They would wear clothing, at the very least. Not go to a fight stark naked with just the essentials to not shock the audience.

And fine, I can't say with 100% certainty that they are slaves. But given the association of their concept art with slavery plus the fact that they appear to be effectively chained to their helmets, I believe there is a very, very good possibility that they are slaves.

Actually from a real world historical point of view, there were actually some barbarians that went into combat buttass naked with nothing but their weapon. Though some evidence point to these fellas being drugged up beyond reason, since they were said to fight on, even after being disembowled.

And certainly there is a good chance of the Venatori soldiers being slaves. There is however only circumstancial evidence pointing towards it. They could also just be the usual faceless mooks, who chose to work for the wrong boss. Time will tell.

I believe those solders are just slaves. They do have locks on their collars and its a win win situation if they get hurt

From a pragmatical point of view if you dont have armor wearing no cloths is better as it reduces the risk of wounds becoming infected.

I dont believe slaves would be worshiping this messiah, they'd be preoccupied wanting to be free, plus you never arm your slave populace

Actually this is ancient Celtic religion(and the celts where everywhere from Britain to turkey) involved here. back then they believed that clothing lessened the connection to the earth and therefore the afterlife. A naked warrior was basically saying he didn't fear death.

Hmm, is there anyone on BSN who wants the Inquisition to support the Venatori?

I would if I'm pushed into a corner and had to choose between chaos or a world ruled by order (one run by Templars and Qunari).

That's the only case that I'd say "Screw it". I'd bring the world to it's end, as Morrigan says in the first trailer.

Of course, there wouldn't be any DA left after that. So that sucks :P

Because there's a concept art of the Venatori's sword wielding soldiers right beside a description of how Tevinter still openly practices slavery in "The World of Thedas".

Besides, they're wearing an helmet held together by a huge keyhole; implying they can't remove it if they want to; and nothing else, no armor. What free soldier would accept going to war naked?

More interestingly, the look of the Venatori is clearly based on that of partly armoured Roman gladiators, who were usually slaves.

The term Venatori itself seems to be bad Canadian Latin, the venatores were fighters who participated in staged 'hunts' (venationes) fighting wild beasts in the arena.

My hunch is that they are slaves, perhaps once some sort of gladiator-ish slave warrior, who are used to 'hunt' somebody or something. It might not even be the name of the controlling cult or faction, just a term for the (slave?) henchmen.

Oh, and the weird combination of armoured and naked / uprotected body parts? That's because Roman gladiatorial fights liked to combine fighters with very pronounced strengths and partial vulnerabilities, to make fights interesting.

But as with so much of DA:  'Ignorance leads to speculation'

To be honest they are nothing new another stupid evil mages that just plead for end of the world because hey summon army of demons seems like a good idea. We had some examples in dao we had many examples in da 2 and we had some in comics. To be honest i would like a little change and got hero antagonist instead just stupid evil mages.

I have to disagree, mages are in my honest opinion the most interesting characters in the game, I mean they can manipulate the world at their whim! That's impressive. Therefore as bad guys they're even better because they have access to great power. Where as a warrior or rogue bad guy would just hit you, lot more boring to me.

Yeah, they definitely have that Roman Gladiator look to them. Also some of them do have padlocked collars on.

I'm thinking they're slave troops.

It isn't about power (and mages don't have much in comparison to other settings). It is about personality that is "mahaha im evil" and that most mages in the setting present.Worst thing it is done seriously not just to laugh it seems that other characters in da start get mages treatment

While that image definitely looks like it could be a slave. I have to admit my first assumption from seeing that picture in WoT was that it was an image of a Tevinter slaver.

Anyway, recently in light of the latest E-3 demos and the info surrounding it, I've speculated that perhaps the plots of Venatori are a consequence of your choices? Maybe choosing either the Mages or Templars results in either the Venatori or Red Templars becoming more prominent enemies in the game and perhaps becoming the faction most associated with the minions of the big bad. As a sign that your actions can have unintended consequences, siding with the Mages allows a Tevinter Cult to flourish in southern Thedas and siding with the Templars allows the rogue group of fanatics free reign and in either case the Inquisition has to focus on stopping them late in the game. I noticed Redcliffe Castle is both covered with the green hue and saturated with the fade and also covered in Red Lyrium, meaning that it's a location that could be easily reused to be overrun with crazy mages or crazy templars.

If they weren't that powerful then they wouldn't be feared. Blood mages have the ability to control minds which is by itself insanely powerful.

Yeah, I believe those half naked swordsman are mind controlled (blood magic) or drugged (Qunari have a drug that makes a person into a mindless worker)

I would but thats because I like to play as a ruthless mage most of the time and I love Tevinter. I'm kinda hoping we get an option to side with them or recruit them for our bidding. Not sure we'll get that option though

From what we've seen so far, I imagine that the Venatori and the Red Templars are going to be used to show the dark sides of both ends of the Mage-Templar spectrum, and that we won't be able to side with them.

I wouldn't be too surprised if the Venatori are closely linked to our main villain in some way.

Those arent the motives of the Venatori so just blatantly saying they are with no information beyond the knowledge that they can summon demons, is ignorant. You dont know the motives of this cult or what their plan is at all yet you just jump to the conclusion that their plan is "Stupid Evil", your entire criticism is by definition based on your ignorance of the groups goals.

The fact that they can control demons should be a clear sign that they wont be killed by them and what information are you going on to make the leap in logic that they want to destroy the world?

To be absolutely fair, one of the Venatori mages did say "He will rise".

Now, of course, he could be speaking about the Archon or his Magister master rising in a political sense but it does present the possibility they are trying to summon some spectacularly power creature from the Fade or worse which, if true, is bound to hilariously backfire and deliver swift retribution on the spot.
