YES. There's plenty of good storytelling possibilities with that and unlike additional romance content you wouldn't be locked into only experience a couple at best per playthrough. That and it fulfills the companions with their own preferences and such far better than them wanting the PC to me. It feels more organic as well the whole everyone in the party is conveniently single thing never did settle well with me. Particularly since we're now having NPC romances and such.

 

Also I will laugh hard if there's a "Hi Bianca say hi to Bianca, oooh don't be jealous I knew her first!"

You're right.  The flags could be more restrictive.

 

Country of PC's origin?  They could add that.  It would make sense that a Ferelden might not be attracted to an Orlesian.  The two countries hate each other, so romances between folks from those countries are pretty rare these days.  

 

Before anyone says, "Well, not all Orlesians are like that," I'd say for example that not all elves hate humans or find them unattractive.  

 

Hair color and eye color?  Sure, let's add that in.  After in, in real life, people have preferences and I've seen hair color as well as eye color as one of the first things people comment on for their preferences.

 

Age?  That comes up a lot.

 

...Action as a flag?  Not even a mention.  One of the most important aspects to a person, their personality and their actions as people, is currently not one of those gates.

 

So that's why I think the racial gating for the reason of "well, everyone has preferences," is a little thin.  By the devs' own admission, our companions in these games are already exceptions to the rule.

Personally, I sincerely doubt your actions won't be a factor in some way. They kinda were in origins, Leliana definitely would not romance a Warden who murdered every person they met, for example.

 

And they almost went a bit farther in DAII: Fenris, for example, won't romance a Hawke who keeps Orana as a slave, and Sebastian won't romance a Hawke who flirts with everyone they meet. Anders romancing a Hawke who fully supported the Templars was odd, though...

 

So long as we can't just pelt the companions who strongly disagree with us with shiny gifts, I think your actions will definitely play a major factor in your chances to romance someone.

I think it's important that you keep stating your preference. I think it's an interesting debate that reflects the different ways people approach video games.

 

But to your examples: I would 100% be on board with a Ferelden not being able to romance an Orlesian because the Ferelden was, say, kidnapped and tortured by a band of Orlesian soldiers. I think your other examples were jokes, but if they weren't then I'm not sure how eye color gating adds to the story.

 

As for actions as a flag: I think that is a given this game, and I think it is indeed very important.

It hasn't been mentioned so far about whether or not that's going to affect a player's romance this time. And it wasn't a factor in previous DA games, unless it was something huge.  Be a total evil jerk to everyone you meet?  Just fine by Leliana.  Defile the ashes?  Big mistake.   Anything you did in DA2?  Nada, though that's probably a bi-product of the rushed development cycle

 

That's what I was getting at. 

 

 

I hope she's bi.  It would be nice to have a warrior lady that doesn't just bat for one team.

Positive. I did my Danarius lite playthrough and Fenris mance was part of it. (He was a psycho aggressive Bloodmage who supported slavery and was an all around manipulative and cruel bastard. I hc'd Fenris was pretty unhealthly attached to him and made him a Danarius replacement without realizing it and put the chains around himself. It was pretty creepy how well it fit).

 

Not if you were smart enough to leave her at camp during the baby killing (or persuade to minimize the hits then sweet talk her). You won't finish her romance til near the landsmeet that way I'll admit but it will get done.

I appreciate the compliment.  It's going to be much like the set sexualities thing for me, I'm sure.  The news is recent, so it feels fresh and kinda painful.  In a few days I'll mellow some.  Then I'm sure that DG or another member of the DA team is going to clarify things further, in a mostly non-snarky way (wouldn't be them without a little snark,) and help put me at ease.  Within a week or two I'll be over it, knowing me.  

 

For tonight...probably best I stay out of romance threads until I mellow some.  For the sake of the other folks that love the DA games as much as I do.

It was still possible however (and yeah though gift spam you could probably squeak by with several harsh options because persuade usually makes the losses minimal). I'll replay my hardened Leliana jerkwad Cousland lady. I finished the nice one recently.

 

Also being able to intimidate her into stepping down at the urn of sacred ashes (if hardened) and suck face with her after her "i'll never forgive you tangent" (that had her lose a whooping 10 approval) was the devs intent no?
