Edit: Also I really rather people like Varric with clear preferences for dwarven women be companions who get their own LIs outside the player. 4 bi LIs and companions with various preferences outside of that hook up with people tat are not the PC. I much rather that than having 7 or 8 Lis that will date various versions of the Inquisitor.

Varric/Bianca reunion is now a go :P

And, in this situation, some racial bias makes sense- never okay, but I can understand it.

Yep, I agree. I don't think it's okay, but I can see their side of it.

How well has that worked on Earth so far? We've made progress, but even with more time, we're pretty damn behind. And, in this situation, some racial bias makes sense- never okay, but I can understand it.

I don't play video games to experience discrimination on stupid things like appearance. If I wanted people judging me on my appearance, I'd go outside.

It has nothing to do with appearance. It's not personal.

"Appearance" is a little less than "being four feet taller and having horns."

This is the issue here. People project themselves onto characters. That defeats the whole purpose of a *character*.

Go play the Sims if you want to play your life, beliefs, and perception.

Yeeeesss.

Having companions with actual love lives and families that didn't evolve around the PC would be awesome. Maybe they want the PC to help them pick out a gift (and this can potentially go horribly wrong) or write a poem, or figure out an awkward turtle way to purpose. I loved Aveline's quest with Donnic. I'd love more stuff like that.

Maybe if worst comes to worse and the PC and the NPC comes to blows the PC has to go explain to his/her spouse what happened with the choice to lie or be honest. Stuff like that would mean much more to me than additional romances.

It's personal to me, darn it. I spend enough of my life being judged and discriminated based on something I had no control over like my appearance. I don't want to experience that same crap in video games. I use them to escape this pustule of a planet we call Earth.

I'm out. Go talk about whatever the frak you want to.

I'd be happy as hell if Varric and Bianca Bianca was reunited.

And then Varric introduced Bianca Bianca to Bianca and there was a scuffle between who got his affections

I'm sorry if that sounds rude, but again, don't blame Bioware for choosing to design something in a certain way.  It's their project.

I'm left handed and can't wield any main weapon in my left hand in most RPGS.  Like deuces gaming world.

Maybe the Iron Bull is stat-based. You have to meet either a strength, willpower, or cunning check to ride the bull.

Look, I'm just saying: I wouldn't blame people for not wanting to **** a grey-skinned, horned giant. Or a four foot tall stocky bearded person.

And I don't blame people for not wanting to **** me, a 5'2 blond man.

People have preferences. It's a thing that happens.

But that's not the reason these race-gates exist. The reason is purely technical.

But having them be open-minded individuals who don't care what race you are but the person inside is going too far?

It's really not that simple. To stick with the Varric example, it's not close-minded of him to look at a Qunari and have flashbacks of Qunari murdering innocents in the streets. In that case it's reactionary: he can't choose to not have bad memories of Qunari. But let's say that you can change Varric's mind about Qunari and yourself in particular as a Qunari. Why does this then mandate he's available?

No one is a dwarf or Qunari in real life. They don't need their rights protected or their preferences represented equally. As was suggested earlier, 2 romances is plenty per race/gender/sexuality combo. Any more and I really do get the sense people want a dating simulator.

Edit: Errr, a Dragon Age dwarf, I meant....

So race gating is an actual thing. No one answered me ( :() but the Gaider quote seems to indicate it probably will be.

I guess I can respect that, kinda like FTL how having different races on your ship opened up different options. Makes that game feel more alive and reactive. Though I can understand, people don't like being denied their husbandos and waifus for a kinda shallow reason like race.

Remember when this thread used to be about DA and ME converging to create a multiverse of banging, Duncan's taint, dubstep and having sex with the inky blackness of space itself?

Good times.

That's the problem though, no one is judging *you* because of your looks in Dragon Age.

I've been judged because of my looks plenty of times and this change is completely fine with me because I know it's not a personal thing. It's not me in that screen, but my original character. You want to take away character preferences because of real life experiences? It's two totally different things.

I just cannot agree that everyone HAS to love/sex us because we want them and we're the Inquisitor so we ultimately get what we want. It's not at all fair to the companions, it's not fair to the writers.

Because it's not as many blocks as possible, firstly. Secondly, for some having a degree of verisimilitude enhances the experience by making one feel like they are part of an independent world, full of diverse people each with their own preferences, histories, and backgrounds.

You're right.  The flags could be more restrictive.

Country of PC's origin?  They could add that.  It would make sense that a Ferelden might not be attracted to an Orlesian.  The two countries hate each other, so romances between folks from those countries are pretty rare these days.

Before anyone says, "Well, not all Orlesians are like that," I'd say for example that not all elves hate humans or find them unattractive.

Hair color and eye color?  Sure, let's add that in.  After in, in real life, people have preferences and I've seen hair color as well as eye color as one of the first things people comment on for their preferences.

Age?  That comes up a lot.

...Action as a flag?  Not even a mention.  One of the most important aspects to a person, their personality and their actions as people, is currently not one of those gates.

So that's why I think the racial gating for the reason of "well, everyone has preferences," is a little thin.  By the devs' own admission, our companions in these games are already exceptions to the rule.

I'll do you guys a huge favor and just hang back for awhile.  I've been getting more and more frustrated and I don't want to be a killjoy.  I apologize for that, just wanted to get it off of my chest.  Thank you for not flaming me.   :)

@Mukora Thanks, I'll go dig it up.

YES. There's plenty of good storytelling possibilities with that and unlike additional romance content you wouldn't be locked into only experience a couple at best per playthrough. That and it fulfills the companions with their own preferences and such far better than them wanting the PC to me. It feels more organic as well the whole everyone in the party is conveniently single thing never did settle well with me. Particularly since we're now having NPC romances and such.

Also I will laugh hard if there's a "Hi Bianca say hi to Bianca, oooh don't be jealous I knew her first!"

"You mess with the Bull you get the horns" taken to a whole other level. He doesn't even turn you down- the whole thing just "GAME OVER"s.
