Or just add a preferences switch and call it a feature. It's not the romance thats the problem, is the sexual element. Hell, I'd take a "chaste," "vanilla," and "nasty" romance slider.

*And yes, the term "slider" is not lost on me.*

That's technically a toggle. Do I take a shot?

I really can't see it being that expensive. They wouldn't need to do a smokey sex scene for an a-sexual companion! I would settle for a respectful and tactful dialogue option to decline the sex: that didn't give a negative result and cancel the romance. Having a nice close up scene of the PC doing something non-sexual would be good too.

I'm happy to thrown in my support.  The asexual players should get a little representation as well in the games.  It would be a nice roleplaying choice to have.

However, I think the main issue is that it's tough to write for unless you know anyone that's openly asexual.  It reminds me of the same issue that was discussed about writing a transgender character: Without some solid feedback and time to really research, there is a good chance that they could screw it up.  Perhaps, based upon fan feedback, this could be a possibility in later DA games.  I'm sure that either having an asexual writer that they can trust for feedback, as well as talking to asexual fans, might help make such a romance happen.

Oh joy, this topic again...

OP, I fully agree with you that people who are asexual, celibate, or just not interested in the romances for whatever reason need to be acknowledged by the game somehow, yet Bioware constantly rebuffs us. I'd wager that there are far more of us than LGBT gamers, and yet Bioware is going out of their way to cater to them. I've asked for things like this many times before. And guess what responses I always got? "Forever Alone" memes, pathetic jokes about doing things with my hand, crazy cat lady slurs, and endless more personal insults. Huh, and people here wonder why the romance-obsessed people on these forums have such a bad reputation elsewhere on the internet. Frankly, I take it all with stride, because I see it as a pathetic defensive reaction from them.

I agree with this and personally I would love Bioware to scrap romances altogether.

I think this topic has shown the real sexual minority to be asexuality which some people haven't even heard of and where media rarely represents it. If Bioware really wants to cater to every sexual preference then there would be an asexual romance. Mind you, doesn't Sebastian from Dragon Age 2 count? In addiction, Origins allowed you to refer to your character as a virgin in dialogue with Alistair. So you could certainly role-play a virgin/celibate/asexual but (asides from Sebastian in DA2) its not referenced again and Sebastian is the only character thus far to be non-sexual (voluntarily in his case).

TBH if I had my way I'd scrap romances altogether as people wail on Bioware for them and I think the resources should be better used for gameplay mechanics and story choices. They also happen to give Bioware a worst reputation (especially since they have only ever done a few note-worthy romances that actually worked IMO).

There are many different sorts of asexuals, from those who like sex "as a sign of emotion", and to those who find it disgusting. Asexuals can have lovers, families and children.

So technically we already have asexual romances (and in the game). Except maybe for Isabela and Zevran LIs don't strike me as mad about this sex thing. There's a lot of room for interpretation of intimate scenes. Is anything there indicates that it's not just them expressing their affection?

While I totally support everyone doing what they like in reality, there does come a point where a game developer simply has to say, "Full stop. We can't possibly represent EVERY possible variation of love/lust/etc. We're just going to stick to representing the most commonly expressed positions".

this.

I just really wanted to jump in here and state that, no, Sebastian doesn't count.  All the flirt lines in the Second Act of DA2 are of a sexual nature. All of them. All of them. It is really hard to play an asexual Hawke like that, even if it does lead to an eventual chaste marriage (yay!). Not to mention that you must play a pro-Andrastrian Hawke. And Friendship-path Sebastian. Not a lot of wiggle room for role playing.

I don't want to hold hands and talk about my feelings.

actually that would be super cute

BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT!

I'm an immature **** who wants to see boobs. Why aren't BioWare catering to my demographic?! I demand for brothels with the option of orgies!

Now jokes aside, it would be interesting to see. But maybe next time, don't think BioWare are going to add any suggestions at this point of development anyway.

Not that I disagree with the concept but sometimes I feel like the cliche where you give a penny to a homeless man and then he brings everyone he knows to give them a penny as well. I think they could do with being able to withhold consummating a relationship but true asexual is a whole other thing and it would require research.

I honestly don't see why an asexual person wouldn't let a sexual person that they are romancing to have sex with them. Ok, you don't personally enjoy it, but does it hurt? You don't enjoy pleasing someone you love? I mean when I give someone a back rub for example, I don't directly enjoy the act, it's a bit of a chore, but I am doing it for someone because I want to make them feel good. If I didn't enjoy sex, I can't imagine why it would bother me if a person I loved had fun with my body anyway. Just curious.

It depends on the individual I find the whole idea of having sex with someone gross. And I still will even if I was in a relationship. I may sound like an ass but I don't care if it makes them feel good if it makes me super uncomfortable :P.

As for an asexual romance if bioware wanted to add one in then sure go for it. But I'm not going to flip out or be upset if they don't I mean asexuals only make about about 1% of the population (if that last time I checked a survey still counts). It would be cool if they just let your character say no to sex and continue the romance. But it really doesn't matter that much to me because I always skip the makeout/sex scene's anyway.

It's probably higher, than 1%. A lot of Asexuals won't admit it, because of the social stigma of 'something is mentally wrong with you.' ect. The problem is if you deny the smexytimes in DA2 it ends the romance, and some of the lead up dialogue in those scenes make me really uncomfortable.

Oh, wow, I just noticed this thread. Awesome.

I would like an asexual romance, what with my own orientation being asexual. I know it could be troublesome to add into the game, but man would I be happy. The thing is, asexuals are so underrepresented and unacknowledged, that it would be good to get it out there more. People question that it's even a legitimate sexual orientation, and we asexuals end up having to defend ourselves.

But it wouldn't be a tragedy to me if there isn't an asexual love interest (I'm expecting that.) As long as I can roleplay being an asexual in the game, I'll be fine. In DAO, I romanced Leliana. When she propositioned my Warden, my Warden denied her, but we were still in a relationship. Everything was all good, and I never had to do anything with her.

Now in DA2... I first romanced Anders, and it was all fine and dandy until I realized I didn't have a choice but to do the dirty if I wanted to go through with the romance. I kept loading my save trying to figure out whether there was a way I could avoid it but still get the romance, since it was totally out of character for my Hawke to do something like that (I usually roleplay as an asexual, I dislike doing otherwise.)

My reaction was pretty much like this:

Spoiler

Of all the followers, I actually found it the easiest to headcanon an asexual relationship with Anders, because Anders and Hawke are never seen without their clothes on.  They make out on the bed, then fade to black, then Anders and Hawke are still fully clothed afterward. Headcanon: make-out session followed by nap.  ^_^

We had threesome. :D but we definitely need Inquisition brothel. Build brothel for 250 agents.

Just skip the sex scenes?,that's what i did in TW anyway lol.

Too much sexual orientations, not enough companions lol.
Maybe they can add more non-companion romances like Cullen, tho i don't see them doing so in DAI so close to the release date, maybe in future DA games, also we yet don't know how non-companion romance will actually work.

But there could be asexual romance,we still don't know all the romanceable companions.

Need to remember that romance is optional,DA is not a sim/dating game, they shouldn't focus on that too much.

Not trying to be mean or something, but what's the difference between an asexual romance and a really close platonic friendship? :o

Exactly what I did, since I still ended going through with the romance. I did that again with Merril, although that scene where she has her arm around Hawke is really creepy. Anyway, I found it to be a bummer that it's even implied, since I had that freedom in DAO to simply not do it.

I never romanced Isabela... although I still liked her character a bit.

Romantic feelings.  That's it. Everything a sexual person would feel for their significant other besides the sexual desire. I mean, there are differences between your friendships and your romantic relationships besides having sex, right? (I mean, you can have sex with your friends, but that's still not what makes a romatnic relationship romantic.)

I haven't actually done Merrill's yet, but I'll have to check that out. I did Isabela's, though I definitely played a sexual (very sexual, actually) character for that.  :D

I'm just not seeing the point. Even if asexuals are comparable to the homosexuals, the numbers argument is irrelevant; there are a variety of fetishes out there enjoyed by a great number of people - BDSM, for instance - that receive no representation in the DA series. (And nor should they, because the romance content is a side dish to the slaying of monsters and the epic fantasy stories. We start down that road, we twist Dragon Age into an HBO series with the occasional dragon fight between all the knobbing.)

And in the context of an adventuring party, what separates an asexual relationship from a strong friendship? Adventuring couples are not like regular domestic couples.

I mean, you're already entrusting each other with your lives. You already work together. You're not starting a business together, unless you view an adventuring company as a quasi-corporate entity. You're not sharing a house together - DA2 is sort of an anomaly on that front, and I think that had more to do with getting Anders and Merrill out of their shitty living conditions. You won't be adopting children or even raising pets. And you're not too damn likely to grow old together, though "being digested together in a monster's belly" is a strong possibility.

Sure, you say "I love you" instead of "I like you" once in a while, but isn't that sort of thing head canon was meant for?
