Mage-archetype classes have always been my preference in roleplaying games; Sorcerers in D&D, Adepts in Mass Effect, etc. Ever since Origins I had always wanted an all mage adventuring party, perhaps in reminiscence of classics like Baldur's Gate when companions were varied enough to do so.

After watching the latest demo and catching up on all the companion reveals I have thus decided not only will my first play-through be as a Mage (obviously) but that I will seek and retain the company of Vivienne, Solas, and Dorian at every opportunity, upon every quest, and keep their loyalty at any cost..

I presume it may present some tactical and exploration challenges, and possibly roleplaying challenges as well...but I do not care. Blades and armor are the tools of savages; I shall save Thedas with magic alone..

Yes, I too will try this party out for a bit.

I usually mix things up a bit more in the first pt so I'll try other combos.

You could call it a magical playthrough

An interesting idea, me the Dalish Necromancer, by buddies the Tevinter Magister Dorian and the Apostate Solas and my romance partner Vivienne uncovering arcane secrets. Not sure how it will work tactically against a large groups of varied foes, but hey. Magic is Might!

I can't see myself doing an all mage full game playthrough,  but if there is a quest in the fade I'll be going in mages a blazing.

Given the differnet backgrounds of the three companion mages, I don't think they will get along with eachother particularly well..

The only mage I cared to create was an elf male with deep connections to the Fade..

Oh wait. That's Solas. Nevermind.

Vanilla Human Warrior Templar, it is. :D

Yep gonna love the interactions. I'm also planning on doing the same thing as the OP.

Out of all the 3 base classes, I foresee Mage being the easiest out of the 3 to manage it, particularly due to the specializations available. Of course the only downside would be if there is chests or doors that require a picklock skill that I imagine will once again be tied to Rogue Inquisitor and Rogue companions, though I imagine that to be mostly for 'side' stuff and extra loot. Certainly going to have a go at an all-Mage play through myself

Good luck.

I think you're right - it will be interesting to see just how different the builds will end up looking.

I'm definitely trying the all-mage party either way though.  It's something I've been wanting to do since Origins (I always enjoyed having an all-biotic party in ME and thought it was a shame we couldn't have the DA equivalent).  And if we miss some loot, ah well.

Given the differnet backgrounds of the three companion mages, I don't think they will get along with eachother particularly well..

What I like about the backgrounds are just how incredibly different they are. One is a circle mage who supports the circle. The other is an apostate. The third is a tevinter mage. I mean, that's basically the  major points of views of mages. Kind of excited to see how they pan out and what their different personalities are like.

I cannot wait to use Vivienne. So classy. But something tells me she'll do something or say something ruthless and cutthroat and I'll not like her. However, that Dorian..dat stache. I reaaallly want to see him in action. Somewhere out there the devs said he was sick of the way tevinter was viewed and wants to change the corruption. My kinda guy.

As for Solas..well..he reminds me of Nosferatu. I think I'll pass.

I don't think I am the only one who imagines a high dragon fight using this particular set up as a kind of a Mage-Arishok marathon, only this time with more participants.
You only have to run faster then the slowest of your followers though.

Well, I am sorry to bring this up but there are five mages. Cole despite being a duel dagger rouge he is a mage. He has no idea how to use or control magic, but he is still a hybrid mage.

You can also roll with an all warrior party(Inquisitor, Cass, Blackwall and The Iron Bull) or an all rouge party(Inquisitor, Varric, Sera and Cole).

I want to run with an all mage party, but all those locked chests are going to drive me nuts. :(

Too bad there's no Knock spell.

Can you say catfight? You'd have Vivienne insulting Solas's lack of fashion sense or propriety, Solas getting on Dorian's case about the treatment of elves in Tevinter, and Vivienne and Dorian making passive aggressive swings at each other's ego because they're nobles, and that's what nobles do. Add in a Qunari or Dalish Inquisitor and you've got a one way ticket to mayhem, and not the fun Iron Bull kind either.

Now if you're looking for a more professional atmosphere might I direct you to the all Warrior party. You've got Cassandra the noble Seeker, determined to do what's right for Thedas. Blackwall, the honorable Grey Warden, ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of the innocent. And finally Iron Bull, who makes up for his lack of professional behavior with a whole lot of skill and enthusiasm for his chosen "profession". Your heroic and dependable Inquisitor will be right at home with this lot.

Or if you're looking for a little more fun, stabbing, and opening locked chests, look no further than the all Rogue party. Varric and Sera will provide the fun, Cole will take care of the stabbing, and your Inquisitor will be opening the locked chests, because any companion who says they can "do that for you" is lying.

I like to keep a diversity and consistency amongst my playthroughs, i played as a human fem mage in da:o and then decided to be the opposite in da:2 (male warrior) I enjoyed this alot because i loved having bethany as a sister and companion and in inquisition I feel compelled to be an elven female mage but i'm hesitant because i don't like having too many mages in my party. BUT MY problem is that i want to be a male because i wanna romance cassandra or vivienne (one of them are bound to be romanceable for the straight male inquisitors) but i also want to be an elf because i feel like being a human in the past two games means i should mix it up.

Help i need suggestions!!!

It's tempting, but I think I hate Vivienne, so I doubt I'll actually do it. Sera is my most likely LI, so she'll be along to, if nothing else, pick locks and disarm traps. But bringing Solas and Dorian along sounds quite good.

I might end up having to do it. Probably replace Solas with Cole but I'll probably end up going Mage inqui, Viviennne, Dorian and Cole.

Won't be that hard, 1 dedicated healer, 1 with all armor spells heals and AoE as well as high threat spells aka Crushing Prison, 1 support with low threat utility and buff spells and 1 damage dealer.
All sharing some traits with the others if convenient.

You'll have to do lots if kiting though.
