Well, firstly, it was kind of a joke. And secondly, games sometimes bring people back from the dead. ;)

The Dragon Age universe does say that no magic can bring people back from the dead however (although that could just be that it hasn't been discovered yet).

Possibly more likely, though, is that if you "killed" Ser Cauthrien at the Landsmeet, she may just have been knocked unconscious and nursed back to health later.

This is exactly what I meant. An apparent 'death', not a real one. We were deceived into thinking she died. Just like when our companions fall down 'dead' and they even use a little corpse icon. Her body on the floor is not evidence. If I haven't seen a funeral (and even then I'm dubious) or an ingame statement that a character really is dead, then they're only provisionally dead until I can get actual proof.

Edit: This is not to say that I really believe it will be her. Just that it's as good a guess as any - and I really like the symmetry of it - and wouldn't she be absolutely kick-ass. In actual fact I have not a clue who it really is. And neither does anyone else as yet. Trailers are often deliberately deceptive, in order to hype up the paying customer.

Pretty sure it's already been stated that we will not get to choose who.

I myself am getting a bit tired of the threads, not because of the topic, but because it's all the same. A large group are convinced it's Oghren and there is no reasoning with them, some will say we don't know, then it just becomes plain off the wall stuff.

I do not know who it will be, but at this point I don't much care anymore after almost 3 months of anticipation no matter who it is a billion threads will pop up complaining about it.

I hope for Leliana personally, but I won't hold my breath.

As playable then I wouldn't have a clue other than maybe your old self.

As appearances of old ones for non-playable then I would say Duncan since they didn't find his body and he's narrating the story.

But yeah, if they really wanted to save money on hiring voice actors, Dog's just sound effects, lol. Just sayin' is all ;x

Actually Dog is voiced by a real dog, or so I read when I was doing research on the voice actors.
I doubt that. Now wouldn't that just be plain cruel... if they had to make the "real dog" do the angry growls / sad whine noises?  <_<
Not to mention the sounds he makes when he gets hurt in combat.
They could probably get an actor dog to do it without cruelty, but it would be cruel to the players. I have enough trouble with the whimpers from the wolves and enemy Mabari. I wish games didn't always make me kill canines. ;)
I wish I didn't have to kill humans in games.  But they sometimes want to kill me.

I only wish the canines, humans, and dark spawn could her my whimper.

Doesn't it pretty much have to be Oghren? He's the only party member other than Morrigan who can't be killed by any action or inaction on the player's part. If they truly want to let any possible ending continue into this expansion, the only possible NPC they could carry forward is him. As countless other threads have argued, everyone has their unique ending that they want to be validated in future xpac/games, so we'll be forced to live with Oghren.

No it doesn't have to be, because it doesn't have to even be an old party member. It could be Bann Teagan for all we know. Just says "old favorite", and given what i've heard about RTO it could even be Duncan

perhaps it could be anyone, cause you killed a character doesnt rule out them returning as they could say that you thought you killed him/her but were only wounded, and the after watching the trailer it shows alistar and possibly orgren but ask why would bioware show that trailer and keep the retuning character a secret if its orgren thats the suprise spoiled, and alot of people suspect the dwarf to be orgren but what if it is the main character? made by a orgren fan of bioware as its very easy to copy him

Mehhh, things always change. Yeah, that looks a bit like Oghren in the trailer. But hey, in the CG trailers for DA:O we saw Leliana, Morrigan and Sten, right? But, by the time we actually got to play, they looked nothing like they did in the trailers.

So, it might be Oghren. It might not. Frankly, all the people basing it off of that also need to admit then that "OH GOD YOU CAN HEAR ALISTAIR AND HE POPS UP IN THE TRAILER", so it might be him, too.

Or, Bioware might throw us a wildcard.

If they are keeping it so quiet, it's almost obvious it is not Oghren, as much as I'd like him to be in the expansion. But strictly speaking, Alistair has a mega-armor with special looks. The clone of Oghren has the Legion of the Dead armor, previously present in the original game (as well as the PC has Ageless from the original game, like in the trailers of the game).
Strictly speaking, the possibilities I see are :
Alistair, Oghren, Zevran, Dog. The others get quite far away. Wynne with Shale in Tevinter I think, Leliana some expeditions for the Urn, Morrigan puff, Sten back home. Also note : an old favorite might not mean someone from the party.

Edit : I just wanted to note : I zoomed the screenshot of the expansion, the one with that... stormy dragon. Maybe it's just me, but that dual wielder could be Zevran. Still, in the same screenshot, you can notice the legs of a dwarf (mid battle) as well as the body of the standard BioWare human noble warrior. Will post a screenshot.

Here it is :

i fail to see how anyone outside the party could be a favourite, you wont be around them long enough to become a favourite unless its Duncan who you see and hear in every story

Maybe the "old favorite" is sarcasm. Maybe it's Anora. There may be a reason she is unkillable after all. :P

It's already been said Alistair is king in the expansion (even if you didn't make him one or you killed him off etc.)

I doubt he would be allowed to risk his life in other than a mission or two with the grey wardens if any at all.
It does indeed look like Oghren in the trailer but in all of my playthrough's he was off having babies...but I guess they can pick and choose whatever cannon ending they want like they have in other games.

***end spoilers***

Not that I'm complaining, a smaller expansion couldn't possibly house all the choices one could make for a reasonable cost so npc's get cut. But I will miss Zevy if he's gone too.

If you killed Alistair than he won't be in the expansion pack just like if you sacrificed yourself you end up playing as a new warden.

This may be what occurs here, but it's not necessarily true. He's a medieval king, not the president. Different rules apply and he can basically do what he wants. He was king when he went off to fight the archdemon (although uncrowned), and nothing is more dangerous than that.

In one of the playthroughs at the end it does say that Alistair was called to go to Orlais; Now this could be because they want to know how both wardens stayed alive or it could have something to do with the new expansion... Since Alistar would be the senior Grey Warden for Ferelden (he's been a Warden longer then pc so he'd be senior) with Riordan n Duncan both passing on, n the darkspawn aren't going bk to their hidey holes... I would guess that with the new expansion coming out that he'd have a say in whatever's being planned n consider he is the one that's most recently dealt with the Darkspawn n the archdemon then any other warden besides your pc so he'd have useful/recent information.

You know I really don't think it makes sense for it to be any of the previous companions besides Alistair, unless they mean somebody other than him. LOL. All your other companions seem to get wrapped up at the end of origins, meaning they moved on. It would be neat to see the ones who stuck around again. Of course I killed off my most recent hero so.... heh. In my last playthrough it did mention Oghren stuck around too so I guess it could be him.

Only one returning character?

Sigh.

Do BioWare not understand that in sequels we want to continue our adventures with the characters we grew to love in the first game?

Oh well at least the DA:O team never claimed to be a continuous story over multiple games in the first place.

I don't know ... at the end of my game I'm pretty sure Alistair's story got wrapped up -  he's dead!

Whereas Leliana for example stays with me, so it would be only logical that a continuing story of my character would involve her.

Morri is with child.

Ogran went off to a family life, which he might get bored with.

Alister is King and has no reason to leave his Kingdom for extended adventuring, even if he was allowed to by his advisers.

Zeveran is often dead, especially by toons played of killing first and asking questions later.

The old bat and Shale went off to resotre Shale to Dwarfdom. The biddy is probably dead (good riddance to her preachiness) but Shale could have returned, successful or not.

Dog is Dog and could always be around but I woud hardly consider a generic pet as a 'favorite character.' Anyway aren't the Hounds Fereldan?

Sten returns home and with his new ideas from his association with the party he would either be in the process of reeducation or leading a social revolution, or perhaps exiled.

Lilliana ends with "stays with main character at least for awhile" more often than not in the epilogue. If she doesn't stick around she continues her adventures solo.

My bet is that Lilliana best fits the continuity of an expansion. And most players like the hot red-head it seems. Plus they could give her a new song.

Depends on what playthrough u did.  Not all the endings are the same n there are a lot of people out here who have more than 1 ending, who have played the male n female playthroughs, elven, human noble, human mage n the dwarf origins...

I won't try n guess who the returning character is there are soooooo many possibilities from people that you meet to yes it could be 1 of your party members but who's to say...
lol since people all guessing here why not put the archdemon in lmao I know but seriously it could be anyone...
Me myself n I am just glad that an expansion is being made... I love this game n the more thats added on the more that it's gonna make it even funner to play n the more hooked I'm gonna be.

Can you back this up with a link or a quote from someone at Bioware? I haven't seen anything official that indicates this as yet.

This is all just one ending, and mostly stuff I've never gotten, myself. We need to remember that writers can work around pretty much anything except visible, onscreen death. Even then, they can work around it.

Dog isn't a 'generic' pet! He's...Dog, and  a very awesome fellow. ;) I love my dog....  About Mabari hounds being Fereldan, well, maybe, but the expansion still takes place in Fereldan, on the northern coast. It's about recruiting new Fereldan wardens and battling a new threat.
