OP maybe you should take a look at all the companions first before you say only the women are attractive, Cassandra's look has changed a lot since DA2 she looks more worn down and scared up from battle so doesn't that kind of throw her out of the 'objective beauty' category?  Someone also mentioned Vivenne having a shaved head as well going by most media standards  long hair is suppose to be beautiful on women not shaved heads but out of the other companions she would be most likely to fit into a 'beauty queen' category. AS for male companions that are 'conventionally attractive' we so far have Balckwall, Dorian, and more than likely Cullen (he's been a 'pretty boy' in the last two games chances are he'll be one in this game too unless he changed a lot like Cassandra did) Not trying to be rude just kind of feels like you cherry picked to make a point.

I think Dorian looks badass , he has one fantastic mustache no one with a mustache can be evil....right? Solas looks fine nothing wrong there. Iron Bull looks a seasoned warrior . and Blackwall... well how can you dislike that beard? now Cole i'll admit not a fan and the fact he looks like Dante from DMC but not nearly as Badass lol.

Won't mention Cullen due to my dislike of him.

I find every ladies in the Inquisition 'gorgeous'. They are unique!

Cass - Strong

Sera - Lovely

Vivi - Mystical

Scribbles - Innocent

Leliana - Enchanting

Varric is attractive for a dwarf. People will have various opinions about Blackwall, Solas and Iron Bull.

But hey! CULLEN! And DORIAN! Oh god! Breath-taking!  :o

People's tastes are very different. I've seen plenty of people complaining that the three female companions are 'ugly' because Cassandra 'looks like a man', Vivienne 'looks ridiculous' and Sera has 'ugly hair'. Meanwhile I (and clearly you, OP) think they're beautiful.

Same goes for the men - just head over to Cullen, Dorian and Solas' threads. Plenty of people (including myself) think they are attractive, but you'll have complaining about their looks too. It's a matter of taste. The other male companions have their share of admirers too.

"...although the ferous bovine and reflective elf would both benefit from an exchange in head sizes."

ROFL!  I love this!  And I've thought it (and the male legs the thickness of my future-Inquisitor's upper torso) many times even if I didn't manage to stop laughing long enough to type it or say it aloud.

Oh, and I utterly concur with the rest.  I'm sure a lot of them will "grow" on one once one gets used to the game, environment and immersion.

There was somewhere early concept with haired Solas and hot Dorian, I have no idea why Bioware drop these concept ideas, shave Solas and make Dorian so tanned.

So Solas can blind enemies with his shiny dome, and so that we can compare Dorian to Howard Stark.

eh, I am not complaining. yeah the guys are more broad in looks but for the first time it feels like female characters are branching their looks at all. It is minimal in the grand scheme of things, but part of that I hope is we only have 5 women (counting advisors) and 4 of them are human. Lets face it, usually different body types mean different races due to models.

So 4 human women and 1 elf compared to 3 human men, an elf, a dwarf, a Qunari, and Other  So yeah the men are more varied since the amount of non human men equal about the same as the human women.

As for their looks? I am the worst judge for looks about the only thing I can tell is Dorian is conventionally handsome as is Cullen although in different ways. The other men are as varied as can be.

As far as women, they are all conventionally attractive to one degree or other. Due to higher standards for woman appearance, (Sera and Cassandra have make up on, Vivienne and even Lelianna makes sense but the make up is there for us not because they probably make sure before they head off to battle they put a layer of eyeliner on) The difference with them is they do vary from the conventionally attractiveness demanded by most media. But beautiful(conventionally) absolutely.

I must say, thanks for the civil answers. It's nice that even if we don't agree on a subject, we can discuss it here. :)

Looks like I'm in the minority here - so perhaps the problem isn't as big as I thought. Of course this being the Bioware forum it's easier to find people who agree with their design choices rather than people who don't, but it's still interesting.

I especially like this discussion about Varric. He looks completely and utterly uninteresting to me... but then again, I haven't played DA2. I assume that Varric's personality must be so interesting, that he ends up becoming attractive to people who know him. If so, that's a very good accomplishment Bioware did. I'll see for myself once I get to know who Varric is.

Still, while I applaud how the female companions all look diverse enough, I still think there's a discrepancy between how they look and how the male companions look.

I'm far more interested in what they do with the characters instead of what they look like, as long as they don't go for the Ruck or Hespith look.  That would put me off.

DA:O I didn't find Zev that attractive and i know there are a lot who did, but his character was interesting.  DA2 they did that weird thing with elves so I didn't find either Merrill or Fenris that attractive, but found the characters interesting.  Aveline wasn't that attractive to me, but a lot of people seemed to find her very attractive.

It's always going to be a personal preference.    Some of my favorite actors are Bald or shaved - Jason Statham, Vin Diesel, LL Cool.  i have no problem with Solas.  Also Blackwall and Dorian pass my looking good standards.  iron Bull and Varric are not really my style but I'm pretty sure there are quite a few around here who are interested.

It all depends on what you find 'sexy'.

Like I say a lot, I think most of the females are ugly as sin. Some of the males are okay, but I don't think there's any single consensus on what's kick-asstically sexy, and what's "average".

Varric has a great personality, but he also sounds like Brian Bloom. I cannot over-emphasise how important that is. Varric could look like a diseased nug and he'd still sound hot.

That and he for real has features of a guy who was quite widely recognized as worthy of being placed on covers of romance novels worldwide. I suspect ignoring that and thinking 'it must be his personality or smth' is frequently a result of not even taking a closer look at him because "lol a dwarf".

Gargling scotch and shark's teeth is a proven method of attracting women.

Seeing as I find Viv, Cass, Sera, Dorian, Cullen and IB attractive, I don't see any issues or "sexism"

Also I find Cass to look way better then her DAII smooth pretty face.

There is such a thing as objective beauty.

As I mentioned before, just because the Penguin from the Batman comics has many fangirls, that does not mean he is an attractive character.

Penguin can be attractive to some people because of his appearance.

Pretty sure this is a troll. :)

You know, on a list of posts that raise red flags, this one has to be exceedingly low. He might not have a popular or necessarily well-informed opinion, but there's no part of the post which suggests anything but earnestness.

Lay it out for me, then. If there are fixed international standards for beauty, I'd like to know how I stack up.

You can save yourself and the other posters here a lot of time by reading Wikipedia.

Also I don't mean to sound lecturing, but to me at least, if any of the characters' personalities really appeals to me, I could care less about their looks.

Ah, the wonders of fantasy: all the things you can't do in real life.

I'm curious, are looks really that important in a video game romance?

Depends. Sometimes, picking the pretty face is doing right by your character. I wouldn't match my Warden with a dimwitted, weak, ugly old sack, no matter how kindly and well-tempered. Even if it's not morally objectionable, it still hacks into your suspension of disbelief. It's easier to take a non-human or make a character of a different sexuality than your own than it is to take an ugly LI. Usually only comes up with the whole evil-is-ugly problem, though.

Actually no, there isn't. So-called objective beauty is nothing more than a matter of social conditioning. There's a reason why it's referred to as what is considered to be conventionally attractive: it is purely a cultural construct that varies from one culture to the next, and it is not objective at all.

Actually, it's pretty consistent even into isolated South American tribes.

Not to start a war and I suspect that you already know this but disregard it to make a point, but being attractive and being beautiful are different things.

Since you used an extreme example, I ask you, is Penguin beautiful? Can he be considered beautiful?

Beauty technically can be quantified. Not the easiest thing to do because we all have different standards. But take music for example. There is consonant and dissonant music. You can make heavy metal consonant music and you can make dissonant jazz music. Which one sounds better to your ear is subjective, but if it's consonant or not is a fact.

I still want to know where these Penguin fangirls are at. I can't even find them in his Tumblr tag!

(Well, there are already a few squeeing fans of his Gotham version, but that's because Robert Lord Taylor is a cutie who looks nothing like any other version of the Penguin.)

No. And music can't be quantified either.

Are you saying Varric isn't hot? Because I have to disagree with you. That's a lump of sexy on two stubby legs.

Anyway, I'm all for equality and representation, and I very strongly dislike the oversexualisation of female characters in video games, but with the exception of Solas pretty much all the male characters in DA:I seem to be considered hot. I have seen lots of people posting about #ridingthebull, gushing about the hotness of Ser Beefcake or just drooling excessively over Dorian and Cullen. I've even seen some comments about wanting to romance Cole despite the fact that we've barely seen his face.

I haven't seen much about Solas, but I'm sure that there are plenty of people in the Solas thread who think that he's all that.

The ladies look great, but so so the gentlemen.

Unless you elaborate on the last part I don't see the point of a counter argument. Also I can't understand why since we have a word that expresses our level of euphoria when we interact at another being, "attractiveness", why do we have to make beauty the same thing. Sounds to me like rebellious attitude of the pointless kind.

Also to cover my bases I hope that I don't have to explain that I'm talking about looks. Penguin can have an esoteric beauty (I don't think he has) but I'm not talking about that.

Oh god. He looks like Derek Simmons. I'm hoping it's just the lighting.

Not that it makes him ugly or anything, but I'd rather not be constantly reminded of Resident Evil 6's existence while speaking to him.
