Wait, in the 2/2/2 system, don't straight and gay characters of each gender get two choices? Male characters with a male romance get the bisexual and gay option, female characters with a male romance get the bisexual and straight option etc and bisexuals have three options?

I was reading some posts in this thread and was trying to understand some of the comments about gay and lesbian characters having less. I know 2/2/2 isn't confirmed but it's the assumption most are working off of, right? Especially with the recent romance comments and Sera confirmation.

Dragon Age @dragonage

We've only officially announced Cullen, Sera, and Cassandra as possible romances. Stay tuned for more updates.

Does anyone want to estimate who will be announced next as a romance? I think it will be Dorian, probably as a gay love interest.

I'm actually thinking the Iron Bull will be confirmed not only as a bisexual LI, but they'll also announce that he's race-gated and by which.

This race-gating thing has my mind all in knots, because I'm thinking not only in terms of gender-gating now. Like, I expect all bisexual LI to be race-gated to some extent, because of the amount of scenes that can cut down on. Yet, I'm sure all the human female LI will be open to human male Inquisitors. On the male LI side, my brain short-circuits because of all the variation that can occur. You can actually have two straight, two bisexual, and two gay male characters, each complementing on race-gating. It boggles my mind.

The fun kind of boggling, mind you. I could sit here for hours trying out different systems.

I think its because of the race-gating.  If I choose to play as a gay qunari or gay dwarf, since I'm playing as two "minorities", it's more likely that I'll lose one of my choices because of the artificial gating.

As opposed to real gating?

Hmm. I don't see that happening to knock a choice below parity but maybe.

Sorry, I should have said, "arbitrary gating".  That's what I actually meant.

Ahh okay, was confused.

But I wouldn't call it arbitrary either. I'd just call it gating if I were gonna use that term for it.

I have a feeling Cullen will be bisexual, and Cassandra will be heterosexual. Although, I still have a remnant of hope that she will be available for women too. If not, the other gals and I who like Cassandra will have to find a way to make do without her.

I would be interested in knowing what race cannot romance Iron Bull. I think it would be dwarves, since that would be the most difficult to implement from a technical standpoint, I believe. I don't see why Iron Bull wouldn't romance dwarves or get it on with them or whatever, simply because he doesn't seem like the type to limit himself.

It's all a bit complicated, I suppose. I only wish abundant amount of scenes weren't such a problem to add; there would probably be less restrictions.

I'm thinking that dwarves definitely, and probably elves as well. That still leaves eight scenes for the animators to do, the same as a monosexual, ungated LI would have. (Which I believe is how it'll go--straight and gay LI won't be gated, for the most part. With there being more male characters, I could see some gating going on to add in more of them as LI's.)

If it were easier, we could have all the variety and options we coudld dream of. Alas, it isn't, and if I had the choice between all ungated LI's with far less of them, or gated LI with more variety, I'd choose variety every time.

I wonder whether it will state why Iron Bull would not engage in a romance with dwarves or elves, for him as a character. I do not see a reason to this, other than the technical aspect. And yeah, I think the bisexual LIs will be gated a lot of the time, and there might be very gated romance options, like Varric only romancing female dwarves.

Sure, I know, I'm just having my wishful thoughts. And you're right about that, since I would also choose variety.

Yeah, but it's a weak argument against dwarves.  They are known specifically for not being easily breakable.

Don't take it so literally. It could just as easily mean the guy doesn't prefer smaller framed folk in comparison to him.

This is not exactly how the conversation went. but close enough.

Cassandra: The champion defeated the arishok in single combat?  It just sounds so.. romantic.

Varric:  Why I think you developed a case of hero worship, seeker.

Cassandra: Why?  Because I have respect for a woman that builds herself from nothing?

Varric: Riiight.

so!  Hints? Hints?

Yep. From the sound of it, Iron Bull likes it rough, so it'd be hard to explain the elf with a broken pelvis. She was like that when I got there?

And this is what romance threads do to my brain. I should go.

Funny enough, was thinking and am still considering rolling a female elven Inquisitor. hahaha

They said that races will have less romance companions. SO I worry about my Fem!Qunari Champion/Sera pairing.

To be perfectly clear so you don't get the wrong idea-

By "particular group" I mean "in real life."

Worrying about the distribution between male and female players, and one of them feeling like content geared at them was an afterthought, I am fine with. Worrying about a distribution amongst sexualities, and making it so that gay or bisexual players don't feel they won't have choices, I am also fine with. Worrying about "players who like playing dwarves" or "players who like playing humans" or whatever other races, that I'm not as concerned about. Which is why I'm saying you will have options, but you may not have the same number of options depending on what race you select.

It's fine if someone doesn't like that idea. Some folks, we're quite aware, aren't happy that romances are being gated at all and would prefer to have all romances available to all PC's. I would suggest not panicking just yet, as not all romances are even race-gated and the options have not all suddenly dried up as someone might fear, but I suppose until and unless they learn otherwise they can justifiably choose to be pessimistic. Maybe we'll put up the chart (yes, there's actually a chart) at some point, and having said information will make you feel better before you play the game, but that's not really my decision.

realistic interpretations of fictional characters in order to add another dimension to the character, and therefore add some depth to the experience of romancing them.
