See, I would feel a lot more reassured by that if I knew what he meant about 'particular group'. Does he mean every combination of race, gender and orientation has options, or does he only mean that no particular race is favoured? There could be four options for dwarves in total, but if three of them are female that's not much good to my Inquisitor.

*holds you*

Don't. Worry. About. It.

Its going to be okay. Have faith.

Or, just get it for PC and wait a few months, and be able to romance Tony Stark, Barack Obama, Batman, or Dr. Seuss once the mods start pouring out.

I'm just going to fret until we hear something more concrete. I want to believe it will be OK!

(And if what we hear is 'Varric is an option for female dwarves' my concerns will magically disappear. Hell, if what we hear is 'we have scrapped all other romance options to bring you MOAR VARRIC' I would probably be OK with that ...)

Oh, the fabled Varric romance. How the forums would rejoice. I wouldn't romance him, but I'd be happy for the Varric-romance-fanboys/fangirls.

It adds importance, variance, and thus substance to player choice. By choosing specific options, you have certain things available to you, and other things locked off. That way, you're influenced to make new choices you wouldn't usually make to experience new content, whether that be playing a character as a different gender than you're used to, romancing a different character, going to a different place, etc etc

As for "past characters being violently ripped from our hands" if you're referring to the playable characters(Warden, Hawke, Inquisitor), it was advertised many years ago that each Dragon Age title would have a different playable protagonist. That hasn't changed, and isn't likely to change ever.

I suppose "choice" wasn't the term I meant to get across. More like "emotional investment" - that two games worth of content is being taken out of our hands with the specific notion of "These aren't YOUR characters" being enforced, and that you don't get to fully emotionally invest in a given character unless you specifically tailor that character to how the game wants you to play.

By "particular group" I mean "in real life."

Worrying about the distribution between male and female players, and one of them feeling like content geared at them was an afterthought, I am fine with. Worrying about a distribution amongst sexualities, and making it so that gay or bisexual players don't feel they won't have choices, I am also fine with. Worrying about "players who like playing dwarves" or "players who like playing humans" or whatever other races, that I'm not as concerned about. Which is why I'm saying you will have options, but you may not have the same number of options depending on what race you select.

It's fine if someone doesn't like that idea. Some folks, we're quite aware, aren't happy that romances are being gated at all and would prefer to have all romances available to all PC's. I would suggest not panicking just yet, as not all romances are even race-gated and the options have not all suddenly dried up as someone might fear, but I suppose until and unless they learn otherwise they can justifiably choose to be pessimistic. Maybe we'll put up the chart (yes, there's actually a chart) at some point, and having said information will make you feel better before you play the game, but that's not really my decision.

Man, the fact that a chart exists to explain all the gated romances is hilarious.

I think it'd be awesome if fans made a chart. Like, we communicated with each other, playing our different playthroughs, and together put out the appropriate information to help our peers understand who's romanceable under what parameters.

Bioware is racially intolerant to fictional groups, spread the word.

Yes, and that means a goodly amount of people who like knowing what their getting into will be waiting 6 mos-1 year before buying the game. So I would not enjoy that in the least.

It's long enough I wouldn't be able to get the Collector's edition, which I'd been quite looking forward to. Just not enough that I'm going in blind regarding choices for what I consider story content (and story content is the appeal of Bioware games).

Reiterating the above comments, thanks for elaborating on that. I might find the chart handy after the game comes out for replaying purposes. As far as gate-ing content, it'll likely be viewed as a significant change of pace for BioWare's recent games, but locking content based on gender/race/whatever is hardly unheard of - played enough Troika/BIS games to be familiar with that.

Considering how much information leaked out with Dragon Age 2 like two weeks before release, I'm guessing even if the devs don't release that info, the people who get it ahead of time will!  I spoiled the entire game for myself for DA II, saw all the playthroughs as they were happening, knew the romances, the quests, the bosses, everything.

Yeah, I'd rather "the chart" if it ever does get released, get released post-launch.

Give players the chance to figure things out for themselves and make these decisions count.

So if I play a certain way and this character I want to romance is unavailable, I can go, "Damn, well how do I romance him/her?"

*chart*

Oooooooh

*back in the game*

Or I could just go in with no compass and figure it out the hard way, hahaha

Getting the most out of this game. I didn't do that in DA2 but I hope to do it here. Though I understand the appeal for those who want it early.

If anything, it could be released pre-launch of the game and I(along with others like me) can try to avoid it.

That sounds like a good course of action.

I'm just trying to play it safe. :P

Two weeks still seems late for CE availability, tho? Granted, this is my first CE that I'm going to be getting, so I'm not entirely knowledgeable about it. I hate to say 'PREORDER CANCELLED' since that's sort of the mocking response to any controversy, but I preordered it already out of paranoia and I'm not sure when they're going to charge me (as they haven't yet) but I'm also not spending $200 on a game I'm disappointed in. Not being able to keep up my nice canon race rotation (origins was elf, 2 was obvsly human, so this game is all dwarf/qunari) for the sake of getting more story content would qualify it as a disappointing game.

TBH generally in the fantasy genre I'm sick to death of humans and elves. City elves are something of a miraculous exception for me.

They'll charge you when the game ships(online) or in-store when you pick it up or pay it off(of course).
