I think other posters evidently made this point but I'll just repeat it then -- Beauty doesn't solely apply to that of being visually appealling. It can also equate to personality and character. I found there were plenty of things that was attractting about Merrill which I didn't find about Isabela. I think what was most attracting about Isabela were her cunning wit, which is a trait I love in women. Aveline's attraction can best be summed up by her power as an authority figure with a strong sense of justice, and love for her friends and family. It's different for every person but while I'm not as optimistic about the romantic nature of BioWare games anymore, I do think there's potential for things to like about these characters, romantic or not.

Sure, but you cannot tell someone's personality just by looking at them. Until you get to know them, looks are all you have to go with, and they are a very relevant factor that shouldn't be easily dismissed because, hey, personality!

But the contrary would be judging a book by its cover which isn't exactly fair either way. Hasn't that always been the case with BioWare followers or other games? Is looks really the selling factor for whether or not you're gonna like a character? I doubt that.

As a straight male, I can say I find more men attractive in DA:I than Women.

Straight female and I say the opposite =/

Dorian and Cullen are the only males I find attractive while Cassandra, Scribe Girl and Vivi look pretty great to me. And Sera isn't ugly either (though that eyeshadow...).

No. But it is the selling factor for whether I'd date and/or have sex with someone or not. Since we were talking about beauty and attraction.

And frankly, everything else being equal, I would probably prefer a character being attractive, unless his/her looks are in some way relevant.

So visual beauty is solely a deciding factor as to whether you're gonna like a character -- Gotcha.

Not as to whether I'm going to like them. I would like (or dislike) them either way. But beauty, or rather my own idea of beauty, makes me like him/her slightly more.

But that depends on what you'd define as beauty -- Like what I said in my original post before we got to this part. It varies a bit too much from people to people, what constitutes as beauty about a person, character etc.. You don't have the privilege of anything visual when reading a book to give you an idea of whether the characters are visually handsome and or good-looking or not, just words and your imagination. Aveline's beauty could be her freckles, or the aura of authority that circles her -- It's arguable. But I think it's also a bit early to judge the characters at this level yet

I mean, we are arguing beauty, right? I think there's a difference between that and being visually good-looking. But anyway, I think this discussion is ultimately futile.

You have a different opinion than I do. Therefore you're wrong. Forum Logic is unassailable.

That's not true, we both at least agree Dorian is pretty hot. Mustache rides for everyone!

Obviously in my last post I meant physical beauty. Personality doesn't override lack of (physical) attractiveness, at least not in my case. In a book I usually imagine characters I like as personally attractive as opposed to characters I don't like. Which doesn't mean I imagine the latter as "ugly", just not my type.

My point is, I can like a character for personality alone. But he/she gets extra points if he/she has personality AND looks.

Fair enough then. But again -- What is visually handsome or good-looking to the eye is too skewered from people to people for it to lead to any form of compromise. Something I was ultimately trying to point out as well.

Hilariously enough, Dorian is not my type. Or to my tastes, for that matter. ))

I think this thread certainly proves one thing - the concept of what's attractive and what isn't is highly subjective.

I'm just not a fan of hand waving looks as unimportant. We clearly judge people based on looks all the time. And that's not always a bad thing, in and of itself. I feel there is some sort of generalized delusion that leads people to say "OF COURSE I don't care if they are attractive or not!" simply because they fear to be thought of as shallow. I'm not talking about you in particular, is just something that bugs me quite a lot. So I try to be honest.

It's not a delusion. There are some people who are attracted to personalities above anything else, and not genders or whether they have long curly hair or short. I'll note that when I say attractive, I partly use it as a term for whether I find the characters to be fun and/or likeable. I'm not bothered by the looks -- This is a video game where the characters are determined by the content of their character. I think it's ridiculous to assume there are any form of underlying contrary thoughts to that mindset.

Yes, and I include myself there. I just don't think "you know, she's so great, I just don't care whether she doesn't turn me on in the slightest!" in the same manner I don't think "you know, she's so hot, I don't care she's a terrible human being and I can't stand being with her!".

Both seem like unhealthy extremes to me.

But that's not what I was implying in any of my previous posts. I was arguing that visual appeal alone is about as much to go on whether or not you're gonna find a character likeable as it would be if they weren't. Ultimately, I find the outside looks to be superficial until you can put context on them but it seems we at least agree there.

Oh, sure. I think I didn't quite get your point. I agree that me finding a character attractive doesn't mean I'd like him/her at all. Looks are just a bonus. And by themselves, bonuses are pretty pointless.

That said, I like how the DAI companions are looking, even if I don't find them physically appealing on a personal level. I don't need characters to fit my very narrow ideals of beauty.

For some reason, Solas reminds me of Nicolas Cage. I can't really put my finger on why.
