Mae's confirmed not be showing up in this game, as she became a character too late to be implemented. However, the fans like her, the writers like her, and she's interesting. So I have high hopes for the next game, considering they're on a five-game contract or something (so I hear).

She's more realistic than most portrayals in the media, as well being compelling.

Was she confirmed as not appearing at all or just not being a companion?

Because I heard the latter.

It'd be cool if she showed up, but it'd also be cool if they made some more trans characters.

I thought it was at all, but I could be wrong. Plus, there's always DLC.

More trans characters are always good, but I think maybe they should probably introduce the one they've got to the entire fanbase first? Unless we introduce her and a new person in the same game, so's the inevitable hate will get split. Divide and conquer, so to speak.

It's depressing that we even need to consider such strategies.

It is indeed.

She's a Tevinter Magister from the comics. She's the widow of one of Varric's cousins.

Maevaris is awesome. Who knows, maybe she'll show up in a later game.

I've heard just not as a companion but I don't think she'd be in the core game, not this late in sadly.

Hopefully a DLC.

Iron Bull confirmed as a romance. No specifics beyond that.

It's just weird to hear all this about LGBT rep when its just B with an admittedly bad rep of T in the last game.

Now though, we're seeing LGBT rep in full. Well, if Maevaris shows up, or someone else who's transgender. Glad she was done right, according to transgender individuals who commented on her. I have yet to hear/read anything negative about her that wasn't obvious hate for the sake of it.

The representation also applies to the player character.

If you have 4 romanceable characters, yes they are all bisexual, but the player character can be bisexual, straight, or gay.  And no matter which one they choose, they will still have choice.

In terms of other forms of representation we can still use non-romanceable characters for that representation too.

I think once upon a time Mike made a comment about 5 dragon ages or whatever, but we're not on an X game contract.  We can stop doing Dragon Age after DAI, or if we feel like we can keep doing interesting things and the franchise is successful, continue making more.

My concern with the inclusion of trans characters is how does one tastefully show that a character is trans? The only way we realize that Mae is trans is because we see her chest, correct?

You could also kind of tell just by looking at her figure.

I imagine if she showed up in the game she'd use the "male human" body-type.

Oh. I couldn't tell. And I haven't read the comics, so I'm just daft.

But that makes sense.

They could always word-of-god it, or just have someone who's upfront about it, or probably a thousand things. The thing to do would get someone who is trans to consult on it, preferably of the same gender since trans people of different genders have vastly different experiences (as do cis men and women, but some thing are often amplified).

It wasn't obvious, though. She definitely looked feminine. But from certain angles, it was clear.

That'd be a bit insensitive, considering there've already been complaints about the dimorphism between presumed-cis PCs being too strong. Less so if the character were some form of genderqueer, but if it's Mae it would come off as just the 'man-in-a-dress' stereotype.

I agree, actually. It's an option I hope they would not take, but it's also the most likely one, sadly.
