Avernus is probably dead, there's a sidequest in DA2 act one where the Warden/Warden Commander sends Avernus's research to the First Warden in the Anderfels. You get to read a letter where Avernus says he doesn't have long left.
As for Loghain, if he survives DA:O and Alistair is king, and you bring Aveline with you to meet him in DA2, he'll mention that Loghain still lives.
