Vista's mainstream support ended two years ago. Windows 7's mainstream support is also ending in January next year.

Software (including games) will always support the latest operating system as a matter of course, so not much you can do other than uprade.

Wait, Win 7 support ends next January? Isn't there a problem with Win 8 not being able to support a lot of games that can be played on Win 7? That's going to land me into trouble if that's the case.

I can't believe that games are going to stop supporting windows 7.  It's still more common than windows 8, as well as more efficient and successful.  I mean, games were supporting XP for AGES and 7 is pretty close to the ubiquitousness of XP.

Why do I get the feeling they're not going to actually go through with that?

To clarify, they have extended support until 2020. Mainstream support is considered the full offering of an OS, after which software tends to be built within the latest iteration in mind.

If you are still on Windows 7, you probably have nothing to worry about for the most part as far as games go. But I suspect Windows 7 will gradually start to decline after January next year.

As for Windows 8 not running certain games, that's been fixed with the latest 8.1 update.

So we don't have to worry about games not being playable on Windows 8 if they were on Windows 7? I don't mind switching to 8(I usually leap between 2 OSes, like switching to Windows 9 than 8), I'm just afraid that doing so will render games unplayable, games that I've always been able to access on 7.

I stuck with Vista until now because it's hard to get pre-XP games (or pre-98 games) to run under 7. It's hard enough to get pre-98 games to run under Vista. I had to manually enable DirectDraw to get BG to run on Vista, for example.

I think it's worth noting that Windows 8 is amazingly efficient when it comes to gaming, my performance improved significantly when I upgraded.
