

Alright, so Bioware is done with the whole Soldier thing.  Check! Roger! Read you loud and clear!

...oops?

What are YOUR thoughts? I don't remember this scene from the previous games, nor do I think this is Shepard.

I think they meant you're not a random military that gets pushed for greatness.

Well, clearly that's not a soldier, that's a vanguard

I guess the only thing I would add is that we don't know if this is the main character.

Maybe they just wanted to show us something familiar to reemphasize the brand?

Its possible that the main character could be helping the Alliance on a  mission. The main character could be on a planet doing whatever and  happens to enounter someone who is N7. Maybe the main character is pursuing someone who is N7.

There's nothing that says the pic is the protagonist.

But even if it is the protagonist "SO BE IT"

Sorry. If we are Alliance soldiers... [And I say this despite despising the Alliance!] I can handle it.

I just want to play!

As I said in my predictions thread, I very much doubt we will be locked to humans alone.

There's also no guarantee that this is, in fact, for Mass Effect 4.

Also: This wasn't "concept footage" for one game. This was a sizzle reel showcasing concepts they're working on.

Remember how they ended by talking about "This is a shot from our new IP"?

This image is making me look forward to the armor designs of the next game. Man I can't wait to see what the new weapons and biotic powers are like, particularly the Vanguard's.

I'm fine with the protagonist of every Mass Effect game being a Marine. Although I'm open to other backgrounds as well (pirate, for example), I liked the military atmosphere of the first and third games.

All depends on what N7 would mean following the Reaper war.

Considering the devastation, I'd be surprised if the Systems Alliance was still considered entirely human. A Human-Turian-Batarian-Volus-Other conglomerate would be entirely possible.

And as for N7, condering the the MP's N7 special forces are pretty much a bunch of volunteers that went on suicide missions during the reaper war just to harass the enmy, I wouldn't be surprised if they were also pretty diverse due to precedent.

  • It's not defined as the protagonist.
  • N7 armor can be doned by a number of characters, as it's the special forces of the Alliance.
  • It could have been looted off of a dead marine.
  • I don't think we will be set to one race.
  • It's a concept clip.
  • My back hurts.
  • I want a beer.

All legitimate reason that it's not another Shepard scenario.

OH... It could be Conrad Verner....

This could be just an armor suit that the MC could use, the MC might not even be a marine at all.

Still, the OP raises a valid point. If their objective is to move on and leave Shepard behind, and the first thing anyone thinks of when they see the N7 logo is Shepard, then why do you suppose they chose to highlight, as one of the very first images from ME4 released to the public, a human in N7 armor? At least if the face were visible you might be able to say that it isn't a default Shepard, but I think it's a safe bet that many people seeing that image (who aren't active or lurking members of the BSN) will assume that the image is Shepard, back in the fight.

I'm sure the image was carefully selected for a particular reason, but it seems peculiar from where I'm sitting.

Probably has something to do with what N7 becomes (long?) after the Reaper war, since it took on some pretty different attributes during.

Also, more than Shepard the character, N7 has come to signify the breadth of Mass Effect fandom.

It'll become clear with time, I'm sure.

I think if they're moving on from Shepard, then the most the N7 symbol can be is some symbol adopted because of Shepard. Wanting to move on is not creating some new N7 character who is not her/him. The Mass Effect universe is so much more than an elite branch in the Alliance military and any attempt to create a default solider character with a new trilogy just dooms the new series off the bat. But any soldier N7 character would be Shepard 'Lite' 2.0.

This is a damned interesting point. Never considered that. But yeah, going forward what would it mean to be an "N7"? Could be like Rangers, (think more Babylon 5 then US military) trailblazing their way into uncharted galaxy space part archaeologist part soldier.
Well played.

On one hand, that doesn't have to be a shot of the MC.  I've been trying to avoid news on DA:I so the game is new to me when I buy it, but isn't the MC character not a Grey Warden, but one of your party is?

On the other hand, there were those reported feedback meetings where fans were asked what N7 meant to them, which implies they want N7 to be an important part of the new series.

On the other other hand (are we back to the first hand???) it might be as dreamgazer implies, and N7 has taken on a new meaning beyond being a military designation (remember how Legion took part of Shepard's armour, and the suggestion that it was something more than fixing damage?)

The N7 could just be there to say "hey it still mass effect" or any of the other reason listed here.

I just better not be forced to play as another beech-boy for the Alliance. I HATE the Alliance crap, with that Hackett moron constantly hassling me over the comm.

If I made my own ME movie with myself as Shepard, I'd tell Hackett to ef off every chance I got, especially during & after the events of ME2.
