it's a bioware game, of course there is too much emphasis on romance.
no other company would go to E3 and have one of their main selling points be "more romances than any other game".

They were specifically asked by the interviewer about the romances. It was also later clarified that he meant the most romances out of any Dragon Age game.it's a bioware game, of course there is too much emphasis on romance.

In my opinion, yes.
One of the devs said at the gaymer convention that everything they do has money behind it, so I thought to myself:
"I'm pretty sure the money they use for romances can be better spent on much more quests", or other stuff.
But again, it's my opinion, I really do not care for romances.
So the problem with modern romances is that they have too little resources devoted to them.Romances used to be integrated into quests, a la Jaheira BG2. Theoretically, even Morrigan. Now all they are is just conversations and a boning cutscene.
I for one can admit , the romances are a big draw to me in Bioware games. Always have been. To me it honestly adds to the story and improves the story to have a little love in there. Saving the world is all fine and dandy but why must our Heroes be alone ?. But i'm not saying its my favorite part No it's #2 . #1 is the Story/Dialogue/Choices/Companions , all those fall closely together.

Why's it matter what other people value?
How dare people like things I don't like as much.
Do people see the combat and adventure..the main focus of the game to begin simply see it as annoying filler between your romance scenes?
Quite possibly, and that's ok in my opinion. Games are to be enjoyed by people in whatever way they see fit. I imagine that there are a number of people who solely buy BioWare games to enjoy the romance content. It wouldn't surprise me - and good for them I think.
Tis not for us to decide what people enjoy.
No I don't think so. They really don't talk about romances all that much. In defense of fans who do like to talk about romances, while I am sure some are obsessed with them or are only here because of them (I have nothing against these ppl btw) I don't think they are the majority. As a few people have already pointed out, romances are just fun to talk about.

They were asked about romances and made one comment in one interview how was that a main selling point? There was no mention of Romances at the press conference or in the trailer which is what most people are going to watch.
While having the option to romance your companions is a fine thing, I have to ask if anyone else thinks that there may be too much focus on a specific part of the game.
Would someone who doesn't want to romance for a play through suffer for not doing so? Do people see the combat and adventure..the main focus of the game to begin simply see it as annoying filler between your romance scenes?
So to reiterated. Is romance a little too focused on as appose to the larger picture of the game the adventuring the combat and such?
It's something that is specific to BioWare games (at least in the way that we do romance). Many other games have adventuring and combat. So it's hardly surprising that, of people who are keenly interested in BioWare games, the number who are keenly interested in the romances specifically is also quite high.
It's also unsurprising that there would be a great deal of talk on our forums. Where you find the keenest of keeners.
Does it get a little aggravating? Sure, from time to time. It really depends on how much of the talk you zero your attention onto--read too much of it, and you'd quickly get the impression that's all anyone cares about. That's the sort of confirmation bias which would lead one to quickly forget that a minority of our fans overall actually play any romances, and that the amount of content in the game geared solely to romances is not that high (there's far more work on every companion dedicated to their overall content, accessible by everyone who doesn't romance them).
Romances make for fun speculation, I imagine, at least until the game comes out. Then the speculation will switch to complaining--and there will be way more to complain about than just the romances.

Oooh, I'm so excited!

Hey, wait... what?

The complaints only come because there's an insanely passionate fanbase who cares about the series! >_>
Maybe?
From fans or Bioware?
Bioware has barely touched the subject, they've said a few things that have sent the fan base into a frenzy (looking at you Gaider).

Maybe?
I think that was what David was insinuating yes. Passionate fans will always find something that doesn't tickle their fancy, or doesn't meet their sometimes unreasonably high expectations in my opinion.

Lore/metaphysical speculation >>> can I get into her/his pants?

LOL
That was my exact read.
In all seriousness, I get the point, but I doubt I'll have much to complain about.. lol
I fear for my wardens just a little bit though. ![]()
Is romance a little too focused on as appose to the larger picture of the game the adventuring the combat and such?
By the fans, absolutely. By the devs, no. They don't blather on about it endlessly like the horndogs here.
But they're obviously entitled to like what they like.
Of course there is, and the people who try to make it seem the attention to romance differs from one place and not the other are just undermining the issue. Why do you think garrus & tali became romance-able in ME2? Because there was a heavy emphasis from the fanbase to make it happen, and so BioWare catered to their plead. BioWare games are affected by what the community says. To say, "the game will be meager on romance, but the forum will be heavy with discussion concerning it" is an incorrect statement. BioWare reads the forums regardless if it's their job or not. If a prevalent topic is voiced (in this case, romance), it very may well gain BioWare's attention. It'd explain the existence of the "Most romance in a BioWare(DA) game" thread.
Is there too much emphasis on Romance? Not really, just the most talked about aspect ![]()
I don't think there's too much romance. I think there is too much Killing of party members with murder knife and lame "let's be dark" plot. Romances and friendships keep things light and fun and adds history to the story while confronting the main evil force and his evil sidekicks throughout the game.
I think it started to get that way and Bioware played to the crowd which brought more people who liked it and so on and so on. I get the feeling that at some point the whole thing is going to collapse on itself by trying to please too many people with very different ideas about what is good and what is bad.
Now you have to do so many different types of romance to be inclusive and on top of that give multiple choices, it gets kind of ridiculous and becomes fan service.
But what are video games but fan service? If Bioware writes are willing to and enjoy writing romances than they will do so. Most other developers don't bother writing romances of any kind, and if they do theres often no choice involved, its just written into the story. The reason that Bioware games generate so much interest in their romances is because Bioware is one of the few that bothers with writing romances, let alone several romance options in one game.
Thanks David. Hearing it from among the Bioware Brass makes my concerns lessened if anything.
maybe. but that is not a bad thing.
the developers have said repeatedly, that romances are optional and will not affect a single!inquisitor in any way
From Bioware? No.
From this community? Hell yes.
By Bioware? No.
By some fans? Yes. The devs only have to utter the words ''romance'' and the forums flare up like they announced that the game was going to release tomorrow and come with free chocolate chip cookies. People can like what they want, but I do feel it gets a bit out of hand.
I can't think of a single moment in DAI's marketing campaign where they brought up romance, except of course for the recent "most romances" quote in that one video.
Of course us fans put alot of emphasis on it. But its not a bad thing at all, it doesn't mean we're not playing it for its more important attributes. I think it's natural we go crazy over it, because there are no other games out there that have nailed a romance system the way DA/ME have. One of the things that make Bioware special is the way they flesh out their characters so fully, to the point they can have believable romantic stories. It's the icing on the cake.
