If I am incorrect, which I 99% most probably am, please disregard. But I just came across something rather interesting.

I hope everyone has gone and watched the 20 minute demo they put out today. It's right here on the forums for your convenience. It looks fantastic, I absolutely can't wait for the game.

When watching the demo...pay attention to 9:50-9:53. Sera's bloody corpse thrown across the room? She looks pretty dead to me...sheesh what a way to go. In a demo, no less.

I don't know whether this is Sera specific, or if any companion is subject to this at that scene, or if she's actually dead and not just knocked out. Definitely surprised me, had to rewatch it a few times to be sure. That's definitely her.

The way I see this is the result of either two things: Bioware dun goofed and accidentally revealed a spoiler, or they used Sera's character model to show an NPC killed by some demons (similar to what they did with Major Coats in Mass Effect 3 at the end). Either way, it's a fail.

Thoughts?

EDIT: My good man SerCambria358 brought up the idea that this scene possibly takes place in the Fade, where a death in the Fade is not lethal in reality. Definitely a viable explanation.

  • 'Killing' a mortal's dreaming form while in the Fade (thus ending that individual's dream and waking them up) is a shock to the living body, but not normally lethal. However, Dreamer mages have been known to be able to kill others in their dreams, and if an individual is "awake" in the Fade death there can potentially lead to physical death.

I thought so at first, but I rewatched it a bunch of times and she looked COMPLETELY lifeless as she dropped. I really don't know.

I am not going to believe that bioware would kill off a companion in a demo, but we'll see in October.

Yeah I was baffled, like "did they really just do that? was that an accident to reveal?".

I hope I'm wrong, I really do.

I'm wondering if maybe we might see a non-mage become Tranquil because of it, if it is indeed in the fade. Considering how you had to Tranquil Feynriel, it seems like a possibility. Add in the recent revelations about reversing said Tranquility, and it might make for an interesting (if deeply disturbing) plotline.

Gaider stated in the twitter thread that the scene will make much more sense when playing the game. Regardless of Sera's (and IB's) status dead/knocked out , and the possibility of lacking info from before that quest or after that quest, it seems intentional.
The full demo might explain the situation.

I'd hope that Sera isn't going to be this game's Mhari, but I'm perfectly fine with companion deaths, desertions, and betrayals that potentially can happen at many points in the storyline.

I doubt it is either.

I personally think it is more likely that she is wounded and/or knocked unconscious. It was way too casual to be a scripted death of a party member. They would hardly kill them off-screen like that, without any drama, sad music or even acknowledgement. That is how faceless mooks are handled, not companions.

And seeing as it occurred in a cutscene with no way to influence what is happening, and the Iron Bull and Sera leaving to hold off the enemies at their own volition, I think that it is more likely a scene where one of the two party members is wounded to show how dangerous the demon is and how dire the situation has just become.

As the scene cuts off before ending we did not get to see it, but I would assume that the Inquisitor goes to her side and gets her back on her feet either after the enemies are dealt with or just before the combat initiate.

hmm maybe if your influence is very low or negative or like ME2 if you skip her personal quest ,she (and maybe others) actually gets killed ?

Could be that this is a DHMG important mission and it has him using his magic to dramatically heal whoever your injured party member is.

Strange indeed, my thoughts exactly.

There is no way that Bioware kills off one of their companions at randomly like that  depending on who you bring to a certain encounter AND reveals it in their demo.

It reminds me of the time when someone asked if this trailer was actually a spoiler of Liara's death in Mass Effect 3.

1) It's set up for a demo. They did not legitimately play through the game to get to that point in the story. Don't take the level shown to mean anything at all.

2) What you're seeing will very much make sense when you play the game.

Here's Gaider's post

Considering that the quest might be Dorian-related, it can be anyone.

I don't think she's actually dead. As said, too casual + spoiler = not likely that she's really dead. I'd say badly wounded and unconscious, but alive.

Of course, that leaves the question of where IB is...
