I think what it comes down to is your gender and your orientation.  Based on my observations (internet and real life), straight women have different tastes in men than gay men do.  It seems most of those saying that they do find the DAI men to be good looking are women (or straight guys?).  I think very few gay men would say the same.

 

I don't want to generalize or stereotype, but I wouldn't go by a woman's taste in men concerning "good-looking" males in games (or in life in general).  I think the type of guys gay men want are those you might find in gay porn, and unfortunately, none of DAI casts make the cut.  I mean, do women find gay porn actors hot?  And if so, please say who so we have a better idea of your tastes.

 

What disappoints me with the men in Dragon Age in general (Origins, 2, Inquisition), is that none has a kissable face, that cute face you just want to look at and would want to kiss.  Cullen is probably the closest thing.  Then comes body type, none has a built-up muscular body.  Women don't seem to care much for those types of bodies, but men do.  I've even read that most women don't care much for the men on the covers of romance novels because they're too muscular.

 

 

I think what would be interesting to do, is to ask people to give a profile of themselves.  What gender they are, their orientation, and whether or not they find the DAI men hot, and examples of guys they do find hot.  We could try compiling the data.

I don't think that this is true at all.  Go into the Dorian, Cullen, Iron Bull, and Blackwall threads.  There are a bunch of gay guys (I might be one of them) who find all of those guys to be attractive.  I don't think it has anything to do with sexuality or gender and everything to do with personal taste.

Do men really have to be pretty to be attractive as characters? Let ladies be beautiful (and they all are in Inquisition), they are fairer gender after all. I dont see why all guys should have conventional pretty faces.

You talk like a straight porn director.  Women must be pretty but guys don't (as long as they have a big you-know-what).  Sorry, but why should only the women be good-looking (not taking into account your belief that women are the fairer sex)?

 

People should have guys they want to look at too, guys with attractive faces and bodies.  Sorry, but I don't find JRPG guys hot.  If you're belief is that good-looking guys are those feminine skinny long-haired JRPG guys, then you clearly don't know what many want in terms of men.  I can't speak for anybody else, but I'd like a good rugged, cute, buff guy.  Not weirdly shaped faced guys or unconventionally looking guys (bald, short, etc.).

@OP, I don't think we have ever had as many attractive companions as we do now, especially the guys. DA2 had zip, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, he's not really my cup of tea either (it's mostly the tragic hair.....), but I think he's relatively cute (his face as least), buff (given that all of the guys have the same body), and rugged (he has that dashing 5 o'clock shadow).  I'd check all of those boxes for him, even if I were to pass on him overall.

They looked more cute than rugged to me. Duncan was rugged. Sten is rugged. Blackwall is rugged. Ah, opinions

I find the DAI men very attractive. Dorian, Cullen, Blackwall, and Iron Bull. I am a gay man.

Not to derail, but I've thought about this as well and I'm thinking that it's probably because of Bioware's LGB friendly stance.  I know that it's one of the biggest reasons why I'm a lifelong fan.

All the male faces are weirdly proportioned.  Solas's eye are really high, Dorian's face in long and the mustache is sometimes sexy and sometimes John Waters, Iron Bull- don't know what is happening there, and Blackwall is more hair than man.  The women look much more aesthetically beautiful.  That said, I'm curious to see them in action and find out who they are, and I'm really glad Dorain is the m/m romance.

Some of the screenshots of Solas have looked odd to me and I thought the same.  His eyes don't seem to be where they should be.

Based on my observations, different people have different tastes in men (and all the other things). Trying to generalize that into groups as huge as entire gender/sexual orientation combinations is only doing disservice both to yourself and everyone affected.

It's especially pointless to try and work intraweb postings into these generalizations -- you have no reliable way of telling whether the poster is a man, woman, straight, bisexual, hetero or whatever (or maybe even a nug) so any conclusions drawn from these posts are going to be but exercise in confirmation bias.

You know... People who watch gay porn usually do it for the sake of watching porn and don't give a damn about who the actors are.

But if you are so curious, I think a lot of them (gay porn actors, oh my...) are attractive. Just like a lot of them are downright hideous. Like it matters. It has more to do with body parts than faces anyway.

Tastes differ, and porn is not a very good example of a source for character modelling inspiration.
